The DNR stocking reports are available online, and in them I read that both lakes were stocked with bass and pike.

There was a master angler award for a pike from Newburgh Lake in 2005, so they must be growing up.

I know there are a lot of goldfish and carp in Nankin Lake to keep the pike fed. I may just have a go there with fat body baits in gold and red colors...

I decided to get the heck out of the house and go do some scouting. I visited nankin and spotted what looked to be a rather wide carp scooting off from a shallow area near shore. the water seemed really low, although i have no experience with this lake. i threw a few casts just to tame my cravings as of late. No bites but i did see something make quite a ruckus towards the middle (widest area) of the lake.

I need to appease these urges and get some fish caught this season.

I haven't fished Newburgh Lake since before the dam broke. I seen some monster pike come out of there thru the ice. I even caught some of my biggest bass on tip-ups from there. Not sure how many fish got washed out thru the dam and ended up in the Nankin Mill Pond, but there has to be some monsters in there!

I know the lake was dredged of alot of contaminated sediment about 7-8 years ago. Then the lake was restocked with everything from trout to pike.I heard the trout were caught of there pretty fast.
When I was a teen I seen some huge pike caught out of the lake and nobody ever believed me.I begged and pleaded with cousins to go down there with me and see for themselves, they couldnt believe it.
I know theres some good panfish and bass along with pike in the lake now.Last time i was there a couple of years ago looked like the lake was getting choked full of weeds again.

Below the dam used to get a HUGE run of pike just after ice out. Iced fished it as a kid. Never kept anything but it was fun and close.

I was just reading all the replies to what is in Newburg Lake. It was dredged and restocked. I talked to some people that were down there getting water samples a few years ago. I was wondering if the fish were contaminated or what. They told me that the water was just fine. It was like all the other lakes in the area. So what about the fishing? The place is full of fish. The west side of the lake is where the river channel is. The drop off is pretty quick and is around 10' deep. That is where I have found most of the larger bass. I have caught a lot of 2-3 pounders. The water get a lot deeper up by the dam. But I haven't had a lot luck up that way. So if you want to catch bass at Newburg.... put on some old tennis shoes, and get yourself a scumfrog, (the popper type works the best). I like the white with green makings. It is the easiest to see also. I have had a lot of fun out there. It is not unusual to catch 15 nice bass in one morning. They are still there, I catch and release.:D

i know Newburgh rents paddle/row boats after memorial day, but is it possible to go down with a canoe and launch out? If so, do I have to wait until its officially open?

the other question: Since Nankin lake has no boat rental or anything... can a canoe be launched into that water with out recourse?

Also, do I really need a permit or sticker to poke around these small lakes?

Ive recently restored the canoe my father made when he was in high school, and im itching to get in the water in something more than waders. Ive caught not one fish this year and that needs to change... in a hurry. If I had some steady income (thank you michigan economy and everyones friend G. dubya), I would offer to help on gas and such to get on someones boat just to fish and learn. At this point Im willing to trade labor/work for some fishing knowledge.

There is a small boat launch next to the fishing pier/bathroom area on the New. There are a lot of bass and pike in the lake. You can take electric only boats, canoe's, etc... Whatever you can carry down there...(At least that is what people I know do. They fished the lake all last year and already this year and never had an issue. The have a small row boat w/ a MinnKota)

There are some big bass in there too!!! 5lbers have been caught...

Most tactics and lures will work in given situations.

Good Luck!

the lake is overrun with little dink bluegill. When i'm bored in the winter i go and fish there. Its very rare to get a bluegll or crappie over 5 inches but there are a handfull of nice perch in there.

I was just out there the other day with a buddy. We put his canoe in at the ramp and I landed a few crappie / bluegill / lm bass. Lots of fun and really close to home.

All catch & release.

Also hit it a time or two this past winter and had a little success.
