Sorry it took me so long to sign in.
I hunt in my neighborhood in Vermontville, Eaton County. I think this will be my 10th or 11th season shooting turkeys and I've never gone skunk (knock on wood).
I have hunt 234 so I can maximize my opportunities.
I'll be guiding my Dad on Monday morning so I'll report then on the action. We have a ton of huge gobblers in our area, fairly lite pressure, and superb habitat. I live on the Thornapple river and they roost all up and down that thing. I also have alot of access to other great pieces of property.
Looking forward to contributing.
My birds over the last 8-9 years have all had 9" plus beards, range in weight from 21-26 lbs, and alot have had 1 1/8" or greater spurs.

But I have the first hunt in area ZF. April 21 to 27. I will hunt mostly public land in Allegan County, but I have a spot in Van Buren county that I will try as well. It's a small spot but there are birds there. I don't get my bird every year as it's more about getting out and spending some time hunting with my brother, but hopefully I'll get lucky this year.

QDMAMAN - sounds like you have been using Clive's method of roosting your birds in their legendary roost trees.
Sorry for the delay on responding. This is the first time my feet hit ground in two weeks.
I will be hunting Private Land - I think it is the ZZ hunt and it starts on the 21 of April and lasts for two weeks. I will be hunting on my 100 acres in Berrien County but do have some "extra" ground that I have permission on as well. Had a meeting at my cabin yesterday morning and watched a 2 year old bird strutting with a hen on the ridge above my cabin, so they are fired up already.
I have only hunted in Berrien County two times for turkeys and scored good birds both years. Traditionally in Michigan I have hunted in Charlevoix county. Here is my 2007 bird from Berrien County:
http://www.michigan-sportsman.com/photopost/data/546/turkeyswmich2007.jpg
I have killed over 30 birds. Most of them have been Merriams and Rio Grande turkeys in New Mexico, Colorado, Texas and Oklahoma.
Hunting time is going to be bit challenging this year, and my wife has asked to tag along on my hunts, so it is not going to be a normal year, but I have two weeks to get out.
Lets have fun. Maybe this year, a triple bearded wonder with 1.75" spurs weighing 30 lbs. will wander by.

Big T- you are right about that!
got us on the board today, (Go Snood Dudes!) and even better, I took my wife out on her very first hunt EVER today. What a great time we had. I will give the details on the thread that I need to post it on, but I thought I would share a photo.
http://www.michigan-sportsman.com/photopost/data/546/2008turkey-1MS.jpg
Shot my bird at 7 AM this morning (our first trip out this year) after getting him within 10 yards of us. My wife just could not get turned around quick enough to get him, (I was really bummed about it) before he spooked, and I took him at 45 yards. 23 lbs, 10" beard, both spurs 1" in length.
At 11:25 AM, called in another bird within 15 yards and she "whaaallloooppped" him with her 20 gauge. Took almost two hours for him to come into us, he gobbled that whole time and I think I only called 4 or 5 times that entire two hours. He weighed 25 lbs, sported a 9.75" beard and had 1.125" spurs.
What a great time. I was as excited for her as I was the first time I shot a bird. It was a truly special day in the woods. We were truly blessed today.
All of the habitat work I am doing Big T is paying off, not just for the deer but for the wildlife to.
Horseshoe - you could of drilled them both with your longbow!
Good luck to all of you, the skunk is out of the box.

Well, hopefully no pressure ever existed, or will exist with any of our team. I am a little worried about losing my new tractor to my wife if her habitat improvement instincts taking over. Thanks for the congrats, I will pass them on to my well deserving wife.
It is still very early in the season and this is the earliest I have ever killed a bird (well, this is probably the earliest I have ever hunted) but there is lots and lots of time left. Things are just starting to heat up and this weekend should be on fire!
I failed to mention earlier, that over 90% of the birds I have killed, occur between 10 AM and 2 PM. Around 10 AM or so the hens head to their nests and to me it is prime time. I have NEVER killed a bird off the roost.
Get out there early and enjoy first light and all that it has to offer. Take a little break around 8:30 and get back out there at 10. Its magic time. If you can get a bird to gobble and play your cards right, you can kill him because he will be very lonely.
I know that all of you know this and are very experienced hunters, but what I tell everyone that asks about turkey hunting is to, call very little and think about where you are positioning yourself a lot!
Good luck and enjoy your time out there. I honestly wish I was not filled out already, as I will miss going out this weekend.

I finally got my stepfather out this morning. My mother has been in ICU for the last 3 weeks with COPD and my dad has had a hard time tearing himself away from her side, bless his heart.
He showed up at my place at 5:30 and we were on our way to our spot by 5:45 and in place by 6:00. The spot was in a riverbottom that had a foot of water in it a week ago, large maples, ash, and blackwalnut trees with lots of great openings for flydown. I've hunted this spot several times over the years and, for whatever reason, usually competion, I have yet to kill a bird there.
Anyway, we got positioned and as the sun began to peek over the horizon I could see we were surrounded by birds with the exception of our approach. Perfect! I waited 20 minutes until the first bird started talking and then just mimicked them within 10 minutes or less a jake pitched down about 40 yds to our right (Dad was in front of me 8') and started our way, right behind him was another jake and within minutes there were 3 birds 15 yds in front of my Dad. As they moved in front of him a JUMBO longbeard pitched down from across the river 25 yds right in front of my dad (10 o'clock possition) and immediately went into full strut but behind a large white ash tree. I could see him just fine but Dad didn't have a clear shot, no biggy we'll just be patient they didn't even know we were there.
As the birds continued to pile out of the trees in front of us the longbeard continued his dance in a circle an refused to work into a clear shooting lane, Dad's gun was up, safety off, and pointed in the right direction. The bird started to move to the right and appeared to be clearing the ash tree but remained in full strut. He was a real dandy and I thought my dad would consider a mount if he killed him so I wanted to get him to stretch before the shot. As he came out from behind the tree I saw the barrel of Dad's gun move in the same direction, knows the time I thought and gave a couple sharp clucks on the rasppy hen diaphram. He came out of strut craned his neck and the 870 reported. ! Jumbo bird straight in the air 2' feet and then down, a bit confused, but nun the worse for wear.:lol:
We'll try again tomorrow.:)

After I stopped being depressed reading about your mother (sorry to hear that) I read the story and thought, see, now what my dad would say (father-in-law knows better) is that he missed because I made him carry that heavy 12 gauge out there and if I would of let him shoot his 20 gauge he would of killed that bird!
What a great story. I could envision the river bottom. Littered with leaves and very little green growth. Roots and stumps of the trees exposed. The jakes running around like little kids and the tom representing something that would remind you of Ali right before one of his fights.
Congratulations though - sounds like you had a perfect morning. The problem is that ole Jumbo had one too.
He might be a little smarter off the roost next time so you might need to hunt him a little later in the day. Sorry if my "I NEVER kill one off the roost" story jinxed you Tony.

Koz,
It was just like you discribed it, very little green, in fact Jumbo landed in what little green up there was...go figure. He and his girls were back on schedule this morning and made their way out to the field we crossed to get to them yesterday. We went to great lengths not to spook them after the miss so I'm confident we'll get another chance.
Thanks for the kind words concerning my Mom, she loves Trillium so I dug a bunch out of my woods and put them in a pot and took them to her yesterday, she was tickled to have them. I found out this a.m. that my 93 yr. old grandmother fell in the night and shattered her hip.

Ok, Tony you are touching our hearts. I thought we were supposed to be out killin stuff. By the way, my wife read the thread here and the one on the habitat forum last night. She said, that this whole turkey thing, and all of the congratulations and so on is like the woman's version of having a baby.
So, I think we have two hunters, Horseshoe (last spoke to him at 11 AM this morning and he was into some birds) and bucktread who are going to be out this weekend. Hope to find some great looking "baby" photos here sometime in the next 48 hours.
Icing on the cake would be some "Jumbo baby" pictures. Not overly favorable weather conditions this weekend, but turkey's don't live in holes.

How is Big T doing???? That is a loaded question. We are all crying over here for him.
His mom is in the hospital in the intensive care unit, his grandmother fell earlier this week and is in rough shape, and his father is having a hard time both pulling away from her side and hitting turkeys at less than 30 yards with his 12 gauge. The guy is digging up wildflowers while hunting, and delivering them to his mother at the ICU.
As for the rest of the team, I can tell you that right now, I am sitting here with my daughter waiting to hear back from my wife who took my 3 year old to the emergency room because she caught him drinking Drano about an hour ago. (pretty confident he is going to be fine by the way, just have a little "gas")
Of course we are going to win this thing. We are going to win it for Tony's mom. We are going to win it for my son.
So far, only three of us have been hunting. As you will read shortly, two of us are on the board and we have not heard back from the third. My guess is that he had a successful weekend as well.
Granted, we have yet to take a wall hanger, but someone on this team is going to stumble into one, walking through the trilliums.

With help from Kozbow this morning, I tagged a nice big jake. Textbook hunt with hens flying down from the roost into the field, followed by this guy. Had to reach out there pretty good and touch him, but must have had the golden BB that did him in. This guy weighed in at 19 lbs 12 ozs, which I was pretty amazed at. I think we both thought he was a two year old bird until we got our hands on him. Great hunt nonetheless. I appreciate the help I got from Kozbow. It is very helpful having someone along that can hear birds over 100 yards away, which apparently I can't!

Jeff - that was a helluva shot! Next time you might want to bring a couple of extra shells in your pocket just in case.
Great hunt this morning. I am so happy I was able to get back out. I wish I could of been a little better on the video camera, but I guess we have the jist of it.
As far as not hearing the birds, well, I guess I was surprised because that is like the blind leading the blind. My guess is that as bad as it is getting, it was hurting you all week. When I hunt with Dan and Dayna they can hear things I cannot hear, and is seems to be getting worse for you.
I am sure you can (we can) find some aids that work a little better and can also help determine the direction of the sound as well. I'll start doing some poking around.
Congratulations on the monster jake! That is a huge jake.
So, two guys reporting out, so far we have 65 points. We have some ground to make up.
Hopefully Bucktread had some luck. We could us a couple of 45 to 55 type scores.

First off Koz I'm glad your boy is OK that must have been scary!!! Also thanks for telling Kim I should get my first bird before she starts hunting. She said you told her that you don't have to be super quiet while turkey hunting. You know Kim she is aways talking about something. The woods is/was the only place I have/had to get away now I thing she may be interested in giving it a try. THANKS AGAIN!!!!! I'm just B.S.ing I think it would be cool if she got into hunting. Then she will learn(like your wife) why it is we love it so much. Horseshoe what happened to the long bow??? Is you offer to help me get my bird still good if I need it??

Buckshot - I know what you are saying, but who knows, she might bring you some good luck out there in the woods. Mine did! But you are right about the only sacred place left to be on your own. And, quit talking about the dead weight thing. That is ridiculous, you are going to kill a bruiser!
Tom - First off - GREAT BIRD! Wow, that is a beauty. We need those 50 points so lets get him posted so no questions arise from management!
I do not know if it would help, but if so please E-mail me the pictures in the original format to my home at dblackkozminski@yahoo.com
and between Horsheshoe and I we could resize them and repost them for you and also show them in a larger format. I will store them on photo bucket.com and pull them in and send you the link.
However, you have to get a picture of that other spur, so you might want to retake the ones of the spurs with a digital camera up close and post them again. Hopefully you saved the legs. It is tough to see the measurement. Next year we need to hire a team photographer to travel around and measure the birds and take pictures of them for us.
http://www.michigan-sportsman.com/photopost/data/546/2008Turkey006.jpg
BIG T - Like Tom did, shoot the bird with the largest spurs first, that is what counts in this tourney. It is more like "spur" hunting than it is "long beard" hunting.

Smoke - I cannot wait until Monday morning, we will be rooting for you and ole Buckshot. I know what you mean about reinvigorating your turkey hunting. Team Just Passin through, have their own controversy to deal with, hopefully Bucktread will take care of his spur pictures.
Tony - nice chat yesterday. Don't forget to bring your spotting scope and check out those spurs first on Monday morning.

First, off there is not any contorversy, it was a little misunderstanding, and that was resolved. So you will still have to worry about us catching you. Even if you subtract the 5 point "controversy" you are only leading by 10, so we are still not out of the picture.:D
Second, I hope that was not supposed to be a dig on the points for the beards vs the points for the spurs. Because that is what it sounds like.

Not a problem, I just thought it sounded like a slam. Everything is cool, was just wondering what he meant by that. Was not trying to sound like a di(k, sorry if I did. I have just worked pretty hard on this and had very little suggestions when I asked for them, so I dont think anyone should have any issues with the scoring or anything.

Sorry, I meant really, really big spurs and at least two long beards! Come on, the way you have them lined up there, you should be able to find one of those!
I have just worked pretty hard on this and had very little suggestions when I asked for them, so I dont think anyone should have any issues with the scoring or anything.
Jeremy - you are doing a wonderful job. Don't sweat it man! You are not going to please everyone. Trust me, I know all about that. You are working too hard, and just let the chips fall where they may. Also realize that (posts like E-mail) are a lowsy way to communicate and can be easily taken wrong. I sure hope you did not get any of that feeling from me!
The last thing you will get from any of us on our team is any debate or debacle. No issue on the scoring, the plan, the way things are going, nothing - trust me - nothing. As I told you, I would not want to be in your shoes, but would be willing to help in the future to show that I appreciate what you are doing.
You have too many hours on this thread. It is probably time to take a well needed break. In the meantime, you guys better fill up that roster. Tom Foolery has taken over the lead (I believe).
By the way, don't forget, this is all for fun and don't let anyone ruin it.;)
Let Kelly, or whoever that is, that is the final judge (hopefully not emotionally attached to this tourney or any of us fools) be the one who makes the judgement decisions and take ALL of that away from you so you can enjoy as well.
Good luck filling out that roster.
So what you got for me Koz bow? Im waiting:evil:
Ok Casscity - hmmmm....let see. I had to back out of your team thread, because things were getting a little worked up over there.
I am hearing stories about you shooting deer out of your campus dorm window, but I have not really gotten any evidence yet. Or, maybe it was something about some turkeys on that campus, still need to sort some of that out.
If you are planning on shooting any turkeys on that campus, just make sure the photo does not show the cafeteria in the background.
Oh, and by the way, when we win, we are planning on hosting a riot in the streets of Lansing.

Looking forward to a revisit, - waiting until Monday so I can post the photo of Big T's bird on that thread though.
Thinking he is going to bring home something in the 80 to 90 point range. It may not be Monday though, as he first has to take the entire county out hunting on his place, then dig up some more trilliums for his mom. We are "low team on the totem" so to speak for Big T, and rightfully so. I bet he would take Cass out for you guys if it is needed to get that 6th bird.
I was getting on a roll over there on your thread, but felt like I needed to leave. Been singing "don't let the sun, come down on me" all day, in between tunes from the Village People.

LOL now that story will never leave me...Ill have to thank Big T for that:rant:...No deer were shot out of my apartment window(on edge of campus)...haven't seen any turkeys yet around here. I have a thread back in the deer forum with the pics of my visitors....but ya anyways
Im sure Big T would help a poor kid like me out...he's just a good guy and glad that I met him..
Now far as you throwing a riot, where are you from? Whats your qualifications? We just don't let anyone throw riots..But I do have the furniture I could lend and sure I could find some people.
Ok well I was want to wish you guys the best of luck and say thank you for visiting out thread and your always welcome to stop back by. Have a good day and I wish your team all the best:smile-mad

Aren't you guys supposed to be studying for some finals or something, or out scouting your birds for next week? Or better yet, learning how to spell!
I can see what all that college spending is doing for you.
It would seem to me that if I were you, I would be doing something productive with myself.

My finals are all done:D...We've been scouting hard. Was back out this morning looking for birds. Even skipped studying for my last final to scout these birds out. Spelling? Whats wrong with our spelling? Just because we don't capitalize words and use ' and such doesn't mean the end of the world..
College is very productive and believe it or not I got all A's in my English and writing classes...I just don't use spell check on here and type to fast to pay any attention. Well I hope this writing was a little better for you.
Oh and what should I be doing? I've scouted, exams are done and I don't start work till Tuesday..So its all free time and nothing to do..College life is so boring and free..
Well I'm off to dinner so good luck guys.

Well - CONGRATULATIONS Hawk on the graduation! Big step in your life and one of the hardest ones to get behind you. You have a whole new life ahead of you. Cass you did not say if you were graduating, so I assume you still are back in the fall. If you are done, congrats to you as well.
You are both hunters, so just like in hunting, use your instincts in life and continue to sharpen the saw by learning constantly. A's will get you recognized in your job searches, but street smarts will help you more in your success than anything you ever learned in a book or in lecture.
Rest and you will become obsolete. If you get into a leadership role, you will use your psychology classes more than any other tool you gained at college.
Enjoy your boring and free lifestyles. Oh how I wish I had that again. Between work, and more work, community service, and two young children, there is little time to do the things that I think are important, like managing my land for wildlife.
You guys better get busy on those birds. 00bucky is going to be on fire later on next week, as is Smoke73. Both are hunting in a county with some of the largest toms in the state! Big T will come through for us in a big way, (confidence is his middle name) so by the end of next weekend, our roster will be full, and the points will be high.
Break out the tear gas, we are coming to Lansing to show what it means to win a tournament, the Spartan way!
By the way, I failed to mention, for good reason, that my wife is a masters degreed Spartan as well, if you are looking for a bird to beat, it should be hers since it is least a 50 pointer! Had she shot the first one instead of me as planned, it would be on our score sheet.;)

I'll hunt hard Monday morning and then probably not again until next week some time. There were a half dozen gobblers workin it pretty hard behind the house this morning while I enjoyed a cup o joe on the porch...I love my life!
Mom and Gma are both in rehab facilities and doing well so I can relax a bit.

Tony - you got nothing but time.....The later in the season you shoot the bird, the longer his spurs will be and the longer his beard(s) will grow.
No sweat! Just take it down to the wire, and put that "atey pointer" on the board.
The beauty will come in the fact that the very biggest bird taken will be the last bird taken, and therefore it will be the last bird registered in the thread. When Will Primos, Michael Waddell, Harold and Tony, Cuz and the gang, and Clive log on to check out the score, they will go to the second to last post, and see your bird for Team Snood Dudes, and then the very last post will be representation from Team #1, gracefully announcing us the winners!
Your son will be as proud of you as you (we) are of him for serving us in Iraq!
00bucky (sorry, I love that name) I am learning to cross more than just my fingers!:)
I know that you are going to whack a monster for the Snoods, at first light on Friday morning! I cannot wait to hear the story. Please stop by the office and I will bring my camera. We can do some amazing angle shots! (just kidding Jeremy!) If Horsehoe cannot tag along on Friday, we might need to hook up and get on them together. Always up for a morning in the woods.

Gotta love it when a plan comes together. Four down and two to go. Hopefully we'll get 00Bucky on a bird Friday morning or over the weekend. I've got a hunch they're running all over his property just waiting for someone to come break up their little party. I made it out last evening. Set up on a tom and three hens. I was between them and there roosting area. Well... I had a hen roost 80 yards behind me at 8 PM. Never seen her till she was flying up. Stuck it out till 8:35... When I got out of my blind, I seen another hen. She was about 100 yards behind me. I then heard a tom, but couldn't see him. Made my way back to my vehicle, only to see another bird running by my car.
I'm heading out again tonight. I'm going to try to sit back 150 yards and face the other direction.

Horseshoe and I went out to find the birds last night. We got to mom's about 6 or so. We got camo'ed up grabbed a gun and off we went. We where headed to where we thought the roosting trees might be. On the way we found three toed tracks in the mud on the mule trail(Kawasaki that is) and tons of deer track. Right a way I was thinking this is going to be good.Half way out to the wood line shoe give a few clucks and soft yelps...no reply. We checked several big oak trees that looked to be a great place to roost. We did not find one pinch of poop and not a feather one.Shoe gave a few more soft yelps...no answer. Then I was felling discouraged that was the area I saw all the birds in during deer season. So we headed to the cut corn fields to look for more sign. First field no sign but Horseshoe pointed out a few good looking roosting trees on the other side if the field so he glassed the field no birds gave a few soft yelps...no reply. So we headed to the next cut corn field. they are separated by a small wood line with an opening big enough to get the tractor threw. Found a few old tracks maybe big enough to he a tom maybe distorted by rain??? The shoe man said that this field looked good for a set up on Friday morning so I was feeling a little better. I could see the field we just came from and the one next to it. Shoe said lets walk around the out side and look for sign. We headed into the next cut corn field and its good size with another field to the right that is surrounded with woods. Horseshoe starts glassing the two fields. He says hey I think their are turkeys in the field to the right. Then he say's yep there turkeys and thing the last one on the left is a tom. He asked we "well do you want to make a play or leave them for Friday morning'??? Well that's like asking if a fat kid likes cake!!!!!! Yea, lets do it. He told me to work my way to the corner of the two field and he was going to work his way down about 1/2 way and call when I was ready. I started down to the corner and a big bird took flight. I was thinking OH SHI* they herd my big a** trying to sneak up on them. Shoe throws up the bino's and says "It's only a Sand hill the turkeys are still there" So I work my way to the corner where the two fields meet. They are separated by a drainage ditch with a thin brush line. Horseshoe give's a few clucks and a few soft yelps and the BIG tom fans out to show his stuff. It felt like my hart was going to jump out of my chest. I started sweating like crazy I could feel it running down my back and the back of my legs in to my boots. They were about 250 yards out. The BIG tom was like a rancher herding his hens to see what fresh meat was yelping the the back corner. Horseshoe would call and he would fan out. I think there were seven birds one of them the BIG tom and one Jake. The tom at one point chased one of the birds away from his harem. They worked there way toward us after about a half hour or so they were with in a 100 yards. At one point shoe started calling aggressively and pounding the side of this boot. That got them fired up and the hens started puttering a yelping back. I was crouched down so my leg and feet were numb. I had to stand up. When I did there was a hen about 30 yards out and she headed back toward the herd. BIG tom to did not appear to be leaving those hens so I backed out and did not spook them. I will work on them Friday morning. Horseshoe pointed out that when the BIG tom was waking his head kept jerking toward the ground???? Well I said that's because he was stepping on his beard. It was a supper" first" ever night out for me and I could not sleep last night thinking about my next hunt.
Thanks Horseshoe,

Sounds like you had a great evening and for sure you have a big bird to chase for the score board. Great news!
Just take your time, and remember it is 90% about how to position yourself to get him and 10% about calling.
I will say this again, especially of the birds in farm country where they live in family groups, unless you are going to poke them with an arrow, leave the decoys at home and position yourself where he is going, and be there when he gets there.
I wish I could go out with on Friday morning. Please keep us informed on how it is going. Shoot for the base of the neck and go get em!

Here's the scoop Dudes.
I've been taking one of my neighbors turkey hunting each of the last 2 seasons and on each trip out he has scored on jakes. This year I invited him (Gene) to hunt the opener with me at one of my "hot spots", which is the spot my Dad missed his bird on April 24th. The birds hadn't been spooked after Dad missed and wandered off putting. Over the next few mornings that I was able to witness sunrise at home they had settled back into their preferred roosts and weren't being molested by anyone else and gobbled relentlessly each morning.
I instructed Gene to be at my house and ready to hit it by 5:00 a.m. and we'd have about a 1/4 mile walk across open plowed ground and then 50-60 yds into the woods to the flydown area. This spot is along the Thornapple river and there's a ditch that snakes through it to the river. It had flooded this spring and there was little to no vegetation up at this time, big mature maples and black walnuts with a few elm, just a perfect spot.
We were settled into our respective spots by 5:15 and I told Gene that at this spot I had first dibs and that we would probably have a great chance at a double. As the sun started peaking through we could see 5-6 longbeards moving about on their perchs. By 5:45 we were hearing our first gobbles of the day only they were coming from a group of birds down river. I did some soft tree talkin and was greeted by 4 thunderous gobbles, the first of which came from over my left shoulder, a deep throaty gobble from a mature gobbler. Gene had his eyes glued to a good bird that was straight in front of him about 50 yds. The bird to my left gobbled about 6-8 times and hit the ground 10 yds behind me and behind a tree. As I craned my neck to see him I heard a bird pitch down near Gene, it was the one he wanted and he was ready and patient. As I looked back to my left to see the bird I planned on shooting he saw me and started running. I miss judged the distance when I shot and he was airborn and gone. Gene's turkey gun reported quickly afterward and he had his first ever long beard.
http://www.michigan-sportsman.com/photopost/data/500/Tony_and_Genes_birds_5508_001.jpg?583 17#, 9.5" beard, and 1" spurs.
We headed to the house for pics, measurements, coffee and to regroup.
By 7:30 we were at Gene's hunting lease and were greeted by a hen in the 2 track. Nothing materialized at this spot and the sun was getting high in the sky so I suggested Gene get his bird taken care of and I'd hit a couple other spots.
I made my way to my next spot about 9:30. A few loud clucks didn't solicit any response so I work my way to the edge of the woods and saw a stutter with a hen about 600 yds down the CRP field and along the river bank. The river is inside the woodline so I used the cover to manuever my way toward them. There were deer everywhere so I did my best not to spook them and took my time moving down the river bank. I finally reached the 5' dia. Maple that would provide a good vantage point and settled in to call. I had lost visual of the strutter and never did get him to answer but I had a hen come in behind me with some deer. After they all moved on I decided I call it a day and head into work. As I snuck out from behind the big maple I could see 3 longbeards making their way toward me so I repositioned on the other side of the maple and waited. The trio would gobble at every call I made so I decided to go silent and let them come my way. After about 10 minutes 3 heads appeared through the tall grass in the field and their curiousity was getting the best of them. At this point the river was to my right about 20' and they worked up to the river bank about 50 yds. in front of me. I was certain they'd stroll down the trail and right into my gun but the first bird flew across and landed about 50 yds on the other side.
This required that I move to get a shot. I was able to get turned without alarming the first bird and settled my bead on the spot he landed and waited for his partners to follow. When I heard wing beats the safety was off and he landed right in my sites. The Winchester reported and rolled him into a multiflorarose bush whereby his companions proceeded to kick his a**. This was quite the sight because the thorns on the bush were tearin feathers out left and right. The next thing I know my bird was chased out of the bush and into the river followed proptly by his "buddies" who were continuing to pummel the poor guy. This wasn't good because I started the morning with only 2 shells (remember I already missed once?). As I sat and watched my trophy standing in the river half alive and being harassed by his buds I came to the realization that I would be walking back to my truck with wet feet so I figured I might as well get it over with.
The bird was pretty well expired but it's amazing how active they become when you try to hold their head under the water, man can those wings move some water, so now it wasn't just wet feet. He eventually sucumbed to the victor.
As I loaded him into my vest for the trek out I found myself surrounded by 6 more toms and 2 hens which required and equally stealthy exit down the river bank.
By the time we got done wrestling in the river he was pretty ugly and I was alone so I didn't get any pics of he and I, just the pics for the contest. Here's the link to those. http://www.michigan-sportsman.com/forum/showthread.php?t=232302&page=4

Sorry I haven't got back sooner with an update.
Well... I'll try to give a condensed version.
Went out Tuesday night. The field next to the woods was freshly plowed with no birds in it. Headed out threw another field when I noticed a tom at the other end. Must have seen each other about the same time. He made a bolt into the woods before I could take an alternate route. This was 200 yards away from me. Very skidish bird. I made way way back from where I was at the night before. Heard a gobble as I stepped into the woods. Found a old fallen tree next to a nice size Oak to sit on the ground. I waited and waited and nothing. That was till about 8:15. seen a hen start to head into the woods. She turned back around and headed back where she came from. I knew she hadn't seen me. That's when I seen three deer cutting threw to my right. Minutes later, I then had another deer come in from where I had seen the first hen. (I'm getting a little long winded) Seen two more hens and finally the tom after shotting hours. Tom never did present a good shot, even if it was legal hours. It disappeared on me, so I couldn't tell where it was roosting. After the three hen had made it to the roost and it was getting really late ( 9PM) I stood up. I could see something making its way to me. It was another hen. She was a small one too. After some light putting, she finally flew up too. Well at least this night there was no turkey to meet me by the car. Just a deer that didn't spook till 75 yards out.
Well gotta go fishing now. I will post up what happened on last nights hunt soon.

Smoke - it at least sounds like you are into some birds, and since we are all walleye guys, I am pretty confident I know where you are right now. I have heard some awful good reports from earlier this week. A monster or two a night being caught as well.
It sounds to me like you need to find a way to get out there in the morning and hunt those birds instead of having to wait for them to come to you in the evening. Work, just seems to get in the way of everything?
You and Bucky are both in areas with birds, so you just need to bring one down.
Of course, if you are ever interested in having someone tag along with you, like this weekend in the morning, to do a little calling for you, I am dying to get back out the woods and I am only 20 minutes or so south. I am sure that if you know the land like you do and we can get one gobbling, we can certainly get him on the score board. Just a thought but don't care either way. I am routing for you!
Good luck to both of you guys. We are in 2nd place right at the moment, but with the areas that you guys are hunting in, there are some whopper birds out there that will put this tourney thing away.

Thanks Koz.
A summery of last night... Seen at least seven different hens and no toms. I think it's time to give up on this state educated bird and try one of my private spots.
By the way, I can't wait till this thread goes to 7 pages. That way I don't have to see that picture of the grill anymore:corkysm55:lol:. I might have to take you up on that offer. I will let you know Friday.

Friday 5/9
Set up in a cut corn field 6:45 two bird started to light up.One directly out in front of me and one off to the left. 7:00 I gave a few clucks and yelps the gobbler out in front of me light up again. Yelped again he responded again. Then two deer started thew the tractor opening and headed right at me. I did not call any more for fear they would bolt off. Both were bucks with about 2-3 inches of antler growth. The both came with in 10 yards then winded me blew and bolted anyway. Called a few more time with no response. 8:15 coyote came out of the woods to my right just out of range or i would be putting him in the smoker:corkysm55. 9:30 moved to the field row between the next cut corn field. Four doe move threw the Field I just left. Got set up along a drainage ditch and gave a few soft calls. A hen popped out of the woods about 40 yards to my right moved down 10 yards and went back in the woods. Red fox moved across the field 200 yards in front of me. Had 2 birds popping in and out of the woods out in front of me about 150 yards for the next hour or so. I would softly call and they would look but not move any closer. 10:30 headed to the field to the right where Horseshoe and I made a play on the tom Tuesday night. Got set up and gave a few calls and a tom gobbled about where the 2 birds playing peek-a-boo. I busted *ss back across the field. I would call he would gobble I tried to locate him but it is so thick back in their he must have been on the other side of the swamp. I tried to work my way threw there till 12:20. Headed back to moms house for a snack and to service the Johndeere tractor. 4:00 back to the drainage ditch field row. Called a few times with no response. After about an hour and a half 2 birds pop out of the woods about 150 yards out and move across the field and go in the woods on the other side. awhile later they pop back out but there is about 5 or six birds and the last one out is a tom all fanned out and strutting like king stud. Birds would look when i called but where a good 250 yards away and keep going in and out of the woods. So when they went back in I busted *ss back to the field row Where the shoe man and I saw the tom on Tuesday.
I got almost all the way down to where they were going in and out of the woods and I saw a hen in the field on the right. I was at the opening where the tractor drives from field to field and did not have much cover so I crouched down. The birds i was sneaking up on moved to the field to my right out they came one by one till olé tommy boy poped out. They were a good 100 yards out but i was stuck with little to no cover to move. I just lied down. I gave a few yelps but the tom was not going to leave this *itches. I was stuck there for about 2 hours they moved all the way from one end of the field to the other. I then here foot steps behind me?? It was 5 doe feeding in the cut corn they got to with in 15 yards and then moved off to my right. I would call and he would gobble and turn in circles showing off so i stopped calling and he moved out of site and went to roost. 8:30 headed back to the house.

I back home from hunting on Friday. If I did not get a bird Horseshoe was going to join me Saturday morning to call for me. I call the shoeman and we were on for Saturday. I filled him in on where I put the birds to bed and we decided to set up in that field for first light. I did not have my phone of a watch so I don't know what time it was but some time before 7:00 am a tom light up across from me then one off to my left they went back and forth for a while then I thought I heard 2 out in front of me. I was excited and ready to take my first bird. I had set up one the fields edge and a few trees there was a hen roosting when she came flying threw the trees I about crapped my pants. She landed about 15 yards out in from of me and I was thinking "cool" live decoy's. Horseshoe started to softly call. The hen out in front of me gave a few deep raspy yelps and slowly moved out in from of me to my right. A few more hens joined her out in front of me about 80 yards out and to the left. There was a rise in the field that I could not see over while i was sitting down. Horseshoe watch a tom and a Jake service all the hens and then they kinda scattered out in the field to feed. I did not see the tom or the Jake till I stood up after the hens all moved back to the edge if the woods to my left. The tom and Jake were over there all fanned out and spinning like they were on a slow moving marry-go-round. Horseshoe moved over to me and asked if i could see the servicing of the hens from where i was setting. He asked me what I wanted to try next. He said the tom was going in and out of the wood right by a bright green bush. He said we could try a set up in the woods where they crossed in to the other field the day before or move down by the bright green bush and try to make a play down there. I asked him what do you think?? He said I think they are going to come back out by that green bush. So off we went to try to get down by the green bush. Horseshoe stayed in the corner of the field and I started toward the green bush. I got down close to it and found a good spot up on a small rise with good over hanging branches for cover. Horseshoe starts calling and out pop's tommy boy. Not by the green bush but all the way to the other corner of the field. Horseshoe would call and he would gobble but was not moving our way very fast at all. The tom moved slowly toward us and hung up about 100 yards away. Horseshoe was doing very little calling but he was gobbling his head off at one point i thought he was on a string and shoe was pulling him right to me but that was not the case. The fields edge had a recess and I could not see the bird the whole time he was hung up gobbling away. My legs were so numb I had to move so I stood up but still could not see the tom. I sat back down for a while. Then we was gobbling and it sounded like he was coming threw the wood behind me. I did not have that shot so I stood up again. I was so scared to move and blow that opportunity by my legs were so numb I had to. Then he got lock jaw. I was thinking I blew it he seen me or something. I was standing with the gun but on top on my boot. I did not here him for what seemed like 20 minuets or so so I was going to take a few steps toward the fields edge to have a look. I took one step and had my feet together plaining my next step and then I saw two hens headed toward me 10 yards out. I was thinking move along but no they decided to dust them selfs right out in front of me. Now TOM showed him self at 20 yards. I'm standing there feet touching together gun but in my boot bugs stuck under my face net buzzing my ears and nose. Now what do I do?? I had a bug fly in my right eye but got stuck in my eye lash and flew out so i stood their with my eyes close for a while hoping the hens would move off so I could try to get a shot. I had the over hanging branches I my direct line of fire. I was waiting for tommy boy to take a few more steps so i would have a clean shot. No he would not move he was in full fan spinning circles for if two girl friends out in front of me playing in the dust. At one point I could hear something moving in the woods I was hoping it was not Horseshoe coming to find me but is wasn't. When Tommy spun around again I got my gun off my boot and half way to my shoulder. I was hoping the hens would not see me and blow it. He spun for the last time I got my gun to my shoulder and at the same time crouched down for a clear shot. When he turned all the way around and was facing me I put both beads on his head and squeezed the trigger and "POW" the bird was down. He did not even make another move he did not know what hit him. I ran out into the field gun raised and a "YAHOO". Then the hens took off and the noise i heard in the wood was a deer that jumped out and ran across the field. Horseshoe was laying right at the fields edge and had been waiting for me to shoot at any time. He was thinking that I feel a sleep because my wife accuses me of sleeping not hunting. He meet me at the downed bird with a congratulatory hand shake and we looked him over for contest points.
He said he has a "double beard" and looked like 1" spurs. He then called Kozbow to let him know we had one down. Koz congratulated me and I gave him the short story of what went down. That was one of the coolest things I have experienced and will never for get it.
I would like to thank Horseshoe for helping me scout and for calling for me. It took over a hour and a half from when Tommy showed him self till I made the shot. 55 pointer for "THE SNOOD DUDES"
Thanks again to all who helped,

Ole Smoke is a big waterfowl hunter, so maybe next time we will need to get them in flight instead! It could be difficult to get them coming in cupped up and ready to light, but I am thinking we could definitely get some flight out of them. In fact, that is exactly what happened after he shot.

I said it on the other thread as well, and I will say it again. VERY impressive that you guys are drilling them with your bows. That is awesome! Congratulations to both of you for a great hunt. Wish I could of been there. Wish I had the patience to sit in a blind, but it does sound like you have them pretty well figured out.
My brother landed in Grand Rapids from China on Thursday, (been there for a few months), stopped by his house and picked up his shotgun and went to Charlevoix County by himself to turkey hunt and pick some morels. He killed a bird this morning. Called two of them into 15 yards, while walking around picking morels.
I left the house at 6 AM, just got home a little bit ago. Deer Haven, is quickly turning into Deer Heaven! Put in a little over 2 acres of corn and soybeans today, did a lot of mowing (alfalfa and clover), tilling, fertilizing and liming and I will be planting more corn tomorrow and Biomax. I burned almost 15 gallons of diesel today at $4.59 a gallon as well.

Really quick Id like to address the blind issue...When you have the birds roosted to me its no different then if your using a gun....I mean we would have sat in the same spot and everything....I guess for the run and gun style it wont work, but if you do your homework like I did, it shouldnt matter bow or gun you still set up and try to call them in...Besides it wasnt that bad on the ol patince, with Hawk there it kept things moving...
Koz, you will hopefully get to feel like you were there when I can get ahold of the video...Hope everything goes good for you guys, Id be glad to be beat by you guys....just not team 2!

Well Dudes you've encouraged me through a rough spring with the issues I've been burdened with concerning the Matriarchs in my family so I thought I'd give an update. My mother returned home from the hospital today and is doing amazingly well. She was literally at deaths door a month ago and we fully expected 3-4 months of hospitalization and rehab.
On a sad note my 94 yo grandmother past this afternoon.
Thanks for the kind words, thoughts, prayers, and the gentle ribbings it's helped.

Bittersweet indeed. That is very good news about your Mother, and I hope & pray her recovery continues to go so well. My heart-felt condolences to you, your family & friends on the loss of you Grandmother.

Tony - Sorry to hear about your grandmother. What ironic timing for your family, with your mother coming home. Maybe everything was meant to be that way and had she passed a few weeks back, your mother would of not been healthy enough to be with the family. All the best to your family as you mourn her death.
Too bad the trilliums are not still blooming, some at her funeral would of been very nice. Maybe some other wildflowers are available.

Went out last night with no success. I never seen a bird. Left a little early to see if I could find some birds on the way out. Nothing but deer. I had one come running by me, less than 25 yards away. Then I had one walk up within 10 yards of me. Then I passed another one within 35 yards. It never cared that I was there.
Went out scouting tonight. Found a group on some state land. Then checked behind my uncles and found some fresh tom tracks threw the sand pit.
Heading out tomorrow AM to give it another try.

Great news Randy! You have your entire team in constant communication, and hoping you are going to bring home the gold!
I even think there are some folks on Team #1 (the traitors) that are cheering you on as well.
Go get us a big one, and lets put this tourney to bed!

I had a chance to take a friend out on Saturday, Isaac69 from this site. We set up in the "Honeyhole" back on the river where i and my dad missed and my friend Gene connected. As the sun came up we were in the birds, no less than 6 longbeards roosted on 3 sides. We heard some distant gobbles but the birds we were with didn't make a sound on the roost. As they pitched down one landed within range of Isaac but on the opposite sied of the tree we were sitting under. Isaac had a huge bird about 50 yards right in front of him that roosted only about half way up the tree, he pitched down in a low ravine and we didn't see him again.
We sat for about a half hour after flydown and listened to the birds gobble as they made their way to the field. As we waited we had 13 bucks, from 1 yo to 3 yo, stroll past us in single file. The 3 yo bucks had some tremendous stumps going, it's going to be a good fall.
After the deer moved off we headed to the house for coffee and to call the neighbor to see if he'd like to join us, he declined, but said we could hunt his 245 acre farm, sweet! We started on my lease that ajoins my neighbors farm. As we moved through the lease in route to his farm we spotted 2 redheads on the opposite side of the field. We hadn't called from that spot yet so we took our positions before I called. A few soft yelps and a couple clucks had them coming on a rope. The lead bird decided to try and circle to the left so Isaac had to move his gun around a sappling. At 40 yds I gave him the green light and he letr rip.
Stats: 10" beard, 7/8" spurs, and 19#

Omega58 tagged out on Saturday also (on his own) so I have one more friend to take this Saturday. I saw a HUGE bird last night that roosted behind the house, he was gobbling his fool head off when I was leaving for work this morning, could he be next?;)

Sounds like we needed to pack up Smoke on the bus and send him over to your house. Sipping coffee and shooting them off the deck sounds like a winning proposition to me!
Sounds like you are having some real problems this year with getting the birds to fly off the roost and land right in front of the hunters. Lots of twisting and turning going on over there in Vermont land.
Would seem to me, that you need to get out and practice a little more.

Yes, the fat lady has sung.
Went out yesterday morning. I only heard a few gobbles on the roost. Around 6;30 I had a hen stroll on by. She disappeared over the hill in the planted corn field. About 15 minutes later, 3 hens come running up over the hill and jump in into the same wood line that I'm in. A couple of minutes later I found out why. A yote came across the field in front of me. I sat for a couple more hours and did some very light calling, but nothing ever showed up. I left to try to spot some elsewhere, but nothing but deer. Came back to my first spot and seen three more hens.
Got back out to the same spot in the evening. I had hens come out of the wood work to feed. Watched most of them all the way back to the roost. Could not put so much a hair on any of them. Believe me, I looked really hard.
By the way, I only had two shots on goal. Boy thats one tough goalie.
Thank you guys for all of your support this year. It's been a blast. I know that I would not put forth near the effort that I did, if it had not been for continued encouragement.
PS, can I change my name to Whiff73?:lol:

Smoke - thanks for the update. You gave it one heck of a run, and that in itself is worthy of voting you in for President, if you ever choose to run against our national candidates! If you had birds gobbling in your back yard, or if you were like team 1, where you had a spot so good that you could shoot 7 toms out of the same blind, I am sure you could of brought it home for us. You had some tough ground to hunt.
Well, it was a very successful season overall. I had fun hunting with you. Too bad you could not close the deal, but you know, that is what hunting is all about.
I had a lot of fun on this forum. Met a lot of new friends, and my guess is that our paths will cross again, and again, and again in the future. Kind of like Groundhog's Day! (I am that little boy that keeps falling out of the tree)
Best of all, I now know what one my employees means when she talks about her husband's "fattie".:corkysm55
BigT -swimming the river to get a bird.
Horseshoe, banging one in the 11th hour.
Bucky - smackin a double bearded giant on his first season
Bucktread, totally embarassed of his teammates, puttin the smack on a giant and gettin the heck out of dodge.
I guess the tear gas, flaming cocktails, and rock launchers are going to have to wait until the fall deer hunting contest!
Boy are there some big dudes running around out there. Good thing all those young guys from MSU are not proficient enough yet in QDM to really consistently produce good bucks. They might get lucky once in a while, but we'll see what the fall brings.
