Yeah I know Ill ask Steve later when it gets closer to spring. Dont want him to think that I am crazy or anything. I am just trying to get some feedback from this years contest as far as the rules and stuff went before this thread is closed on the 6th. I think things went really well for rushing around at the last minute.

I am looking forward to it, I think it was a blast this year. I dont want to try and rush around about 3 weeks before the season starts to try and put the rules and teams together again. Thats all.

Hope everyone will join us again next year.

If your still here maybe you can be on our team. Probably not though, maybe you can get in with team #10 since you are rooting for them.

Ok, since you are picking on your trader - Hawk I can get you on a merriam next year. I just need to know a couple months in advance. It would be a on ranch in Trinidad Colorado. You can bring your bow. We can leave the blind in Denver and go on foot, like the Indians did.

PSE - I think you are doing a great job running this thing by the way.

On the measurement photos. A spur should be measured as a spur, not a leg and a spur together. I am not sure how to define the rules, but there are some spurs on here that would not measure nearly what they are being scored in real life. I almost think you have to show the ruler on top of the spur, not under it, and measure up to the point of the spur where it turns pink (assuming it is black) and the cartlidge of the leg begins to form around it.

Long Spurs is a perfect example of a good photo and good measuring. Great spurs at 1 1/16". A couple photos back there are some 1 1/8" spurs that........well, maybe it is just my poor eye sight. Please - not to pick anyone, but that seems to be the biggest thing where you can pick up points in a hurry. We were going to get a little creative today with Buckshot's spurs. They were a solid 7/8" but I bet we could of gotten them to 1 1/16" if we got creative.

Also showing the full beard and ruler along side of the beard.

[QUOTE]All pictures MUST have a CLEAR picture of the beard and spur lengths with a clearly legible tape measure for reference so there is no arguments over beard size. "or spur size"
/QUOTE] Spurs are measured from the tip of the spur to the point of the spur where cartlidge begins to form, not to the side of the leg.

Otherwise just say the tip to the side of the leg.

By the way, I think everyone in this gig has been awesome!

Having 2 or 3 judges and asking to have some "non-turkey" hunting judges to finalize the scores, maybe some moderators on MS, would be a good idea. Take whomever is running it completely out of judging points.

But then again, it is all for fun.

P.S.E,
You have done a great job with this "for fun" turkey contest. I have had a blast and have really enjoyed the stories and "trespassing" on other teams pages. Who knows where our travels may lead and we may hunt with someone we met here???
I'm in next year.
Thanks again,
00bucky

We're not even done with this years yet, why not save all the "next contest" talk for the summer so this forum can have something to talk about.:)

Well I guess that is a good idea. I just thought having it in this sub forum will keep all the guys that dont want a contest out of it. Since this thread will be closed on the 6th then we need to get started.:D

How about making it like a fishing tournament with a time limit for weigh ins. Say for instance, if you don't have your bird posted up within three days of harvest, you get dinged 5 points. Maybe another 5 for ever day beyond that. Specifics could vary, but you get the idea. Maybe it would discourage the sandbaggers!

That would be alright, except for the guys that hunt up north or some where that they dont have access to the internet.

Maybe we could do it where you have 7-10days to post it.

Well work on this one.

Show example (photo) of the way to measure a turkey for the contest in 2009. I think that will help.
Buy the way PSE you are doing a great job on the 2008 turkey contest. Thanks.

make the spur measurements easier...i.e. under 1" and over 1". There is alot of people measuring spurs different ways.

Also it would be cool if total beard length rounded down to the nearest 1" were the scoring system...i.e. 10 1/2" beard equals 10 points. again this would be easy to see on pictures...

Dont put a time limit on when we have to turn in our pictures...some of us, i mean the members find a heroic comeback to be quite entertaining! :D

I think the rules you have for next year are perfect. Also I'm thinking of becoming a free agent I have killed a nice tom 15 years in a row will listen to any offers larger than 2 mil a year.

Thanks Slowpoke, I appreciate it.

As far a sample pictures, I will be doing that next year. I didnt have any this year, so I will use the ones that I feel are the best and worst this year and post them (If the person that posted them doesnt mind.) This year was kind of a see how it goes year.

Scotty,

That sounds fine, except if you make things to easy and make the measurements so simple then alot of birds would score so close that it would make it to easy to tie. I also think if the scoring is a little harder to score high it makes it more interesting.

Well see about the time limit.;) The comeback is fine however I hope you dont put it in a the last minute.

Personally I would still like to see N.W.T.F. scoring.....seems like most people are weighing their birds, so I don't think it would be much of a problem. Just enter the numbers into the calculator.....

http://www.nwtf.org/all_about_turkeys/turkey_score.html

...and then post your score in one thread.

I agree that a standard needs to done for measuring spurs....I see many on here that don't look to be what they claim. :16suspect

Ack.... i think the NWTF scoring is a good idea because it would be more precies... but i always forget to weigh my bird :(.... i was in another contest and i could have cheated by saying a weight but im not a cheater but it sucked because i was in a hurry and just forgot to weigh it because i had to make it to work on time because it took forever to come in

so i think that would stink if someone forgot to weigh it so they couldnt be in the contest.... and everyone has a tape meausre... not everyone has a scale.... or somethin haha

and as far as the measuring and taking pictures.... pictures can be worth 1000 words but they can also be decieving as all heck too... its hard to hold the tape and take a picture... even if someone is helping you....

its hard but i dunno... those were just some of my observations from this season..

One contest I am involved in uses N.W.T.F. scoring, but without the weight......works out pretty good this way, too. I guess if the contest guidelines said that the birds need to be weighed, then everyone would have to weigh their bird if they want a score for it....it really doesn't complicate things at all.

When I first started gathering thoughts on having a contest and rules that is what I said we should do is a total of weight, beard and spur lenght added together. However, there were a few guys that didnt want to do it this way because there was not an common way (like a tape measure) to weight a bird. I know most people have a scale but, not everyone does.

I have a idea.

See the poll thead.
