I am just curious if someone can help me with a scouting question I have. When looking at ground scratching's, is there a way to distinguish if the scratching was made by a turkey or if it was made by say a squirrel or deer. I know that you can look for dropping's but is there a distinct pattern anyone has noticed from turkey scratching's? Just curious! Thank's and good luck to everyone!

Hey Trout
Yes, I have patterned it, and I will make sure to be close! like 15 yards or so.
I found some logs just last wednesday that were all tore up around here. Was wondering what did that! thanks for the info

If you're scouting an area where they feed heavy, you'll find a bunch of dinner-plate sized scrapes, which will look different than deer scrapes because there may be a bunch of them in a small area and they won't be under an overhanging limb. The classic turkey scrape is V-shaped, pointing toward the direction they are walking, but my experience has been that they stand there and scrape the ground to the point that it looks like a small deer scrape. The biggest clue is that they appear to be randomly made without the overhanging limb.

A deer will make a scrape in a spot that he picks out and wants to leave his sign. This spot is well choosen. A turkey will scrape to find food and they scrape anywhere and every where there is a chance at finding food. You will know the difference! There will be a lot of scrapes all over the place. If you think you see a turkey scrape then look in the same area and you will find more.Like Dangler said they are usually shaped in a V ,but don't count on it all the time...SnS

Another tip is if you find scratchings at the base of trees, this is the sign of some Gobbler scratching. At the very least you will know that there are gobblers in the immediate area.
