wiscfish.org (can't post the whole site name because of my lack of posts)

Pretty good website. Personally, I've always thought that white perch are what most people call lake perch and white bass are actually silver bass...:dizzy:

Check it out:)

White perch are an invasive species and seldom grow to excede 10 inches. They look similar to white bass and often can be found together in the same school.
White bass aka silver bass are the same species and can grow to excede 3lbs.In the south they commonly reach 5lbs.
Both are edible and have good taste.

yep I take the white perch with me as well I have never had any one question them they tast like the other perch and no one knows the difference so I will keep them.

State record is 1 lb 14 oz

I looked all over and saw no where that said it was an invasive species and DNR claims it has been here since day one. Any one can confirm.

I know a euraisian ruff is invasive but it is not the same here is a pic on the dnr linc below from lake charlevoix. Tasty little guys.

Just wonder why more peopl do not keep them.

Most people try to tell me they are small silver bass and I am crazy there is no white perch but I know the truth.

Any way to get this thread moved to the warm water section as well?

There was a record wiper caught in LSC just up from the detroit river a ccouple/few years back. I remember reading about it in one of the local papers. Pretty sure it was the Macomb Daily.

Did not exist in the Great Lakes above Niagara Falls until the Welland Canal opened, they along with Lamprey used the Canal to establish themselves in the Upper Lakes. One of you gents mentioned "Lake Perch" which is a common nick name for Yellow Perch.

Not great lakes related but I remember when hybrids(wipers) were stocked in oklahoma lakes specificaly grand lake of the cherrokees. It was thought that these fish would grow half way between the white bass and the striper. These fish have now grown weights up till 30lbs.

Also from what I remember that hyrbrid caught in the detroit river was a hoax and was caught from maumee ohio if I remember correctly.

5'2" 110lbs. :D:p

The white bass do have more pronounced stripes, have only caught a few of each on sag. bay, and always threw back. Guess I might have to try them next time if they are worth eating. Never looked at their lips. Couple picks I found.

Different folks have different tastes. Trim off all fatty brown it makes them better for the pan also the medium to small ones seem to taste better.

I was once told that white perch and ocean perch were the same. Never did ask how a salt water fish made it to fresh water though.
