They say that turkeys are so wary, but on more than one occasion I have seen flocks of them standing beside the road in broad daylight like they have not a concern in the world. Can someone shed some light on this?

Steve,

Next time try to stop and get out of your car. Then see what happens.

I'll tell ya one thing though. Last year was the first time I ever really noticed turkeys hit by cars! I saw at least 5 road-killed birds, and actually saw on get hit on M-72 when it didn't fly like the rest of the flock. (Fall afternoon)

I can't answer you question but I walked up on 30 or so of them yesterday afternoon. I got to with in 40 yards before I noticed them in the brush. I laid down on the ground and all of them walked right by me.
Walked into a flock last fall with my son and took a nice Tom during the fall hunt. They saw us but never took off. We sat down and I crawled to with in 25 yards of them. Turkeys are strange birds but I love to hunt them.

The Turkeys you see by the road are picking gravel for their Crop, just like chickens need grit. Its a shame they go to highways to scratch. This is however, one way I have been succesful at finding birds to hunt. I leave the woods in the late morning and drive the old dirt roads around my area. You dont nessesarily have to see the birds either. The tracks are somewhat easy to spot in the soft dirt on the side of the road. Then I just stop and make a few calls. If I get an answer, I make a note of the spot for later after, I check to see if the land owner will let me hunt, or if the land is public I go in aways and call again. Sometimes you get lucky and find a gobbler that hasnt been hunted much and will come right in to your call.
I'll have to try and post the photo of me with the big tom I took a couple years ago, doing just this very thing. :D
