i have a 4.3 liter volvo(1998) and when i troll for salmon i have been having carbon build up on my plugs after 5-6 hours of trolling. I don't know if this is a result from low speed mixture or a need to go to a hotter plug ? So before i tinker around with it I figured i would ask some of you more experianced mechanics opinion.. thanks in advance!!!!

If has not had new wires, cap, And rotor. in a while you might want to start there.

Just bought a 22' Starcraft this spring. Sounds like I have the same problem with my 1988 4.3L(GM). had problem with water separator(no one changed it and it rusted through) rust contaminated the carb, after rebuilding, top end was fine but I foul out after a few hours trolling, have had to come in on trolling motor more than once. Have the same question about mixture and plug heat range. Hope someone can help us out.
Motor starts very easily, so I'm not sure I need cap and rotor, wires etc.

How many hours on the motor?? Carb rebuilt, water seperator changed and fuel system flushed??
That leaves Wires, cap & rotor. Or you have need of a valve job. I would start with plugs you can check compression while doing it. for about $100.00.

Heavy Duty,
I have no hour meter, so hours are unknown. I will give plugs, wires and a cap a try but it will be spring before I find out if thats it. I find if I use the boat, I don't do the upgrades I need, interior/exterior lighting for night trolling.
So I'll be puting her to bed early this year., but I'll be out as soon as the water is soft.
Thanks for the come back,

I would check compression before you put it a way, If it's the problem you'll get a head start on it. spring is a bad time to try and find some one to do a head job for you.
