View Full Version : Dumb Idea???

Okay guys...I'm gonna put myself out there for this idea, so be gentle!:hide:
I was doing some thinking about pier fishing techniques yesterday. While rolling some of the river and trolling fishing techniques (that I've learned from some of the fishing professionals I've been hanging around over the past year) around in my head, I came up with this wacky idea. I've always thought how funny it would be to hook up some trolling rods and planer boards to a bike, and hit the pier. Then I really started thinking that maybe it wasn't so funny after all!:dizzy:
Has anyone ever tried using a planer board off the pier?:tdo12::tdo12:
:hide::hide::hide:
Here's my logic:
1. I really think that fish usually swim more parallel to the pier than right at the pier. The window of opportunity you have in casting a spoon or a crankbait then would be very limited.
2. The average person walks from 3 - 3.5 miles per hour. A boat trolling planer boards has an optimal speed of 1.75 - 2.75 miles per hour. You could easily and comfortably match that speed while walking on a pier.
3. Many of the larger piers are what? About 1/4 mile long? Plenty of space to pull a planer board...as long as it is not too populated with other fishermen.
4. You would have a much bigger window of opportunity if you could get your bait 30 - 40 feet away from the pier and keep it in that specific zone while covering the length of the pier. A planer board does just that.
Okay, what do you think????:16suspect Am I nuts?

Rather than a bike maybe you could get a three wheeler trikes with an ice cream box on the back and sell ice cream when the fishing is slow...:D

I have thought about it in channels where there is a current....

I can see it now, you biking down the pier w/ a planer board and a dipsy diver set on #3:lol::lol::lol: Just had to say that before I exposed my own neck by saying that YES, I've slipped a foam board out once or twice w/ a crankbait in the JOE, but the water was low/slow. But I wasn't trolling. If I were to Troll w/ a bike, I think I'd re-install the training wheels. Or better yet for a laugh, a big tricycle. I can see it now "Artie Johnson school of trolling"

Out in Oregon that is a well seasoned way to fish. They have been using side planers in the bigger rivers for years. Usually pulling plugs. Works like a charm. They're usually just using the current to get their plugs out to more productive water.........faster the water the better it works.

:lol:Well..........um.......why not it might be worth a try but it sounds like a hastle. On the other hand, I have seen guys using planer boards in the river running crankbaits and flatfish behind them. They seem like a great idea for the river because they keep the bait in the hole you want to fish and all you have to do is set the rod in a rod holder. Also, I have had days on the pier when there is so much current that your spoon sweeps 25 yards off to the side by the time you reel it in. Could it be possible to fish right on the end of a pier WITHOUT walking and fish with a planer board just because there is so much current? This was at the Elberta Pier by the way where there was a ton of current.

Don't they have most piers posted "no bikes" ?

Yes, most don't allow bikes. He said he could still walk though which would probably work too.

The idea is a good one except for the fact that it would be almost impossible because of all the other fishermen. When the fishermen are not there, neither are the fish. I have used planer boards in the river fishing for walleye and that works well. Only thing is you don't have to move the current does all the work.

I used to walk the muskegon channel like that but you can only do it when there is a big stretch open. I myself have never caught anything but my dad has.

Should work. Current dependent. Have seen it done off the wall in PH. As well as dipsey's. Gotta remember though, that current in the St. Clair river is pretty quick. Either way it should work.

I like the idea of using them in the river....Why not? Target some fish out in the father reaches, and keep your crankbait in that target area longer. Hmmmmm......

I've done it with the lurh-jen small planners in the paw-paw river.Worked pretty good but was a pain in the a#$ to get the lure out then to work the board out without the bait snagging bottom.Kind of like flying a kite.It did work I have to say but was way to much hassel.

Just to clarify...the bike thing was a joke!:dizzy:
But walking the pier with a small planer was actually a real idea. You can walk slowly pulling the planer (probably work best with non-sinking crankbaits) along the side of the pier. You are correct, this would be totally dependant on the amount of fishermen on the pier but would not be dependant on the current at all. Your walking is what keeps the crankbait down, not the current.
Its something I may try one of these mornings when the pier is abandoned. (Just because their are no fishermen on the pier doesn't mean there are no fish...I've caught my limit a couple of times within 45 minutes of walking onto an abandoned pier)

they make inline planers for steelys inthe rivers just for this type of thing ........id stick to rivers with current and just work the lures down stream.......that big brown hen i got a couple years ago came while walken down the pier though lol....
ill get you the brand of the inlines next time im at my buddies place.......but ive used my home made inlines in a current situation it can defently work but you need empty peirs........any east side peir should work fine lol

Seems like you could walk up the beach and troll the wave troughs that way.

As cool as this sounds, i'm not to sure aboutit. You mostlikely would catch fish but it just seems to much of a hassel than just casting, but as my best friend says, "it's always worth a try!"

Ive thought about using a kite before so your idea isnt to crazy:dizzy:

Kites are used all the time in off shore salt water fishing. In most instances it is used like a planer board to keep several lines in the water. The kite line is sectioned out and each section has an alligator clip like you would use on a planer board rig.
