My brother has a small pond that is overrun with green sunfish.
We catch them by the bucket full, some of them are very nice size, up to 11"-12". We have never kept any and cleaned them for the frying pan.

What is the consensus on MS?
good table fair or not.

Right now we be a great time since the water is cold. Sunfish have a tendency to be in the warm shallows in the summer and if the bottom is at all mucky they will taste mucky. I caught a mess of big gills once from real shallow beds back in a cove with a mucky bottom and they tasted horrible. Catch a couple before they move in and fry'em up...if they're good then go crazy my friend!!!

They will eat just fine.... soak them in ice water before you fry them.

yeah, green sunfish will eat real nicely if they are outa cold, clean water. gotta be careful though, later in the summertime they can develop a bad case of worms that are all throughout their flesh.

Fillet them instead of scaling them. Put the fish on ice for about a half hour before filleting though. Soak fillets in milk for 15 minutes, bread with a 50/50 mixture of flour and cornmeal, fry in butter. 12" green, wow.

there are 2 listings for the state record for a green sunfish. 1 is 10" the other is 9.25". Here is a link to state records. No bluegill listed for some reason.
