Does anyone know where I can purchase the large chain that is used as an anchor for river fishing? The stuff I'm talking about is real heavy, 8-10 links probably weighs 40 lbs.
I've checked with many of the local industrial supply companies and none of them carry anything that heavy.
Thanks
Frank

Yea, I fish the St. Clair system but I never anchor there. I'm looking for the anchor for great lakes tribs like the Manistee, St. Joe, etc.

Just tell them you want used chain for a boat anchor and they'll hook you up.
Last time I bought some I think I spent $35 for 70lbs.
I should actually sell a couple of mine. For some reason I seem to collect river anchors, 5 chain anchors, 2 pyramids and a Hyde anchor. 8 anchors and only one ever get's used, go figure.

Really, If you have a 45-5- lb chain or pyramid you would like to sell I am interested
Thanks

Let me get them all out and weigh them. I have a 38lb pyramid and a 70lb pyramid that I would sell. I'll have to weigh the chain though and see if any of them are in the 45-50lb range. One of them is actually bouy chain from the mouth of the Sag. river. Got it from a guy that worked at consumers. Each link is about 10" in length and I think the anchor is about 50lbs total. I'll get back with you.
The one I use right now is 70lbs and then I have 15lb sections that I add as needed.
And the Hyde piece of garbage anchor is always for sale.

I don't think FD Lake has a minimum. They sell used chain for anchors that is turned back into them from companies replacing their old chain.
When I've bought it from them, if I only needed 35lbs and they had a length that was 50lbs, I would just take the whole thing and cut it to the length and weight that I needed.
They don't always have the used chain available so it is best to call and make sure.
I would think for a 12' boat that 35lbs or so would be fine. I'd have a couple 5lb pieces that could be added though if needed in heavy water.
Again, I think it runs something like $.50/lb. An excellent deal.
Down rod, I'll let you know what I have and how much each weighs after the weekend. I have to track all my old ones down. Frankly though for $.50/lb if I were you I'd just get it from FD Lake.
Also, last time I was out to River Larry's he had a big pile of old chain that someone had dropped off for him. You might want to give him a call and see what he'd charge.

Thanks for the info Caddis. I appreciate it
You don't have to mess with those old chains for me if you don't want. I was just figuring if I'm going to buy one and you wanted to get rid of one I might as well buy it from you. .50 cents a pound is plenty cheap enough.
Thanks again
