I was wondering if anyone has any tips for catching inland lake trout? I have a buddy heading up to Canada in a couple weeks and he plans to troll on the surface for lakers over there. The lake has plenty of them and he plans to pull snap weights and planer boards along with dipsey divers for them while they are up high in the water column.
Any suggestions on lures or a better way would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for any help.

If he's gonna be up there during the first week of walleye season (ontario - 3rd sat/may), I'd advise ditching the deep water staples, & finding some 5-12fow, rocky humps/islands/outcroppings/etc..., jig & mr.twister-type grub & cast. That's all I do, I catch a lot of 'em up there every year. Longline trolling stamped spoons shallow also works well, but the jig 'n grub's my top producer by far. The lakers are shallow early in the season, and ornry!, they vacate shallows as temps reach 50F.
Tasty vittles, canadian lakers!:corkysm55
One of the best fights around, too!

And tell your buddy, don't forget to hook into some o' these splake! Best tasting fish EVER, hardest fight, pound for pound, swimming up there!

Very nice Brandon! What size/color on the jigs and twisters? That's exactly where he is headed and it does not seem like he has any idea what he's doing. I knew I'd find him some help here!
BTW you headed to Muskegon with Bob tonight? If so I'll talk to you then.

Chartruese or orange 3/8 oz jigs mostly, with large, white powerbait grubs. Mostly I'm swimming the jig, a little bottom-banging here and there, but usually a pretty horizontal presentation, and high in the water column, for covering water & all.
You guys going out in this wx? :yikes:

i caught them in Alaska throwing cleos to the shallows. 1/4 oz green/silver and blue/siver worked best

I should add that those splake hunted in packs & chased down small, usually chartruese/white, floating raps like cheetahs after gazelles. I'd hate to be a minnow around a pack of those fish, those small raps often don't last 5 seconds before they're annihalated.
