Be sure to review the rules.

Mornin'! One great thing about Michigan is its hunting and the possibility that we could someday get rid of Metro Detroit and just give it to Canada. Ok... maybe the hunting part is true but let me dream. Late 2006 I get a phone call from my brother saying "Hey... ever think about trying turkey hunting?" Little did I know I'd be hooked the moment I set foot in the woods. I'll spare you the entire litany of my hunting experience except to say I grew up in Manistee County and could literally walk out my back door and hunt about anything I wanted. Drive another 1/2 mile and the acreage was nearly unlimited to do the same. As far as turkey goes I never hunted a bird until last year and its going to be a life long passion, Lord willing. This year and last I'll be hunting with my brother in Alcona County on 200 acres of private land that butts up against Federal land so the opportunities are great. I recognize I have a lot to learn and have been really working on my calling to bring in the long beard. Last year I nailed a nice jake on the second day of season. Unless it gets right down to the wire I won't be taking a jake this year. The property is 5 hours away from my house so scouting is the biggest challenge but I'm going to head over there on the 17th and spend all the time before the opener scouting. Its a challenge but I, unfortunately, don't have the time to get over there before that. I hunt with a Winchester 1300 Ranger, 28" barrel, and TruGlo Gobble Stopper Extra Full Turkey Choke. I'll be hunting with 3" Remington Nitro Turkey #5's with 1.5 oz shot. It patterns pretty good! I am partial to diaphragm calls and have been really working on realism, inflection, and cadence in my calling. However, I also will be using numerous friction calls including three different box calls and four different slate calls. Bottom line - I'm pretty excited about turkey!

So... take a minute and give everyone a rundown. Feel free to be as detailed as you want. It be nice to get to know a fellow hunter a little more. Take care and God bless...

Salutations fellow Beard Collectors! My name is Jorden, and I will be hunting a new property this year. My father and I have access to 40 acres in Montcalm Co. (my home county!) I hear that its loaded with birds so we'll see. If that doesn't work out I have 30 acres in Sidney and also 80 acres near Greenville. I will be hunting the ZZ 0234 season this year so hopefully the birds are still horned up by then! I'm using my trusty Remington 870 express 12ga. I've downed one bird with it, back in 2002 before I joined the Coast Guard. Last year was my first year back at it, didn't take a bird but I learned alot so hopefully this year will go smooth! Looking forward to share some stories with you all and good lord willin and the creeks don't rise we will all get a bird!

Whats going on team, my name is Tim. I got in to turkey hunting two years ago and have been lucky enough to get a bird each year. Both where big birds both having 10" + beards. I am an active waterfowler, upland hunter and right now chasing the walleye. Can April 21 get here any faster.

. Can April 21 get here any faster.

Oh man ain't that the truth!

Please to meet all of ya. I'll be getting after my brother to stop in and introduce himself. He's pretty geeked about the season as well.

Aaron - without giving out your honey hole where abouts in Alcona will you and your dad be hunting? My brother and I will be at turkey camp not far from Black River. Beautiful area and some gorgeous birds! We spoke with the people who live on the front section of the property and I understand they still have a fair amount of snow. That might just make things interesting. Also - last year I couldn't get the birds in that area to gobble at a crow nor owl call. Well, ONCE pre-season I heard one gobble at a raven flying over so I pounded him with my crow call and he fired back... once. LOL However, every flock of geese that flew over the gobblers went nuts. Then the second day of season a house burned about 3 miles from the spot we hunted and evertime a fire truck would sound off the gobblers would start gobbling. LOL! Needless to say I picked up a goose call.

Tim - Good luck on those walleye! What's been working for you?

Jorden - Good ole reliable 870. Last fall was the first time my dad ever hunted turkey. He insisted on using his 870 despite not having a chokable barrel. Using some fighting purrs and angry clucks I called a flock within 17 yards of him and he put a nice hen down. He can use his 870 all he wants!

Calling techniques - I realize you ask 10 turkey hunters the same question and you'll get at least 15 different answers - LOL. However, what is your preferred calling technique? Me, I'm very partial to the diaphragm and have put hours into practice and adding inflection and such to it. However I've been spending a lot more time on my friction calls (box and pot both) trying to get better. I'm starting to like what I hear out of my box calls. When I first sit down on the woods I use tree calls, soft yelps and real soft clucking, until I either hear a bird pitch down off the roost or the gobblers really get fired up. From there I just try to mimic what I hear in the woods. Silent woods? Free for all. I start off easy then get all worked up for a few minutes then settle right back down and wait. I'm not a patient person but I'll tell ya - turkey hunting will do it for ya!

Umm we are going to be hunting around hubbard lake, my uncle has some clear cut timber on his land and this is going to be my dads first hunt up there. I believe we are going to be heading up next weekend to do some scouting and check some stuff out.

Sorry Team,
Been working all weekend and didn't get a chance to chime in. I started hunting turkey's last year and immediatley got hooked. My good friend and I hunt a 42 acre parcel in hillsdale butted up with the st. joseph waterfowl preserve. Last year was just amazing my buddy got the first week and I got the second. The first was a learning curve, no decoy just calls. Saw toms just couldn't get them in. Went and bought a decoy for the second week and I didn't last in the field a half an hour. Heard the birds gobblng in the roost from camp, ran out to the field, called for 10 minutes and bam there he was strutting up to the decoy 20 yards out. Got my first tom and am kinda spoiled first bird with 9.75 inch beard. Been seeing quite a few birds this year already with about 5 toms and 3 real nice looking birds so we will see. This is a great thing getting to meet all of you and go into the season with some extended hunting buddies. Good luck to all and keep posting on scouting, hunting, or heck just shooting the breeze.

Josh

Oh yeah,

My arsenal consists of my faithful 11-87 with hastings turkey choke and remington nitros #6's. My calling is a mixture of box and diaphragm calls. I was looking into getting a jackpot slate but just can't seem to learn how to use it yet. I have been practicing alot with the diaphragm calls ( getting the wife mad ) and I Think I sound ok so heopefully the turkeys do too.

All right I am here. Don't get online munch during the weekends. Hubbard Lake is only about a 15 minute drive as I recall from where we will be. We have a friend of the family with a cabin over there. I hope the turkeys are in the mood to cooperate.

I will be hunting with "Orcrist the Gobbler Cleaver", or more commonly known as my New England Firearms 12 gauge. Hey it aint expensive but it kills em just as dead as a $1200 Benelli and I don't have to obsess over it as much. I named my 20 gauge "Glamdring the Squirrel Hammer". I am sure you Tolkein fans will appreciate that.

Good luck to all

TV shows - what sucks is some months back Chater bumped the Outdoor Channel up to premium so I'd have to pay even more to get it! I still have VS but they don't seem to have the same volume of turkey hunting shows.

For some reason they keep playing the same turkey hunting revolution over and over again. At least I have only caught the same one. Seems like last year there were a lot more Turkey shows.

I will say I was very impressed Outdoor Lifes Turkey articles this year. Last year there were only a couple of articles in a couple of issues. This year they had at least 4 decent articles in one issue.

Be thankful you get any hunting shows at all! I took my cable down to the VERY basic level...I only get local channels, and the c-span crap! I did keep my digital box so I do have on demand, they usually have some good little segments from the vs. channel, but thats about it!

Sorry fellas, swing and a miss here. Had a good time hunting, and birds were there, but no luck getting them into range. That is except the one Bachflock struck up, and I pulled him in when he was so close to Bachflock he had to quit calling. Can we count that one as two birds? Hope the rest of you do better than I did.

Weather was really warm 70's in the afternoons. The two days before and opening morning the birds were calling off the roost, then a front went through and the birds were silent the next two mornings. They were still there, but I didn't get one going.

To be honest, I am still learning a lot about turkey hunting, and this year was a great teacher. I was hesitant to join the contest, and probably shouldn't have. I hope you have better luck than I.

Well sorry all, I have only been on the comp a few times in the last couple weeks. I have hunted hard the past 2 weekends just to come up with a little jake. I am really bummed that I had to take him but I was spoiled last year with a big tom 30 minutes into the season. I waited till the last hunt yesterday and that was all I could call in was 2 jakes. I had so many hens out there that I couldn't get the toms away from them. I had a big tom running around the field on saturday and sunday just couldn't pull him from the 3 hens he was tracking. I had called in the 2 jakes both days last weekend and both days this weekend. yesterday I had them in front of me for an hour trying to wait out a big tom and finally had to take one an dstart packing up to come home. Was pretty neat to watch the other 3 jakes out about 100 yards all fanned out trying for the 5 hens that were wandering around. All in all fun time out in the field. Guess the 1 neat thing about the jake is he does have a split beard, not sure if it counts as 2 beards or not but I will get my pics up when I get home from work and let everyone decide on the scoring. Anyways got to get back out and try to get my wife that big tom now, she got the OTC private so should be a little better once all the hens start to get on nest.

Swizel, no problem man, thats why its hunting and not killing! Daxx, A jake is still a trophey in my book and you put some points up for us so thats good! My season started yesterday...Got out a little late and the dang brids were already off there roost's. Had a gobbler gobbling, didnt even get time to set up, thought he was heading our way, but he must of got henned up before he made it to us. So we ran down and set up, waited and waited, nothing. So we took a walk and sure enough about 200 yds down he was doing the nasty with miss hen:yikes: So we ran around back behind him on another trail, got set up again, did some puttin and purrin...called in the damn hen! She left, so we got up and started walking, doing some cluckes along the way...Gobble, gobble, gobble... Set up, waited, nothing. Damn another hen was between us! So we hung it up till the afternoon. Set up where I thought he was gonna travel to the roost...Wouldnt ya know it he comes out about 200 yrds further down! So he gets in there. I start doing some yelps, clucks and purrs, Gobble, gobble, gobble.. Oh yeah he's gonna pop out any min. I know it...Nope, that bastard just stayed in the thick stuff, he was close but he would never come out. I tried everything to get him out too, but I guess it was too close to bed time and he didn't want to travel too far! Well I guess I cant make it back out till this weekend, but I think I got that old bird figured out now:rolleyes: Yeah right!

2 beards count separate each beard scored 10 points and spurs were 5 points a piece so you have 30 total points

Vance busted a double bearded jake two hours before we broke camp. I will shake his tree to get it posted. He has a lot on his plate, but at least it would be some points...

Hey guys... I haven't been keepin' up. My apologies. I took my bird on the last day, with an hour and a half left before we wanted to be on the road home. When I heard him comin' in I was hoping he'd be dragging his beard a foot behind his legs - LOL! Well, he ended up being a double bearded jake. I was tempted to let him pass and see if he'd make it into Swizelchest's set up but I just couldn't do it. Double bearded jake - beard 1 - 4", beard 2 - 3.5", both spurs 1/4" - about 15 lbs. It'll do!

Since then I've been tentatively hired at a job in Traverse City, put my house up for sale, getting it fixed up, packing things, working OT at my current job, etc etc. My apologies for not getting this on sooner! I'll try to catch up later.
