CHEBOYGAN - This year's walleye fishing season opener will allow anglers a chance to win considerable prize money, in addition to the thrill of the catch.
The inaugural Inland Waterway Walleye Classic will take place beginning at 12:01 a.m. April 26, in conjunction with the walleye season opener. Anglers must have their fish ready at a weigh-in no later than 5 p.m. that day.
Organizer Billy Jewell said he and some friends came up with the idea as a way to raise awareness of the Inland Waterway and attract out-of-towners during a slow time of year.
Registration is open now, with official rules, regulations and registration forms available at the Cheboygan Area Chamber of Commerce. Teams that register by Tuesday will be included in an early bird drawing. Teams have until 6 p.m. on April 25 to register.
The cost to enter is $150 per team, with a maximum of three people allowed per team. This includes a fish dinner on April 25 and a T-shirt for each team member.
At least two-thirds of the registration fees will go toward the payout, Jewell explained. Prize money totals will depend on the number of anglers and sponsors.
Prizes will be awarded to anglers with the individual top 10 heaviest walleye, the heaviest five walleye combined (per team) and for the walleye caught who matches a pre-determined mystery weight.
Jewell said teams will not be forced to fish in the Inland Waterway, but are encouraged to do so. The Inland Waterway includes the Cheboygan River, Mullett Lake, Indian River, Burt Lake, Crooked River, Crooked Lake and Pickeral Lake.
Anglers do not need a boat to compete; they can fish from shore, Jewell noted.
Besides the fishing, all events will take place at the Cheboygan Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 1282 Aerie and all are open to the public.
Festivities will begin on April 25, with a fish fry slated from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The fish fry will be free for team members and the public can eat for $8 per person.
At 8 p.m., at least one person from each team must attend a mandatory meeting about the tournament. Live entertainment and a cash bar will follow.
Weigh-in will take place from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. April 26 outside of the west entrance of the Eagles Hall, and the public is invited to attend. Anglers must be there with their fish by no later than 5 p.m.
From 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., awards and prize money will be given out inside of the Eagles Hall. A dinner will also be available to anglers and the public. Live entertainment and a cash bar will follow.
For more information, contact Jewell at 420-8032 or the Chamber of Commerce at 627-7183.

Does anyone kow if this is a catch and release event, or catch and kill? I see there is a fish fry following the event, which doesn't sound good for a lot of the walleyes caught that day. Thanks in advaance. Tight Lines
