:coolgleam I heard a story about ten years ago that the DNR Open Water Surveys indicated there were large amounts of smelt out in the lakes, but they were spawning in the open water. They theorized that because of all the years that people were taking home garbage cans full from Pt. Pelee and the Michigan shoreline they crashed the population of the "shore spawning" smelt. It's supposed to be similar smelt, but conditioned to spawn in different areas. I don't know if that's the case, but I recall that explanation. :fish:

I was thinking that maybe they were just spawning in deeper water and not coming so close to the shore like before because of low water levels,Plus all the stocking of Salmon/Coho and other game fish has just put a hurting to the Smelt.

Tedshunter, the picken's are pretty slim. Been up to port Huron more than a few times over the last week and a half(layed off at that point). A few here- a few there. Anything that was picked up was after midnight from what I saw. Me, I'm still running a virgin net.:nono::lol:

I went to the Algonac boardwalk to see if there were any this past Saturday from midnight - 2:00. I didn't see any but saw a gar pike swimming slowly upstream very close to the surface the whole length of the bordwalk. He wasn't interested in my jigs so I tried to net him with the smelt net. He didn't like that and moved just out of reach.
