I think everyone on the team is pretty cool...especially Neal.
Gobblestoppers... Thanks, Neal! You should go into advertising with that kind of "outside the box" creativity!

Hello??? Is this thing on????
I saw a turkey yesterday driving to my customer's place in Charlotte............does that count towards our team totals?
Gobblestoppers? That HAD to have been Neal.

I really suck at calling...but IT IS ON:lol:. My best chance is to arrive 3 or 4 hours before daylight, sit motionless until dark if needed, and make sure to never touch my calls:lol:.

Did it come in to your calls? :p

That's enough out of you Lange.
Neal, I was going 75mph on I69 so, NO, the bird didn't come to my call. I was going by too fast:lol:
Day 1 report: Early morning set up put 3 gobbling toms in front of me at about 45 yards, they were moving about, through so very thick cover, so I held off waiting to them to come closer.....they never did. I think they were cautious of my decoys.
Later morning: Set up in a box blind. The neighbor who, is hunting across the field from me shoots, about 5 minutes later a tom comes into a separate field on my left and is slowly approaching my decoys, as he closes with 60 yards, his head pops up and he looks across the field and sees the other hunter looking for his bird and takes off the way he came.
Early after noon: Sitting in the same blind I heard a gobble from across the field. Shortly after I see 3 of the largest stud toms (let it go Jay) I have ever seen. Full strut, blood red heads and at least 11-12" beards...and i'm not talking spindly beards either, they were all big as round as a kielbasa. They were paying all their attention to a single hen, so I started calling her over...she slowly worked her way in my direction with the 3 toms in tow....she was going to bring them right by me until she too took exception to my decoys and turned around and headed back the way she came.
When they crossed the far hedgerow I played a hunch and made a move across the property to another field edge, where I thought they may be headed. Sure enough, no sooner did I set up, here they came down the edge. At about 50 yards they held up again, when they were intercepted by another small group of toms and hens. For the next 40 minutes or so I got to see toms fight, hens fight and chase, I was totally surrounded by birds this whole time which made it impossible to chance a shot at the toms. Eventually one of the hens made me, and started alarm putting, so the birds once again moved off in the other direction. Once it was clear I move to another spot cutting them off, which the never appeared.
Just one of those days where you're "this" close, but don't get your bird. Awesome day in the woods

Thank you, Marlin Perkins, for that wonderfully colorful story.
Where's our bird?

I got your bird....right HEEEEEEERE
The way those birds were call and decoy shy, I have the feeling that someone around there was doing some pre-season "Dueing"

My evening hunt was pretty exciting, and I learned a new lesson from the turkeys.
I had two Jennys come into my decoy only 1/2 hr after I set up. I didn't do anything for a long time, just sat real still. One of them noticed me, and I guess curiosity over came her. She slowly feed toward me, untill she was around 6 feet away, then she figured out something was not cool. She started moving away, giving a soft alarm putt, but she was in no big hurry. I think she still was not real sure about the situation. The other hen was doing the same thing. Then, all the way on the other side of a field, about 350-400 yards away, here comes what looks like a nice Tom. I decided that if I didn't shag these two suspicious girls away soon, they would take him away before he got in range. So I moved a little(actually pulling out my binoc's to look at him) and told them "git..go on..get out of here". Well they both started puttin' louder, and moving quickly towards the woods to my right. Now, at this point the Tom is still a good 300 yards from me. As soon as they started that loud alarm putt, he stopped in his tracks, turned around and ran back where he came from... from 300 YARDS AWAY, he heard them!!!! Mark that down as a learning experience for me.
About 1/2 after all that I had a bearded hen about 20 yards away. I had the safety off on her, but never pulled the trigger. I would rather take a nice Tom instead. She's very lucky it wasn't the last day of season.
Later I told my son that I wish he didn't have to work, becuse I needed him there. I didn't want to shoot her, but I wanted someone to. :D
you've grown as a person, Glenn. I mean for the first time in you life you've turned down a bearded female.....congrats man.

No fear guys my season starts Monday:lol:. Not sure what to expect. I know the birds around my little spots have been hunted a little already. They have still been roosting in my woodlots though. Hope to get in a quick hunt Monday morning and be back out in the evening. I need to get mine early in my season..hunting time will be very limited later in the month. Neal has given me some advice. All of my clothes have been washed and are scent free and he instructed me on how to make a call out of a towel paper roll and some duct tape:D. I am pretty inexpirienced at this but I am pumped up. Good luck this weekend Neal and whoever still has tags. Nice job Wyle E !!
and don't forget, by crossing the fields at pre-dawn, hopping on one foot will leave one footprint instead of two, disguising your identity from the turkeys.
Good Luck

ummm...I think that is how to make a "tabacoo" smoking device...not a turkey call.
Anyway... Thanks, and GOOD LUCK to you. With Neal and Jay being so incredibly useless, you late season hunters will have to pick up the slack. :D

WTG Glenn but I really don't think posting a picture of that bird getting sodomized is appropriate. This IS a family site.
My season starts on Monday. My EX-customer (whose last day was today) is off for the foreseeable future. I sense a few extra trips to the Jackson area to "sell steel" the next week or so.

Took my daughter to Jackson for an afternoon/evening hunt.
As we walked to our hunting spot, we scared up 4 deer. I told her to hit the ground so we don't stir up the woods too much with scampering deer.
After a few moments, I make a move to set up the blind, only to spot a turkey 100+ yards away. "HOLD IT, KELLY!" but it was too late. The turkey made an about-face and headed back into the woods.
2 hours later, we had a hen feeding 80 yards away.
She left and then I spotted a Jack about 150yds out. He never came to the decoys or the calls.
He went away and the hen stuck around and fed on picked corn until we decided to pack it up.
It was nice to get out and even better that we actually saw something. It seems everytime I take my daughter hunting or fishing, we get skunked.
(I think she's a spy for the wife and she's telling her, "Mom, dad neither hunts nor fishes. He's just out there wasting time")

Mr. Gobbles was quite surprised I skipped lunch last Thursday. As the story goes I wasn't eating pork chops with Partridgehunter at the local grease pit this year but instead grinning when he visited the blind at 3:15 p.m.
He walked in down a 2 track and bought the farm at 22 yrds. Came in silent and went straight to the deeks. He pushed the scales at 24lbs respectively, had a thick 10 incher, and inch spurs. I didn't have a camera in the field but I'll post some pics of the remains soon.
