I went for a walk in the woods looking for sheds. I was in some fairly thick brush when I hear a grunt (make that an oink) look over and there is a wild pig about 15 yards away. I had nothing in my hands to kill the thing with so I watched as it slowly walked about 10 yards and layed back down. Anyone know the rules for shooting one of these, I look it up last night but I'm still not exactly sure as there is no mention in the rule book.

You need to have a small game licence or deer license, but one of those must be in season.

Any valid license will do, during a valid hunting season like ground hogs this time of year, and then just plug it!!!

As others have said, as long as you have a valid license, and are not violating any other game or safety law, they want them gone.

Do you mind telling us where you were when you saw the offending swine. Some of us would be willing to go there and eradicate them with you. And dont worry, if you saw one, there was most likely 10 more not far away.:yikes:

Just as everyone else said... small game license and it would be helpful to have something in your hands.. like a gun....

I was out scouting one of the known hog hangouts and only saw a few tracks, but did see one set of tracks that were made just before the rain, and if I didn't know better I would say there was a litter of pigs with that one.... there were a bunch of little, maybe finger size prints that I couldn't make out the shape of all over the place following that one set of big prints... I do believe the population is actively growing....

Starting July 15th, me and the dogs are gonna be out.... heck with sitting and waiting... i'll let the dogs do the work, then i'll go in and finish the job....

Oh, and one other thing.... In the beginning i'm not sure how well i'll do untill I get the pack lined out and working with the start dog....
I will be running different areas, but if anyone wants to tag along just say so....
Only rules I have of my own are, you don't shoot until I give the ok, remember my dogs are out there too... and NO drinking before or during the hunt.... always safety first....

I live very close to the Maple River State Game Area. I have never seen a pig print in this area. I have heard that someone else in the area saw 2 last summer.

if you don't realise they are in the area, you may have seen tracks... there isn't alot of difference between deer and hog prints.... hog prints are bit more rounded, but depending on the ground conditions, one can look like the other...

West of 127. If you wouldn't mind PMing me details Murray, I'll add your sighting to the list of reports. Other pigs seen in your area were seen around Wilson/Jerome Rds., Ranger/Alger Rds. Also, The pig track info. listed is correct, look for a track like deer, but blunt toed, more square than rectangular in shape, and if the tracks cross a ditch, look for belly drag marks...
Also, see the thread under General hunting titled Feral Swine.
Good luck.

I plan on checking out some local state land this weekend looking for Morels and I don't want to run into a pig just holding a mesh sack. Can I carry a 357 pistol and be legal? I do have a small game license and wookchuck/porcupine season is open. I do not have a CCW permit, but my pistol will be in a holster on my side (outside of clothing).

You would be perfectly legal in the scenario you described above.
Do a search for shot placement, pigs need to be shot a little further forward than a deer to hit the boiler room.

And don't forget your pig-call.

OINK-OINK!!!

What if the pistol is registered to my father?

I know I can bring a shotgun, but I would rather not lug that thing around if I don't have to.

Ah, the internet notion of pigs as raging, armored beasts strikes again!!!

They aren't nearly as dangerous as the internet would have you believe. You'd probably be fine with just the mesh sack. The chances of you twisting your ankle in a hole and spraining it are far, far greater than being ambushed by a pig.

which I hope it is....
as these pigs need to be exterminated...
I wouldn't use a mesh sack......

I don't have an answer regarding the hand gun owned by someone else, I'd suggest contacting your local Conservation Officer and asking them, as that's who you would run into in the field. They will let you know what is appropriate.

You do not have CPL so can-NOT use your fathers pistol... Must be registered in your name.

Also a reminder that All state parks and recreation areas are closed to hunting from April 1 through September 14, except in areas designated open during the early Canada goose season and spring wild turkey season. (Thought I would add that since you are just down the road from Bass Rec area, me also...;) )

Even if he had a CPL he still cannot use ANYONES handgun. If you have a handgun with you it better be in your name or you are going to have some problems.

Might re-take them law classes...

From the MSP site in black and white.....

Q: Is it okay if I loan my pistol to a friend?

A: An individual can carry, possess, use or transport a pistol belonging to another individual, if the pistol is properly licensed and inspected under the Act, and the individual carrying, possessing, using or transporting the pistol has obtained a license to carry a pistol concealed permit from Michigan.

--------------------------------------------------------------
If for some reason do not believe MSP, here is related state law and can read it for yourself....MCL 28.422, 28.422a and 28.432 (i). Further can search here and others sites as this has been addressed...

The gun is not for protection...

You see if I am lucky enough to see a pig while mushroom hunting, the gun will help me add some much needed bacon to my mushroom and eggs.

Thanks everyone for your help. I am not hunting in a state park or rec area, so no problems there. I spoke to the DNR and I do not need a concealed weapons permit because the pistol will not be concealed. The nice lady at the DNR made that crystal clear, it can't even be covered by a sweatshirt or any clothing. The only question I have is if I can use my father's pistol, which is properly titled/registered in his name (which by the way is my name too).

I will leave nothing to chance and I'll call the local law enforcement before I go looking for morels and bacon. My hunting rights and my father's pistol are too important to me to leave anything to chance.
