fasthunter's post in another thread got me thinking of looking for some more edibles here in MI. At the moment, I only really go after morels but would like to look for some other edibles (I've already got a couple spots lined up for hens and chickens this year). I'm thinking that maybe some of the more experienced shroomers on here wouldn't mind posting the edibles they look for and the approximate time of year that they start searching (as it relates to Michigan). I know a lot is going to depend on weather/moisture but a general time to be out in the woods searching would be nice.

Thanks

I'm pretty new at this myself, but from the other thread with what Michigan Mike told me the chanterelles grow from July to Mid-August. I know you can pick Hens, Chickens, puffballs, and honey-mushrooms in Sept-Oct.(I think the honey-mushrooms are more in Sept though I found some at the end of Sept last year that were rotted.) From what I read you can find the Shaggy Mane in May-June, and also around Sept. I also learned about some funky one that grows under pines that I found last year that grows in Oct as well. I'm kind of new like you and have just been doing alot of researching. I'll check this thread and maybe someone will spill more info.:D

P.S- I'm VERY far from being experienced. Just new and motivated....lol!! I did find some hens and chickens last year though. I was to late on most of the hens, but did manage to find a nice big tasty one!! I found some chickens too, but it was to late and they weren't to tender. I didn't even bother picking it.

theres a good book out called "100 edible mushrooms" by michael kuo. he lists them in order from "easiest" (if there is such a thing.....cant be too careful) to hardest. starting with the easy ones in the book, which include chickens, hens, etc. those easy ones are great tasting shrooms!! there seems to be a lull for a month or so after the morels pop....they are almost in a season of their own, i think thats why a lot of morelers dont look for other shrooms. the next biggest thing (most popular) is black trumpets and chanterelles, but they are mainly summer shrooms. also boletes but those arent newbie quarry. also oysters which are abundant at times. theres THOUSANDS of mushroom species but not very many good edibles from what i understand. a personal favorite of mine is "hericium". its an "easy" one and very tasty. but thats a fall shroom. theres a whole world of shrooms to get into if someone is inclined to put the study time in.
