View Full Version : pestering birds
Is there a list somewhere on the DNR website that shows what birds are protected. We have a huge problem with a certain type of bird at our house and I don't know if it is legal to get rid of some of them. They swoop the kids when they are outside playing and constantly harrass anyone who is out in the yard doing anything. We live in the country and I am sure they are protecting their territory but it is just plain annoying to walk outside. I am trying to identify what the bird is but am looking for some sort of list on the DNR website. This is obviously not a game bird and I want to stay within the law (but there are litterally hundreds of them).

have you tried putting out some crow or owl decoys. Sometimes they will keep other birds away.

I believe the only thing you can kill is english sparrows, starlings and maybe cowbirds, but I could be wrong. You should put it in the law forum.

Sounds like red wing black birds. A couple years ago there were a few that had a nest down the road. Every time you went by there they dive bombed you. They are the only bird I have ever seen do this.

Opossum, porcupine, weasel, red squirrel, skunk, ground squirrel and woodchuck may be taken year-round with a valid small game hunting license.Starling, feral pigeons and English sparrows may be taken with a firearm year-round with any valid hunting license.
Good luck,

No, they are brown with long skinny legs. By pictures alone it appears to be a killdeer.

as soon as you said the word "swooping" i assumed it was a killdeer...not sure what the rules are on killing them...they nest on the ground.
Buy an owl decoy...post it up in your yard. They'll be gone in a couple days...

You are not allowed to kill killdeer.
Thanks for the responses. After reading up on kill deer it appears everything they do is for show to lure you away from their eggs. I have seen them fake the broken wing a number of times and always wondered what they were doing.
Would still like to have about half of them gone!!!!

After they nest and the young are on their own they won't harass you anymore. Why not let them be, and appreciate some backyard wildlife.
I can't see killing something just because it annoys you?
I will make sure to let them know where you live!!!!

The broken wing thing is neat to see. When working in the fields with tractor every spring you see lots of this. As soon as the young are out of the nest they'll be gone.
If they are dive bombing you, nothing says you can't swat them. Protect thy head.
