Slick would probably be the guy to answer that. He kills them pulling harnesses on the river. i think he said he doesnt pull harnesses till after the water hits 50 degrees. It does cover more water though. With the slow action it might locate some fish for you. Then maybe switch to jiggin to get more numbers!

We had zero today jigging and another guy had 5 using harnesses:yikes:

Normally harnesses work best after the water temps reach 50. Strange year this year though....

May have to try different things to get the fish going.

We jigged on Sunday near Algonac and didn't do well. We only got 3 suckers and lost a small salmon. It should get better though.

Harnesses can work anytime if you cant or dont like to jig in the spring, but normally jigging or handlining is the ticket in the spring but this year is diffrent for what ever reason.. The reports I have been reading on the Detroit river really got the old wheels just a turning lately, by what I have been reading is that some get limits and some fisherman don't get many.. I am thinking that it may be time to pull harnesses a little sooner then normal, the reason I say this is because it will become search and destroy mission when it comes to walleye this year and the best way to search them out would be to cover as much water as possible and pulling bouncers is the key to finding as many walleye as you can.. This could be a load of crap that I am spewing but I am just thinking by what I am reading on reports and I have only been out once this year so who amd I to talk yet but I promise I will report what ever I find that catches them..

This is just a theory I will be putting to the test on Thursday Friday and Saturday,I am also considering pulling pencil plugs and body baits along with my harnesses but at a slower speed then I normally would because of the still chilly water temp, I will let you know how I do..Cya Slick

One question-when pulling harnesses on the river-do you only troll with the current, across the current, against the current or what?

Thanks,

Jim

With the current. Just fast enough to turn the spinners slowly.

With the cold water, I wouldn't be afraid to try running against the current and wave it in there face but you won't be covering much water so you had better be on fish. :)

I am new to fishing the river. Just got a boat last summer. I have had limited success pulling harnesses. Not sure if I have a great setup doing it. Can anyone give me advice on a great setup. Maybe a diagram on how to rig it. Seems my average is always one when I go!
Maybe someone would like to hookup and show me the ropes. I have a good boat and equipment. Go by myself most of the time. Usually get out on week days cuz I work a weekend job. (Better for the traffic anyways!) Thanks for any help!

Normally I would agree that it is to early to pull harnesses but I caught a bugeye the other evening trolling a dipsey with a blue bomber while targeting coho's. Aparently that big male missed the memo about activity and water temperature. If they are hitting trolled body baits in this water temp then it stands to reason that they will hit the harnesses as well but I have not pulled any YET.

I will give it a try maybe this weekend. I'll post my report
