Went out looking for morels today and all I found was false morels. Came across about 2 dozen in different locations. These are where we usually find the good morels but now I am a little confused as to why I am finding only false ones. Went to an identification web site to be sure they were false and the pictures it showed were definitely the ones I found. Are these areas no good anymore or do I need to wait a little longer for the true morels? Do false morels come up before true morels? Any help would be appreciated.

The false morel as I know it is shown below next to a black morel. We call em caps. They are always on when I am starting to get the blacks. Go back and check some more, obviously they do not mind each others company.

Same thing in Otsego county last weekend. Was on the ground at 7:00 a.m. in a consistent spot..Hundreds of false maybe 3 dozen blacks..Didn't see any stems indicating other pickers or a single false picked/broken. Went to even better "secret spot" 20 miles away..Coulda filled bushel bags with some of the largest falses I've seen in 4 hours of walking. Netted about 80 blacks...Since most of the blacks I found were pretty small, hoping i'm a touch early..If we get some 60+ degree nights this week will take friday off.
Water is there, tempatures sure aren't...
