I was thinking of going to the SCR tonight but I don't have hand reels or chugging equipment.
Can I troll for salmon or walleye at night? Jig?
How late is Marine City DNR launch open?
Thanks
Due

Jiggin will work my young friend. Ever try whippin ?:16suspect
Would try Algonac first.;)
Flatlining body baits MIGHT work, give it a try. Still a little early for cranks I think. Spoons might work well too and jigging should be good. - Bryon

John, you have got to try whipping...its a great method for fishing at night. Give me a shout if you want to go. Can't go this weekend but will probably give it a shot next weekend.

Pull yourself along any of those docks just south of the Marine city launch about an hour and a half before dark, stay in 17-20 fow and get your in whippin city. A handful of f-11 Rapalas in only a few of the good colors( Black-silver, purpledescent, and vampire) are really hot there.

I happened to catch MOOD last night and they had a segment on Whipping.
I have some questions:
1) how far back is the first lure from the 3-way swivel?
3way------?--------lure--------?---------lure-------?--------lure.
2) how far apart are the 2nd and 3rd lures from the first?
3) how are the lures connected together on the same line?
4) once you drop your line down to the bottom......How do you keep it going back (for instance, last night, they found 80feet back to be a good spot).?
5) once you get it to the desired distance, do you stop letting line out and just keep whipping it back and forth in the same location?
BTW, I didn't get out. I had to pick my daughter up at softball and then do some honey-do's.
Thanks everybody.

John, read Slick's sticky, great info and his diagram is pretty much the way I run my set up:
http://www.michigan-sportsman.com/forum/showthread.php?t=144793
You let your line out slowly until the sinker hits bottom. I whip for about a minute, then run it 5 ft back, and repeat. Keep your spool unlocked and your thumb on the spool and its easy to let your line back. The line counter is essential because it lets you know where the fish are. So if I get a fish at 60 ft back, I run my set up right back there to try and get another.
I usually go back 100ft or so and if I get nothing I reel it in and start over.
I just started whipping last year so there are better opinions out there than mine but that is how I do it, and its served me pretty well so far.

he may be talking about his lack of whipping equip...back in the days we chugged in the morning with the chugging stick and whipping was also called chugging.

Due,
You'll need to carry different size weights. If you can't get the lures to drop back change the weight to a lighter one. Different currents and different depths require different weights I bring a variety between 3/4 oz and 4 oz, couple of each.
Good Luck!

Anybody else use two 6 footers and then a 10 footer on the Rapala?

I run about 6' between lures. In canada, due to hook regs, I only run two baits, so I'm 6' from my 3way to the first lure, and then another 6' to the last lure.
Got 2 on Tuesday night.

I do. I was playing around with different leader lengths last year and tore them up one night when I ran a longer lead for the rapala at the back of my set up. I have stuck with it ever since.

Same here, I run a 10 footer on the last line (rapala) and get most of my fish on it.

Hey Due51,
Usually I will run three plugs when whipping. The first two plugs are pp and the last plug is a #11 or #13 floating Rap.Lead length is 6',6', and anywhere between 8' and 10' for the Rapala.I tie my plugs on but a lot of guys use snaps and snapswivels. It's not a rule that you have to run three plugs. Some nights I will fish just two plugs and I will even fish a single Rap. with a 12' lead on ocassion.Ggoblue stated "back in the day" whipping was called chugging, well most of my friends in the P.H. area still call it that.

Always use a long lead for the back body bait. Don't be afraid to make bigger lead length for your sinkers..
