That's our 6.
Like I said in the other thread, I'm gonna be hunting the 301(zz) in hillsdale county. North Adams to be more exact. This is only my 2nd year trying this turkey thing, so no guarentees from me. I use a 870 with a turkey choke and a Lynch box call. Other than that I guess I just kinda hope one stumbles in front of me. I might use a decoy this year to increase my chances and get them to come a little closer.
Well thats my story, anyone else.

so far.......
I might have a guy that is gonna join the team. If not, I don't think we'll have any trouble picking up 2 guys in the next week.

Hey guys, Ready to hang some spurs from some tree limbs? I start my season on the 21st In mason county. Im hoping to have a double flopping on the ground openig morning, with my boss's bird being one of them.
Ive been turkey hunting since I was 12 and Im addicted to it.
IF you guys get in a jam with bird problems, let me know. We need birds on the ground to win this thing.

Ahhh, to be young again! You've definitely got me beat.
I can only hope wisdom DOES come with age:lol:
I've got a little place in Red Oak and the birds are just starting to show back up from their winter flocks. If it's anything like last year, bird wise, I should be in good shape.
Get that double! You get to measure both beards towards our points. I have a feeling that the winning team will need a double in the mix.

I'll sign in too........I have area "K" second season. I'll be hunting Wexford and Osceola Counties. I've killed a couple of nice birds in the last few years, but I think I;m going to give it a try with the bow this year. If I don't have any luck for 3-4 days, I'll probably switch back to my gun. Good luck to everyone!!!!

Rolling Rock, Ive seen a few doubles in the area, heard about more than ive seen, but I agree, A double is going to be the ticket, I believe to win this thing. We just need to get solid points on our beards and spurs and hope for a little luck. Besides I have a record that I need to keep going, and a record to beat and that 10 3/4''. I think I may be able to this year though.. Stay at em guys and DO YOUR SCOUTING. Itll pay off.

Well, I can't take credit for any of it, except providing the names and telling my Sister what the theme should be. She's a graphic artist and took all of, oh, 5 minutes to throw something together.
As for the order of the names, I can't take credit for that either. When I gave her the names, she asked me which one was me, so I told her. Guess I must be first in her book, but for the life of me, I can't figure out why.
She is my LITTLE sister after all:lol:

That's what I'm planning on!
Buter, it'd be awesome if you could whack a double. Since you've seen more than one, do you think there is a genetic link to having a couple in the same area? I don't know if that's how double bearded birds come to be or if it is just a freak of a nature.

Rollin. Im not sure if It genetic or not..very well could be. I didnt see any doubles this morning, but I sure saw one that had some good length to it. That boy was strutting away and His beard kept catching on the grass as he walked. Figure if that one waddles by..Hes toast. I have a buddy that is going to video our opening morning..hopefully Ill have some film to go along with a Whacked gobbler.
I teach a turkey seminar during Hunter Safety courses and we holding on this week. To be able to explain turkey hunting to youngsters really get me fired up and Im alreay hopping with the season fast approaching. Im sure the kids could see just how ready I am. -Eric-

Been absent for a couple of days...
Now that my curiosity has been piqued, I'll have to do some checking to see what the consensus is on double beards. My thought was that it may have been a result of an injury in the area where the beard grows, causing it to split. Who knows, I may never find out.
I have to commend you for your involvement in the Hunter Safety classes. The more youngsters in all outdoor sports, the better.
As for thr logo, you should be able to right click the picture and then click on "save picture as.." and save it anywhere you'd like. If that doesn't work, you can PM your email and I can send it to you. I know I can post pics to the site, but I just haven't taken the time to figure it out yet.

Yuppers, 23 more youngsters going to be taking out to fields this fall. This class was smaller compared to our other classes.
Thanks, I did save it. That logo is awesome.
Seen couple new toms this morning that were good solid birds, going to try and get permission tomorrow.

Good for you, buter. Keep cranking out those youngsters!
Glad you were able to save the logo. It is pretty sweet and it took my sister all of 5 minutes to put together.
Good deal on the birds. My first chance at any real scouting will be next weekend, then I'm up for the entire week of May 5th.
I'll be spending a couple of days scouting with Molson near Mio. Plenty of birds in the area. Just hope they cooperate.
You do much fishing on Lake Mi? Salmon in the fall?
Buter
04-18-2008, 09:25 PM
Yeah I do some, But I do more on the mouth of the PM river. I limit out a lot of the time within a short period. I also catch a lot of fish out of the sable, here in our Ludington State Park.
Im looking pretty decent bird wise. I was a little bummed this morning as I only saw two good toms, but then I rode past my G-pa's house and he had 3 really solids toms in his field. Then later on I went Scouting for tracks along our logging road and seen one hen that was pretty talkitive and she got the toms to start talking, So I snuck out of there so I didnt bump them. Looks good guys, Ill keep you posted. I start on monday.

Sweet! One of our team members, Molson, has done quite a bit of fishing in the area over the years and showed me the ropes at Frankfort last year. It sounds like we're going to hit the mouth of the Platte this year and put a few in the cooler.
Sounds like you have several options on birds, so have an enjoyable week picking the one you want and let us know how it goes.
Can't wait to see the pics!

Well boys..First morning went like this... My boss met me at my house and we took off to work a decent tom that had roosted by himself last nite. Got in close (70yards or so from roost trees) He was gobbling his head off in the tree before I started calling to him, He would gobble 4 or 5 times in a row. Anyways he flew down and was still gobbling his head off, but yup you guessed it. That dirty dog just stayed up on this little ridge and strutted back and forth. After about 45 mins he finally faded off. We reloated on the property and after about 10 mins of calling, We had multiple toms answering each other. I thought for sure a foot race was on, but they met up before they got to us. Im not if it turned into a strutting match which led those birds away from us, but a group of jakes were just waiting for them to leave, once the big boys left the jakes came in hard, my boss decided that he wanted to take one and so he did get a nice jake. We then skipped to some other propery and set up on a really good tom and two hens. He didnt want anything to do with us. I eating lunch and Im heading back out after them in a few mins. Going to go back where I seen that nice tom and see if hes done with those hens yet. Later boys..stay at em!

Hey boys, Im back and Im tagged out. I didnt get a huge tom but I shot the mature boy. I was in some pretty thick pines so it was hard to see beards. He weighs 23 lbs has 1 1/8'' spurs and 7 1/4'' beard. Like I said, not huge campared to my last couple years birds but now I can focus on calling for my other guys as well. Can you guys walk me through how to post pictures on here.

Well boys..Took out my last guy for 1st season. Started off with lots of gobbling but nothing wanted to cross the road that I needed them to cross. Second had nothing going then my g-pa called me and told me that he had a couple toms gobble at him. Went and set up worked one tom to about 80 yds (never saw him) then he faded off. Closed the distance and started calling and called in a nice tom that ran across a field to get to us. Prolly about 200 yds he ran with a few stops along the way to show off! The guy I was calling for dumped him at about 30 yds. 8'' beard 1 1/8'' spurs. Nice tom. Stay at em.

I'll be starting on Monday and have the whole week to bag one.
Did a little scouting this past weekend, but the weather wasn't very cooperative. Not so much the cooler temps, but the wind made it all but impossible to hear much of anything.
Between wind gusts, I did hear a few gobbles, set off by a couple of noisy canadian geese, so that was promising. Heard a few more gobbles in the a.m. on Sunday and did hear one gun shot, so I'm pretty sure they're in the area.
Supposed to be pretty decent next week and I can't wait to get to the woods, as much as I'm looking forward to a few days off of work!
For those starting next Monday - good luck!

Well, as I mentioned in an earlier post, I decided to try Turkey hunting with a bow this year. I've been up every day at 5:00 AM, and have found that most of the decent gobblers are surrounded by groups of hens. My hunting partner is a veteran caller, and has killed dozens of nice birds. He even admitted, that the birds were pretty quiet this season. We did get a couple within gun range early in the week, but not close enough for me to be confident with my bow. We finally were able to pattern a flock right off of the roost after a couple of days worth of close calls. This group had three nice Toms all with 9"-11" beards. About 6:30 they flew down, and hit the ground right where we expected. The blind was set up at the end of a row of spruce trees, with about a 25 yard gap to a pond.......this created a sort of funnel with our decoys set up at the end. Ron started some soft purrs, and yelps, and the three big boys started to gobble.....but not alot. They slowly worked toward us, and I peeked out of the blind to see how far they were. They looked to be about 60 yards back, and slowly heading our way. What I didn't realize, was that one of the big Toms had quietly run ahead of the other two, and when I peeked out a second time, he was "RIGHT ON TOP OF ME" !!! I quickly drew my bow from a kneeling position, and waited for him to step in front of the shooting window. he must have heard me draw, because he froze right in his tracks! I'm now.......HOLDING.......and HOLDING.........and Holding......but he won't move. I knew if I let the bow down, he'd be gone in a flash so, I rested the bottom cam on the ground, and braced my release against my thigh just so I could hold my draw a little longer. I knew that I had to try and get the shot off soon........so I leaned over to get a view of him in the window, and just as I did, he took two steps forward. I put my single 20 yard pin on center body mass, and hit the release..........and the arrow zipped right over his back! He then ran in a big circle, and trotted off with the rest of the flock right behind him. I jumped out of the blind, and paced off three paces to where he was standing. I never imagined that I'd get a shot that close, and I just simply missed :rant::rant:. I learned a few things for the future hunts though, and had a great day in the woods with my friend Ron. Maybe next time.............................:dizzy:.

Hunted every day, wind, rain, cold, snow flurries.
The turkeys took a beating this past winter in the northeast part of the state.
Just plain hard to find.
Settled for a jake at the end of my hunt.
Not much help from me for the contest.

didn't think it would help our cause after seeing all the big birds being taken in southern Mich
kinda sounds like deer season
southern Mich is the place to be now...for big birds
however, I am not necessarily ready to trade the north woods hunt for backyard birds in woodlots and fields
