I have been out on numerous occasions looking for the elusive morel. What types of areas are more conducive to find them. Hardwood, hilly, grassy? :help:
I do seem to find beefsteak but no morels....
thanks Ben

The hardwoods are a good place to check. My best spots are in groves of dead or dying elms. Try around elms, ash and maple trees. Also look around old apple trees orchards. This has been a really good season so far and I have been finding some in some places I never have before.

Old apple orchards are a good place to start, but elms are as finicky as old maids. The area has to be "just right".
If you have lawful access to an older rail grade, that is best.If not,go tromp around some state owned property and keep your eyes peeled! [elms and apples are best, but maples and tulip trees have a few(whites and 'yellows')] It's all for the taking if you can break the code...oops! I've said too much already!;)
Good luck! (Morel count this year 684 and counting!)

blacks you want popples, whites and greys you want ELM bark just peeling, apple, cherry, black ash. Hillsides are the best it seems for me.
