I'm from SouthEast MI and though I've heard of a lot of MI's small towns, I had never heard of Dorr.

Mike J,
Are you from the Dorr between GR and Kalamazoo, or the Dorr on the east side of the state? I'm from the one south of GR, we may be neihbors.

Hey Slugshot, do you know Dan Snapp on Bond Road? He's done some gunsmithing for me. Super guy, he is.

Mike, I used to participate in a black powder shoot at Dorr, held by the Grand Valley Cap'n Ballers. Probably the biggest club and black powder event in Michigan each year. Real nice area. Isn't that Allegan County? Isn't that where Michigan's turkey flock got reintroduced in the 1930s? I've heard some of the best hunting in the state is there. You must have a really good place up north to hunt.

I live by Mason. Flocks here are spotty, but some good hunting can be found.

I live in Davisburg, between Clarkston and Holly. I usually hunt around Farwell, Lapeer, or Alpena. I will be hunting the 234 hunt this year. It may be a tough spring.

RiNgMaStR- I gotcha on this one, how about, I'll be gone for my wifes birthday and our 30 year anniversary (they're one day apart). It's going to cost me a bundle the weekend before hand, just to keep peace! By the way I'm from North Oakland County, but play in Presque Isle County near the thriving metropolis of Hawks.

I live in Marysville, just south of Port Huron. Nice small town atmosphere but growing. Would like to live in a more rural setting. Unfortunately I work in the **** -zone that is Metropolitan Detroit.

Sorry about causing the asterisks Steve, I guess I didn't really think of that as a naughty word. It is, after all, the name of a Michigan city.

Yeah, I guess I'll pull that one out of the naughty words.

Thanks for the welcome, trout. I haven't been able to get a turkey permit for five years :(
I might try the late open season but I believe it is private land only in southern Michigan, and I don't have access to any near home. My brother lives on some acreage near Walkerville in Oceana County and I'll try to get out there. I have spotted some turkeys in the Port Huron SGA while deer hunting, but I don't usually apply for that area due to low quotas.

That is VERY generous of you trout - don't know what to say. Even if it doesn't work out you're going above and beyond just trying.

I'll check that link out RiNgMaStEr ... been meaning to look into that for all types of hunting. Thanks!

First time post but long time visitor...I'm from the west side of Lansing, just around the corner from Grand River in Grand Woods Park. I drew 4/17-23 turkey hunt in Barry County...planning to hunt one of a couple spots on HAP land which butts against state land...hitting a squirrel call, had a flock of toms shuffle past me at maybe 20 feet last fall...I'll let you know how it turns out.

Live in Montcalm county, it's nearly in the center of the mitten. Have been seeing quite a few 2 year and older birds in the last week. Luckily I drew the private land, full season permit.Just got up to leave for a little scouting.

Hi StrutnSpur, I figgered you'd find your way here eventually. I believe Dan Snapp told me he was heading down to Tennessee for turkey season this year. Birds have been scarce around here so far this spring. I've been sittin on field edges at sunup and sunrise several times in the past week, and heard very little gobbling. I've only seen 2 gobblers and one hen, all by themselves. Usually this time of year they are thick as dog hair in these areas. Not much time to worry, I leave for a week in Kentucky on the 15th.

Hi everybody, I'm from Montrose area. So I'll be hunting those urban birds starting April 17 to May 15. Scouting today produced two nice longbeards, Bad news not on property not able to hunt. Heard birds gobbling around the woods I have permission to hunt. One question how far away is the turkey if you can hear him gobble in normal conditions. Thanks I'm new to the turkey hunting game.

Hi Baydog. Gobbling can carry a long distance if conditions are right. Here's what I've been experiencing lately. I'll roost a gobbler at dusk, then go to another piece of ground before daybreak the next morning to scout. I'll hear the gobbler that I roosted the night before, and in sme cases I know that he is a mile away. This is on very quiet mornings where there are large open fields between me and the gobbler, on fairly flat ground. If there is a lot of terrain (hills, woods) between you and him, your hearing distance reduces considerably. If he is very far away, even the direction he is facing makes a big difference. If he's in the tree or on the ground, same story. Wind is another big factor, obviously.

It's a tough question to answer. If you can accurately locate a noisy bird sometime, try walking away and see how far you get before you lose him. I've done that many times as an experiment.
