Going to the u.p. the begining of Oct. And was thinking about fishing the Straits of Mackinac for a little while on the way home Sun. I have been up there a couple of times vacationing and take the wife to the island but have never got to fish. If the weather is real rough fishing is out I only have a 16 footer. I like fishing for walleye and pan fish but am more than willing to bass, pike, or salmon fish. I have been to some boat launches around the bridge area and would like to stay close to the bridge cause I don't want to spend to much time traveling as I the bridge is already 51/2 hours from home. thanks for any info.Catchem79

I have fished, and caught a few salmon around the island. North side of Bois Blanc, as well as south of Mackinac and round island. It's pretty tough water. Not sure I'd do it in a 16' boat, unless you hit a perfect day. The straits can be brual. I had a 25' Sea Ray, and was afraid to go out many days.

Area around Drummond Island, accessable by car, is very good fishing, and I believe now is a great time to be there.

Have you thought of area inland lakes. Mullet, Burt, and Black, on the lower penninsula can be great for walleye and other species. On the north side of the bridge, I hear Brevort is good, although I have never fished there.

Hope you have a great time. This is the greatest boating area in the world. Just my opinion, but it's true.

Yeh I know what you mean about it getting rough up there. i was hoping someone would tell me the Mackinac City shoreline was the place to go. If it looks to bad I will likly go to Burt I have been there before caught a few walleye but also killed the big smallmouth. Everybody fishes walleye but they are missing some great smallmouth fishing. Hopefully the walleye will be hitting good at Little Bay De Noc if thats the case it will be dark before I cross the bridge and I'll have to head straight home. Thanks for the info thugh and I am still hoping to hear for others.
