I'm taking my son on a whitetail hunt in Kansas for his senior trip this fall. It's basically unguided except for some friends pointing us in a general direction. I'm looking for a website or 2 like this one that would make the search for information a bit more efficient but I haven't had much luck. Does anyone have any starting points that they could suggest? I've been to their Dept of wildlife site and have the map resources but I'd like to find something more in depth. Thanks
Steve

Kansas hunting is empty.
You should be in for a great hunt though: back to MSF:

There isn't much for Kansas hunting forums out there...the only one that I'm aware of is on Bowsite.com
Generally speaking, the huge bucks you see killed on the TV shows are all in southern Kansas (near Wichita). You'll have a hard time getting access to private property and there isn't much for public hunting and what there is, gets hunted pretty hard. The further north you go, you'll find easier access and more walk-in hunting land (WIHA). If you haven't checked out the WIHA program on the KDWP website, you definately need to. There is some fantastic hunting property out there enrolled in the walk-in program. I would focus on the counties that have the most acre's enrolled.
I know of a group of guys from California that had never even been to Kansas before and all they hunted was walk-in hunting and they all killed 150"+ bucks in a week of hunting.
Have fun and good luck!

Roober,
I would call the Kansas Fish and Game and talk with some one there. You might even try and call some of the regional offices for more specific info. KS has a lot of walk in public hunting land that is good stuff. Most of it is central and west, but there are some big deer out there.

Some friends and I bow hunted Kansas unguided a couple years ago in the southeast part of the state for 8 days. We came back with 2 bucks, would have been 3, but I missed mine. Most of the people in the area (Linn county) we were in are gun hunters, so you've got pretty good odds at getting permission to hunt on there property. We didn't see a lot of deer where we were at, but the bucks you do see are really nice. Look for some area where public hunting is available, that way if you can't get permission to hunt by knocking on doors, you can go hunt public land.
