ok, when do these grow?
what times of the year can you find them?
how do you know for a fact your eating the right kind?
do you need to clean them or do anything or can you just fry them up in butter?
i was just going to wander my parents woods and wander some state land to look for them, is an open field a waste of time?
wondering if i should look into open fields as well and wooded areas.

thanks

(ive been reading most the morning on these on this site and others but just want people opinons, from my understand as long as its hollow when you cut it in half and the cap is attached to the stem your good to go.)

hi ford man,
i'm not sure about in the thumb but south of 69 if there is'nt a dead elm or dead fruit tree around don't put too much time in looking. it's a lot different than up north down here.

Damp and rainy is the BEST time to look. Mushrooms LOVE rain!!:D Look under dead elms, ash, poplar, old appletrees, maple, ect. Good luck and don't be suprised if they are hard to find. The few that I find usually take ALOT of looking. However, I'm sure in a few years I'll remember where they were and check those spots more frequently.

so i think i have it pretty much figured out, but do you only eat the cap or do you eat the stem also? im pretty sure you eat both but just double checking.

thanks again

Have always eaten the stem if it's clean. Cut in half length wise Dip em in beaten eggs, then flour, and then fry in butter until slightly brown...no spices to over-power the awesome flavor.

I was being honest earlier. Rain is LITERALLY your best friend with morels!:) That's awesome that you found a couple though. It took me FOREVER before I found my first one.
