Haven't went in about 5 years. Even the guys who set commercial pens off au gres and sold to local markets don't put their pens out anymore. Just seem to dwindle to hardly any around. Maybe they'll make a comeback, but the way the lakers are getting, coming close to shore in areas they never have, the smelt are dissappearing fast. I just went and bought some at beardsley's at palmer rd., already cleaned and frozen for $3.00 per lb. With the gas prices, might as well go that way, and cast for walleye somewhere at night, or look for some browns. I would love to have some fresh smelt though, I'll keep all my gear in case of a comeback. Anyone who still gets them and would like to share a pm, that would be awesome.Would keep any info to myself. I've heard drummond island in certain places can still be great. Smelt are my favorite fish to eat. Pretty good bait too:D

We got into them pretty good about 6 years ago up by Augres. Went back the next couple of years and nothing. Just miss the good old times I suppose. Looks like crappy weather moving in for a couple days:sad:

There is lots of info on the DNR website about the changing ecology of the great lakes and the disappearance of Diporiea (freshwater shrimp) that was the base of the food chain for whitefish, smelt, etc. It is thought that the zebra and quagga mussels are out competing diporeia for algea, and consequently affecting the whole food chain. Some species are adapting, some are crashing......

No smelt at the singing bridge Friday night. We dipped for about 4 hours and never go a thing. Maybe in another couple of days.

Makes sense!! Same thing I heard about the smelt in Higgins Lake. They dont bite as agressive through the ice anymore because they are younger smelt. The more agressive mature fish just are not there anymore.
