I was hoping to get out on satuday afternoon. Winds are expected 20-25 out of the west. Where do you guy's draw the line on wind directions and wind speeds on the river??? I know west is best, but at 25 mph?:help:

You will be fine if you stay in toward the American shore.

You never know. I wanted to go out today after work. The winds were pretty strong in the afternoon, between 15 - 20 mph. I gave it a shot and about 6pm the winds died right down. But sometimes they dont or get worse. That's the beauty of Michigan...ya never know.

But hey, at least you can depend on a reliable report from the weather man

Thats the key, I watch the wind so I know where I can get out of it like against shoreline behind islands that kind of thing is what I like to do and I will be out there saturday fishing a tournament fighting the crazy wind we are supposed to get:dizzy:..If it's straight out of the west I will love it but turn it a little south then it can get tougher..Cya Slick

Depends on the direction of the wind and the motor that you are using to control the boat. Most of the time you should be able to find a spot tucked in behind some houses or a point. I use a 47 lb thrust motor on a 17 ft boat and am good up to about 15 to 18 mph winds. Over that it is not out of the question to use the big motor. When chugging, whipping, bottom bouncing handlining wind is not so much a concern. It pays to know a few different techniques. The best weather information that I have found is the hourly weather graph on the National Weather Service web site because it shows the trend of the wind either increasing or decreasing.

With great effort you can handle north, west and east winds on the SCR. Now a south wind is a tottaly different story. If it's a south breeze, I stay home.

Treeman, I do like the link you posted. If your eyes get blurry:sad: trying to read the graph? just click on it and it gives you straight forward numbers

You can uncheck the little boxes at the top to get rid of some of the things like sleet, relative humidity and such. Then resubmit and it will be easier on the eyes. When your mouse pointer in on a time on the graph, the weather for that time is shown in the bottom left corner of the screen.

I am glad I got some fishing in Thursday and Friday night so I wasn't even tempted to go out in this wind today!

I times had my little 36 lb stern mount Minnkota cranked right up yesterday. Most times I was about half throttle but with the gusts it was pretty tough to maintain verticle. Probably why I missed so many hits yesterday because I was always messing with the boat speed. Couldnt be my slow reactions on the bite :)

I also have a stern mount, but I haven't used it vertical jigging. Question...are you facing the stern upstream or downstream? I would think it would be easier to maintain boat control if you pull rather than push the boat (i.e. turn the motor completely around and motor the stern upstream to hold position). I have a splash well on the back, so I think I could do it with my stern mount.

You are exactly correct. MIne is a stern mount and I face the stern into the wind and pull the boat. This also help the guy in the front of the boat because it keeps the bow from swinging too much. It makes it easier to keep both of us vertical. From that position I can also see my dash mounted fish finder.

Sounds like a plan then. Thanks.
