This should be a Turkey shoot...................oh wait it is!
Hey guys, I recruited another turkey slayer for the team....my long time hunting partner ruger44man. We have been turkey hunting together for....ummm, 16 years or so now, and Tom consistently puts good birds on the ground every year. Still trying to get him his first with the bow, but who knows...maybe this year! Here is our double from 2005.....

Notice the real light fan tips? We've got a beautiful strain of these birds in one of the areas I hunt. The area also holds several smokey grays, and one Monster Tom that ive been after for 3 years (I know hes still alive because flockshot and I saw him yesterday on a scouting trip) that has nearly PURE WHITE tips. Hey guys,
Just wanted to give a scouting report based on my observations from SE mich.
Gobbling activity is still very minimal, and the birds are still in decient sized groups. Toms are still grouping together as well. With the coming of the warmer weather, I expect things to change in a hurry.
The woods still held a good deal of snow early in the week, and hens arent going to lay eggs in the snow, so I figure the lack of receptive hens is leading to to gobbling halt.
I layed down a good deal of boot leather and found that even during midday, birds are still grouped, yet another sign that breeding activity is late coming.
When I get more info from further scouting trips, i'll let everyone know. To be honest, I just like to get in the woods and see turkeys. The only scouting that matters to me is the two days before season, as a lot can change in 2 weeks.
BTW, as for introductions, My name is Jason. I hunt and fish about 100 days a year and its definately my true passion. I don't claim to know everything, but I do hold a little knowledge in my head and if I can help with any questions, I certainly will. The only secrets I hold are the spots I hunt:).

Alright...everyone give a little bio so we know who you are. My name is Brian, and like I said I have been turkey hunting for around 16-17 years. I've taken several with the gun and am currently 3 for 4 with the bow. If you guys want to see some of my turkey kills, just check out my photos...there are a few pics in there. Well I'm back from Utah and ready for some turkey hunting. My name is Trent and I have only been turkey hunting for 4 years and have killed 4 birds in that time.
Being I am in Chicago, I usually only get one weekend to hunt so I have killed the first legal bird (Jake) I've seen every year. I actually have two weekends this year so I'm planning on waiting for a tom before pulling the trigger. I have two spots that are loaded with birds so hopefully I'll get a crack at a good one. Good luck to all.

A little more about me...
I'm a full time firefighter/paramedic in Oakland Co. Because of my schedule of working 24 hour shifts, (10 per month) I get a ton of time to spend outdoors (and believe me I do).
I would run circles around the energizer bunny and therefore love run and gun hunting. (You gonna quit smoking this year flocky? I dont want you having a heart attack trying to keep up:lol:)
I've been Turkey hunting for 5 years and have been lucky enough to kill 6 birds.
Things were rough the first 2 years but through all my failures has come consistant success. flockshot and I will be hunting hunt 301 pvt land. God willing, we'll tag out quick and have agreed to come help PaleRider (Russ) shoot a big ol longbeard in the face. (I like calling almost as much as shooting)
I'm still torn between using my gun or bow this year. Ive had success with both, and really enjoy using both. Ive been practicing shooting through my shoot thru mesh on my pop up blind after switching to fixed blade broadheads and have been super inpressed with their accuracy. I'll probally bring both opening day and flip a coin in the truck:)
Anyways, in less than two weeks, it'll be...yelp yelp yelp....gobble....Boom (or Twang)...and yaaahooo!
keep in touch boys!

jason, i dont think we should have to hard of a time this year, last year taking me five days to tag out is a record i hope, i miss those 30 minute seasons. lmfao!
a little more about me as well, my names adam and im a reserve police officer (glorified security guard) , im not nearly in as good as shape as firefighter but i some how manage to keep up, i think those gobbles put my system into over drive. lol. like firefighter, my scew ups are what i credit to my recent sucsess. We've done everything from choke on monster birds(me) to making piss poor judgement calls (both) to flat out doing everything we arent supposed to do. but in recent years we've seemed to find our grove as you will note by looking at either of our pics.lol. and jason, if i told you i was gonna quit, id be lying, we both know that, so dont ask. lmfao! but im thinking i might have to dust off the bow this year, so god help us all.
pale, we got tons of area and enough screw ups under our belt that we should get you a damn nice one if you need the help.
ive got a good feeling about this group.

Bio
Palerider (Russ) I moved last summer from White Lake to just south of Holly in Rose Twp. I have twelve acres here and plan to hunt in the “back yard”. I’m self employed and have a lot of free time to hunt and fish. I see turkeys here on a regular basis and there are a couple of real nice toms hanging around. However while I am an avid hunter I have never turkey hunted before and will except all the help I can get.
Hey Jason, Adam give me a call so we can do some pre-season scouting
I will post a couple pics of the latest avid I shot.:D

a little about me.
I am an avid hunter and fisherman, when i can get out. I have 3 sons, age 10,8 and 6. This year i will be taking my oldest out for the zz hunt. I have been turkey hunting for 17 ( maybe 18) years. Ack and I cut our teeth hunting state land birds in the hills of northern michigan. We shot a few nice birds then but messed up on alot more. I hunt saginaw, midland and gladwin counties now. As for work, i am a graphic artist at a magazine printing plant here in midland.
The largest turkey I have shot is one with a 11 9/16" beard and 1 1/4" spurs. I try to hold out for a decent one every year. I did shoot a jake a couple years ago because i had all of my boys in the double bull with me and they wanted me to shoot it. That was a great experience for all of us that day.

gettin close!
Well guys, I'm starting to get a little concerned. The last two days I have been driving around the section where I hunt checking the fields for birds, but for some reason they have moved out. Monday I took a walk around the woods I hunt and didn't even see a single bird! This is very odd since the winter flock stays in this woods, and they are ALWAYS there up until, and through the season. I hope they are just hiding out...I'm sure there will be birds in there by season, but it's just strange that they aren't there now. Hey Tom...guess I'll just have to go and shoot one over at one of your spots again!

Ack,
I wouldnt be too concerned. I scouted a ton last week and walked every foot of a 360 acre chunk I hunt. Birds are there 24 hours a day and I didnt see a single one. On my way back, I decided to pick up some garbage that was littered about the property. I picked up a big purple sled and walked thru an area I had just scouted 15 minutes prior. Low and behold I spotted a huge flock, including 2 smokey grays. Unfortunately, they spotted the purple sled in my hand and jetted.
The birds are there but are just laying low and keeping silent.
Ive never seen gobbling activity so late but then again ive never seen a winter as harsh as this one was in my 25 years.
Im hopin that on April 21st, the toms will be so ready to mount up that theyll come runnin and it'll be like shooting fish in a barrel....Hey, I can wish...

The turkeys appear to be roosting only about 150 yards from my house, and are feeding almost directly behind the house then the tracks lead off toward the open fields, if they continue this pattern they are so DEAD.

Hey guys. I just got back from locating a Monster Smokey Grey Tom! I know hens of that nature are fairly common, like 1 in 100, but Toms are like 1 in 10000. His Beard runs about 10 inches and his spurs are over an inch, but I wont know the final measurements till im holding him in my hands. I dont think he'll top my typical score of my bird last year, but if I get him im gettin a full body mount for sure!
That would be a great trophy for sure! About 7 years ago there were two birds exactly like the one you describe hanging around the property I hunt...unfortunately I never did get a chance at one.

So exactly how long do beards get? I swear the one I saw tonight was over 12 inches long maybe as long as 14 is that possible or just wishful thinking. I'm seeing turkeys every day now and I wake up to there gobbles.
Firefighter
04-14-2008, 09:17 PM
Russ,
Its rare to see a beard over 12", as a beard is nothing but course feathers and it wears as the bird feeds.
The state record bird had a beard exceeding 16 inches, but when they get that long, usually only a strand or two is lucky enough to reach that length, and the rest get worn down.
That being said, because the ground on your property is so soft and swampy, I'd be willing to bet a beard could reach state record proportions because wear would take longer. Do me a favor and try to get a look at some spurs through your binoculars. If they appear long, sharp, and hooked, you've got a real monster running around!

04-15-2008, 06:53 PM
Well guys I did some more scouting midday today.
I located fresh tracks at my genesee county spot but no birds. The water is so high they may be using another area.
At one of my Oakland co spots, I happened upon the smokey gray again, and stalked within 50 yards to the clueless tom. If that happens early next week.....you'll be looking at pics of me and him. There was three toms and numerous jakes with him. I could also hear hens cutting excitedly. The gray and another tom gobbled three times. I soon spotted another tom about 60 yards from the gray....Lets just say he was the dominant bird. His beard exceeded 11" and I could see his spurs with plain eyesight at 110 yards. He never gobbled once and strutted so hard while I was watching him i though he was gonna have a stroke. The smokey gray looked scared of him and kept a wide circle. I watched the birds silently for 30 minutes and snuck away undetected.
IS IT MONDAY YET????????

Russ,
If youve got the birds patterned, and you know they'll be passing through at said time, keep the decoy in the bag. Sometimes turkeys spook from them. Your spot is so good and the turkeys so consistant, i'd just call a little bit and wait for them to pass through on their daily routine....BAM, you'll be in business!

I had eight birds come thru about 7am three jakes came running for the deke about 20 yards from the blind, I passed on them I know there are two big Toms out there and I want one, also had a solo hen come in...........to bad it's not deer season, four in bow range. Well I'm back at it, just in for lunch.
Jason I'll call you tonight.

flockshot and i teamed up and he scored on a nice 3 year old (10.25 beard, 1 1/8 spurs, 22-25 lbs) (havent weighed it yet).
We then started running and gunning and I missed a nice tom in some thick brush . oh well, everyone misses at least once, lol. We then chased 3 more toms at a differnent spot until about 1230. They gobbled like crazy but had hens and would not cooperate. Im just charging my batteries, as weve probally put 7 miles of hilly terrian behind us so far. Gonna head back out around 3 and catch em in one of their midday strutting zones. If no luck, I saved my best spot for tomorrow!

I am back in from taking my son out today. Morning started off with at least birds gobbling from the roost. Heard some hens talking so i imitated them and hoped for the best. About 7am 3 hens came walking thru at 30 yards with a longbeard behind them. My son was just a little too excited to have a turkey at close range and forgot everything i had taught him. 1 missed opportunity. Went back out at 1 and at 1:15 another big tom came strolling in. This time he actually shot but missed. Oh well there is always tomorrow.

Hey Tom,
I bet your son will never forget the day and thats whats important. Every time out he will gain from your knowledge and success will come in time. Good luck tommorrow.
Russ
Nothing but bad luck for us yesterday...birds came down on the other side of the fence again and sure enough, went running over to an area that I believe the guy had been feeding them this spring. Anyway, without even hearing the guy call he shoots....and then a few minutes later shoots again! By now the 6 longbeards are spooked...then we hear ANOTHER shot at them down on the next property. Needless to say these birds were TOTALLY peppered this morning and, if they are even still in the section, will be VERY difficult to hunt now. Not a good morning for us...hopefully things will calm down a little so my boy can get his bird!

finished scoring my bird. 10" beard, 1" spurs, and the thing was a tank at just a few ounces under 25 lbs. The heaviest turkey between the dozen or so flockshot and i have killed. Im happy as can be. It was a heck of a hunt and i'll post the story when I get more time.
Good luck guys!

After teaming up with my hunting partner and helping him tag a nice tom yesterday, It was time to fill my tag today.
The morning started off awesome, as we set up within 200 yards of at least 10 gobblers and unfortunately numerous hens. As flydown approached, we gave some soft tree yelps and putts. Once the first bird came down, My partner and I doubled up on wingbeats and flydown cackles.
Within notime at least 5 of the toms were headed our way...but so were the hens and ol henny cut us off. by now its approaching 7 am and im thinking about switching to plan B when I spot a strutter at 60 yards through the thick. He followed a hen across an opening and was on a course for a potential face to face with some Winchester #5's when 3 deer came waltzing in. They walked to within 10 FEET and blocked my view from the tom (who says animals dont talk to each other...the deer and turkeys were teamed up!!) The tom continued to pass at about 50 yards through the timber. I finally succeded in moving the deer, and with their snort, the tom let out his first gobble since he began his course my way. I elected to pass on the long moving shot, and he walked out of my life forever (or so i thought)
My partner and I decided to change positions, to better intercept other toms that i hoped would follow the lone toms route. I found a huge split maple and set up on the side i expected more birds to come from. My partner parked on the other side. We sat for five minutes, calling sporadicly and discussing plan C and when it would take place when my partner whispered "Jason, that longbeard is back"
"Where" i asked
"In front of me"
"How far?"
"10 YARDS"....
Oh $&!#! How am I gonna pull this one off on the tight lipped gobbler? My buddy said the bird was moving to the right, and I used the tree (thank god it was big) to shield my movement and get to a kneeling position. I started hearing his alarm putts as I rounded the tree with my barrel.
25 yards and behind trees...Crap!
30 yards and moving...I'll pass
35 yards...More trees
45 yards...Clear! I let out 2 sharp clucks and he stopped...
LIGHTS OUT! My jellyhead choke (shameless plug) held true to its name and did its job at long distance for the 2nd year in a row!
What an unconventional and exciting hunt! Two times I thought I was screwed and ended up being lucky enough to come out ahead!
The bird was the heaviest of the dozen or so my partner or I have ever killed, coming in at just under 25 lbs on a certified scale. His beard measured 10" and both his spurs measured an inch... A respectable 3 year old Tom.
Another awesome spring!
Great job guys...way to get things done!

I took my son out before school today in hopes things would come together fairly fast. Well they did. We heard a couple toms gobbling from the roost and soon heard some hens talking. I did some soft tree yelps, waited and did the fly down cackle. They gobbled every time I hit the call or the reals hens spoke up. Once on the ground, nothing. He shut right up because of all the hens. Now the waiting game began. we were hoping the turkeys would do the same thing as opening day and work our way and then out to the cut corn field across the road. I would purr every now and again hoping for an answer but nothing. We got caught up watching some deer around 7:00 am and then I thought i heard something to our left. I peak outside the window of the blind and 15 yards away were 3 hens. How did they get there without us noticing them? I look behind them and see more. I have my son get ready just incase there is a tom with them. As the hens walk by i notice one has about a 8 inch beard and I give my son the ok to shoot that one, then i look farther left and see a tom following them. Wait, shoot the tom, the last one in the group. So as my son tries to get the bead on the longbeard, he hits the edge of the window. He pulls the gun in, switches windows, lines him up and Boom. A miss at 18 yards. He slowly starts walking away, I rack a new shell in and tell him to shoot when he can. A second or something goes by and the 20 gauge booms again. He got him with that shot at about 40 yards. We run out of the blind and I stand back as he checks out his first turkey. 10" beard, 3/4 " spurs, and weighs in at a hefty 23 1/2 lbs. As you can read I am a pretty happy dad.

Yeah, c'mon...let's hear the details Russ! I was able to get out with my step-son Friday morning, but no luck....birds stayed out in the middle of the field and never did work our way. Hopefully I can get him out this weekend and get on some birds...it's been tough predicting the birds at my spot this year since they have been hanging in different areas this year.
Only a week to go until Tom and I get to go out! I'll be out shooting the bow every day this week getting ready....trying to get Tom to do the same. He says he'll try a few times with the bow, then take the shotgun out.....c'mon man, 100% bow this year....you know you'll get a shot eventually! Anyway, we have a couple of his spots that we've been saving for May, so hopefully the birds haven't been pressured at all and will be charging into our setup on the first day...hopefully Tom will be ready to shoot this time when they come in!

The alarm rang at 5:00am. I crawled out of bed and wiped the sleep from my eyes. Jason would be here at 5:30 so I hurried and got dressed. I when down stairs and started the coffee hoping the caffeine would clear my drousy head. I stood there in a stupor when I heard a car pull up so I peered out the window and noticed a car in the drive. I opened the front door to find a camo clad Jason shuffling up to the door in the damp morning air. After the customary greeting I invited him in for the newly brewed coffee whose aroma was now filling the air. We sat down and discussed our morning strategy as we drank our coffee. We looked at the clock, it was now 5:45 and we realized we must hurry to catch the birds coming out of their roost.
Walking out the back door with gun in hand, and now clear head, the anticipation of the morning hunt was as sweet as the morning air. Our walk, a mere seventy five yards or so behind the house, revealed a small wooden deer blind which I would station myself in. Jason opted to position himself on the forest floor in a dead fall fifteen yards or so to my left . The Turkeys were roosting two to three hundred yards to our right and Jason’s position would allow me to see the approaching birds first if all went according to plan.
Upon settling in the gobbles started, and the conversation started “gobble gobble” and a “cluck” and a “purr” from Jason’s magnificent slate call. This went on for some time as Jason pulled out every call known to mankind from of his vest pockets and proceded to “talk,” yes entice these Turkeys to come our way.
By 7:15 I saw the first Turkey, a hen moving on the far hillside about one hundred yards away. A few more moments and numerous calls later a group of four came from my right three jakes and a hen. I signaled to Jason and he fell silent. We could hear their footsteps in the dry leaves and we watched them as they passed by within a few yards of us.
We sat there for a few moments watching and listening, and then Jason started his incredible calling but this time to no avail. We decided, our stomachs decided, we had had enough and we headed in , it was all of 7:45 am.
I proceeded to make breakfast and we sat and talked of the morning hunt over bacon, eggs, corn beef hash and more coffee. “You know the hunter success ratio is only 33% for Turkey hunting” Jason said “Oh really” I replied “That one Jake had about a six inch beard” Jason added “do you think so” I retorted. “Should I have shot? “ I questioned, only thinking of our team and the low score this bird would provide. “Well that’s up to you” Jason answered “I’m sure you will get one tonight” Jason finished his coffee and made for the door “I have to change my girlfriend’s tire so I have to run along, good luck on your hunt tonight” . I watched as he pulled away and his words echoed in my head “You know the hunter success ratio is only 33% for Turkey hunting”, “That one Jake had about a six inch beard”. Should I have shot? Was I letting the team down? I knew their were two nice toms in the area as I have seen them many times feeding in the backyard. I wanted one as it would be my first Turkey I wanted to do it right.
The day dragged on and I found myself doing all the things people do to eke out a living in this crazy economy. I looked up from my computer and stared out the window imagining what the evening would bring and Jason’s words rang in my head “That one Jake had about a six inch beard”, “You know the hunter success ratio is only 33% for Turkey hunting."
It was now 5:30pm my wife was home, dinner was on the table but my head was about seventy five yards or so out the back door. I finished dinner in haste and stood up. “I haven’t seen you much lately” my wife stated “ah I know” I said “I will be in early tonight just want to see if there is any action out there tonight” I grabbed my gun and headed for the door. I stepped out the door and was drenched in the warm afternoon sun, walking past the gate I noticed two mallards male and female walking through the yard. I paid little attention and made my way to my blind. I sat down and soaked in my surroundings The birds chirped, the squirrels scurried through the leaves, the woodpeckers hammered on the trees. Then I caught movement out of the corner of my eye a Turkey, I’ve only been here ten minutes I thought. One, two, three, four, they rounded the slope. Three jakes and a hen, no wait, five was this the Tom I have been waiting for………….. Then it started my heart started pounding as I caught glimpses of it through the brush………… no it too was a jake, with a six inch beard , the one Jason and I had seen earlier. The words started to ring in my ears “I haven’t seen you much lately”, “You know the hunter success ratio is only 33% for Turkey hunting”, “That one Jake had about a six inch beard”, ”A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush” I raised my gun and poked it out the window. One, two, three, four birds passed. Where was that large jake? I aimed at an open spot and waited; there he was moving along the edge of the swamp, I placed the bead of my Remington 870 directly on him and pulled the trigger.
“BAHWHAMM”………………I saw him roll over and down the incline. All I could see now were his two feet twitching upright, his body hidden by the hill. Two jakes started to cluck and returned to their fallen comrade, I was filled with remorse. I let them pay their respects and watched as they moved off in the direction of their roost. I collected my bird and moved off to my roost revisiting the words playing in my head “I haven’t seen you much lately”, “You know the hunter success ratio is only 33% for Turkey hunting”, “That one Jake had about a six inch beard”, ”A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush”.
“Hey did you get one, I heard you shoot” my wife said as I walked through the door “Yes I did” I replied. “There were five Turkeys in the backyard chasing a pair of ducks” she added “really” I quipped “well there will be one less Turkey doing that”.

I think I got all the photos on so I'll give this a shot. Sorry, but this is long. Below is a photo of where we were hunting.
http://www.michigan-sportsman.com/photopost/data/551/Teds.jpg
My dad and I went out Saturday morning and set up on the edge of the opening marked by white x's with the blue x being the decoys. The birds were roosting in the red circle and were very vocal on the roost. They came off the roost and there was one big tom and 4 jakes that took the route in red from the roost out into the field and back again. Unfortunately they never got in to an angle to see our decoys and the closest they ever got was about 60 yards. The next morning we figured we'd move up the fenceline and nail them. We set up as the two yellow x's with the decoys the blue x about 30 yards out in the field. Once again, the birds were vocal on the roost but were with a bunch of hens and when they came down they went north and completely ignored us. We stayed where we were and called sporadically.
About an hour later two jakes came from the north along the edge of the field without making a sound. Instead of angling out towards the decoys they stayed right along the field and got to about 5 yards from me. It was about this time that I decided to take the bigger of the two not knowing if I would get back to Michigan next weekend. I was hoping they would move past me so that I could take one and my dad the other which would have been his first turkey. Unfortunately they got nervous and started to head back to the north. I raised my gun and took this one at about 10 yards. The best part was having dad out with me and getting the whole thing on video.

Nice pic Russ! Be sure to get it posted up with all of the measurement pics when you get a chance....we need to get rid of that little disclaimer they put under our total score on the scoreboard! Oh yeah...in the lead baby!!!
I have a really good feeling that either Tom or I will bring in some good points on Monday....we have several good spots to try that are still holding some very good birds. I am working on my secret weapon right now...let's just say that my Buckwing Bobb'n Head hen is getting a makeover, and she's starting to come together pretty good! Along with my new and improved full strut decoy I think we will draw in some shooters....we'll see some Monday! :coolgleam

I posted your pics in the contest forum so we should see the points soon.
were in second place right now!
When Ack and Ruger come through, we got it!
On a side note,
i took my dad out hunting this morning....Turkeys everywhere...2 big Toms...MISS. HAHAHAHAHAHA. Gonna rest that spot till Friday and try it again if we dont find birds in another spot.
Thought I would give you guys a quick update on how our opening day went, and even though no arrows flew we both came VERY close to tagging out yesterday morning. Had 4 nice toms work by us later in the morning at about 45-50 yards...easy kills with the shotguns, but just a little far for the bows. Had two hens walk by the Dark Horse at 5 yards...maybe 3, and check out my hen...never even spooked, which was kind of surprising!
We went on to work a lone tom that we had seen earlier across the field, and should have had him if it wasn't for us fumbling around in the blind trying to get a window open and into shooting position. We weren't even set up and calling for 15 minutes and here he comes across the small field.....we figured he would hit the edge and walk right in front of us. At about 15 yards he was still behind some brush, and then he decided to cross the fence row we were set up on....he must have caught some movement in the blind because he got all nervous and started to leave. Still no shot with him behind the brush, and he works his way out to about 40 yards or so...not a good opportunity with the wind blowing the way it was. We just watched him walk away as we shook our heads wondering what just happened. At least there are still 5 good birds walking around this property...it's just a matter of time and being in the right spot to get a shot at one..heck...we didn't want to be done on the first day anyway!

They must be cleaning thier birds pretty quiet here
I went out on Tuesday for a couple hours but the birds never showed...they were hanging out in a cut corn field a few hundred yards away. Let me tell you, it can be VERY frustrating hunting these birds...there are a couple toms that are ALWAYS with a group of hens, and unless you can get the hens to come to you, the toms won't even look your way when you call. Occasionally (like on Monday) you will get a lone tom that might be interested, but not too often. All I can do is put my time in and hope they come by the blind. I plan on sitting for awhile today, so we'll see what happens. I think Tom may be hunting one of his spots today as well, so maybe he can connect. I will try to keep you guys updated when I make it out, but just remember that I'm using the bow......it may take just a little longer for me to tag that longbeard! :coolgleam

Well guys...I made it out for a few hours yesterday, but was set up in the wrong spot again. Seems like every time I go out the hens walk right by me within 25 yards, but the toms are always out of range. Two big birds walked by me through the woods at about 70 yards...they only answered the calls twice, never even looked at my decoy, and just kept on walking....unreal! Feels like I'm sitting out there deer hunting these things....basiclally just waiting for them to walk by me. All I can do is keep at it and hope I set up in the right spot....still lots of time left!

Nice job Ack. That's a heck of a bird!
Just a quick update guys.....Tom and I went out yesterday and were able to get on a few birds, just nothing close enough for a shot. Had two lone birds come in hot and heavy, that is until they saw the dekes...they just turned around and headed back in the direction they came. I know these birds have been hammered by guys from all sides of the section this spring, so I wasn't real surprised to see them act like that.
Moved on to another spot...located two strutters back in a cut in the field, so we set up around a small peninsula about 100 yards or so from them. They never did show, so we carefully walked over and hid behind a small brushy hill where we could see them. They were still strutting for a hen, and would not budge from their position. I was able to get them to answer my Fredrick diaphragm call, and also had the hen going NUTS calling back to me. The hen finally started working our way and we figured she would bring the toms with her....well, they started to move, but when she was about 7 yards from us she spooked and ran back to where the toms were. Of course they ended up following her, so that chance was blown also.
The birds are getting tough right now....there are still several toms with hens and you just cannot call them away. One thing I didn't mention is that one of the toms on our second set up was a beautiful double beard...not quite as big as mine from last year, but very close...maybe two 9" beards.....he's a dandy. If we can't get him this spring, he will definitely be on my hit list for this fall!!! :coolgleam

All right guys here is my story finally.
Like I posted earlier, Ack and I had been watching some birds wander around doing there daily thing for a couple days so saturday we waited to go out until we knew they were on the ground. As we drove up to the property, the birds were out in the field. Just like the day before. We snuck into close keeping a pretty tall oak ridge in between us and the birds. Setup within a 100 yards of them and hit the calls softly. To our amazement he gobbled and was going nuts everytime we called. And he had 4 hens with him. We could tell he was getting closer so i got ready. A few minutes later we see him pop his head up onto the ridge. That should have been a clincher right there but my gun was pointed a little farther north. so I had to wait till he moved that way. A long 30 seconds later, Boom. That was it. But was it the double beard we both thought. As you can see it wasn't. That one should be a monster next year.
Tom
Count me in too for next year.

Hey WMU05, sorry you can't make but if you stop in to the Ginger Man bar by Wrigley Field and ask for Terra she will have a free drink for you, she works Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Congrats on a job well done.

Well guys, time to put the wraps on another great spring. I was having my doubts about my season in the beginning, but everything worked out perfect in the end! Congratulations to everyone...way to step it up and come through for team!
Palerider...great job on taking your first bird, you are now hooked for life.....congrats!
WMU....you were kind of the quiet guy of the team, but came through with a true trophy, the DOUBLE BEARD...great job!
Flock and Firefighter.....you guys have this turkey stuff figured out, and of course came through BIG time for the team...awesome effort!
Ruger....well, you sucked this year, waiting until the last day of the season to get your bird...pathetic. Just kidding man....you were the hero of the team, sealing the deal in the end to send us home with the cup...great job!
Like I said before guys, I hope we can keep the team together for next spring and make it TWO in a row! I look forward to chatting with you guys in the future, and let's be sure to all get together about the contest next spring...take care guys! :coolgleam

Hey guys sorry to rain on your parade but next year I already started setting up the rules and thought we are only going to have 4 guys to a team so there will be more teams getting invloved.
Just kidding guys, congrats on the win. You guys sure know how to work as a team and get things done. I hope to see all of you next year.
Oh yeah I almost forgot, Firefighter you need to work on the Miss America Speech because it was very unoriginal. In fact I think it was as lame as something Hawk would say. Step it up a little.

I can make calls for everyone, and I can do the labor for free, but I'd have to charge materials (less than 15 bucks per call). I can make all of them out of the same run of wood so they look the same and and put any surface in them.
I'd like to do it for completely free but I's not a rich man:D
Let me know what you guys think

Gee Jason I don't think you should work for free even at $30.00 what are you making three bucks an hour?

slate, glass, crystal, aluminum, copper and rarely ceramic (its impossible to get)
My favorite is the aluminum....next is slate.
Copper sounds super raspy and its awesome, but its touchy as hell, and you need to get super proficient with it (its takin me 6 months to get halfway decient with mine.)
Cool....I'll figure out what will work best for me and get back with you. I'm still working on ruger to get one too, but he disappeared from the thread all-together....loser!:lol::lol:

get the aluminum ack, its not the super glare kind you get in stores, and it does indeed sound super dooper...i do however really like the slates i have...called in 4 different toms with the magohany slate on my girlfriends last day, she either couldnt see, couldnt move, or flat out missed all the birds...lmfao! i was rather mad. but oh well...tis hunting.

I was thinking of going with the aluminum. I have an Away aluminum call and love how it sounds when I can get the right note on it...it can be a little squeaky if you don't get the right angle with the striker.
