Okay, here is my situation: I have met this wonderful girl and she is really interested in learning how to flyfish. She does not have any flyfishing equipment, but she does know how to fish. My problem is what should I start her out fishing on, I was thinking maybe panfish, also what type of rod should I buy her, and other little things to make this a generally good first experience for her so that I don't turn her away from it. I got a bunch of other questions, but I gotta head to work pretty quick here, so I will fill in later. Thanks for any help ladies!!

Well I guess a good point to start is see what she has used in the past for fishing equipment. I perfer and open bail reel with a light weight line. I like the flouresant lines myself. I also like a lighter action rod. I use that setup for everything. I fish bass, croppies, bluegills, walleys, perch, and an occ nouthern with that. Although I do admit I have a differant rod and reel that I do use for fishing on lake superior fishing onshore. Now the tackle box is a differant story. Theres abit of an assortment in there I switch up hooks, sinkers, lures, bobbers what ever depending what I'm after.

So I guess what I'm saying keep it simple and get her something that she can use for a variety of fishing. You can buy some quality rods and reels for a decent price. I'd look for a reel that comes with at least 2 spools then you can switch the test of line depending on what your fishing for. And a tackle box with basic tackle.Hope that helps a lil.

I started my wife out with my 9' diamondback 5 wt.Its a med fast action rod. Those tend to be a little easier to cast than a soft rod. also the longer rod will make it a little tougher to hangup on stuff or slap the water with the back cast. As far as casting I helped her some but the real ticket was taking her for an hours worth of lessons. $$ well spent. Your on the right track with panfish. My wife wants to catch smaller fish and have fun. She's in no hurry to deal with larger fish anytime soon.
Good luck and have fun!
