Hey boys, I'm here. I used to shoot Dartons exclusively, great bows. But two years ago I bought a Parker and love it. Anywho it's almost time, these next couple weeks can't go fast enough. Wish all you guys the best out there this season. Are we an all bowhunting team?

was this English? im confused?

i aint going no where boy!

talking about this season coming fast... i am going to try not to be on here much until around April 24th or so.... i know thats probably unlikely because i think i have a problem.... i think im addicted to the site... im thinking about contacting Steve to see if he knows any good counseling :help:

but we will see how it goes... only 4 papers and 5 finals to go.. (possibly 4 finals... depends on what my grade is in the class).... but i will at least give you that tally when i finish a paper or final.... i cant wait to be done!!!!

steve1983 gave me the idea... here is my bird from last year
http://www.michigan-sportsman.com/photopost/data/520/medium/Turkeystanding_up.jpg

scored 16 4/16... had a 12 and 15/16in beard left spur was 1 9/16 and the right spur was 1 12/16.....
bird was a hoss.... only weighed 20 lbs... he was an old geezer for sure... there was one with him that had a bigger beard but i am not sure how big its spurs were... i was more than happy with this one and will try to do it again next year... but will be happy with any mature Tom :)

Nice bird. I've always been told the bigger more mature birds always weigh less, because they're doing all the struttin, fightin, and breeding. Which is why the heavier birds are usually younger. Hope you do just as well this season.

HunterHawk
04-06-2008, 04:49 PM
Yeah my boss did site checks the other day and he said he would kill me if i went down to cedar fest so i decided against it... he said he talked to the cops and stuff and told him they werent going to be messing around if the crowd started giving them trouble.

ps. the gas does burn and make you cough... never experienced it myself because i am pretty quick but my buddies g/f got it a few years back when there was the riots.

I think the shot placement is a little far back... see that crease in the brown part.. i would aim in the black part... just above that crease in the brown part and i think you got it :)

ps the chicken thing was great.... you are on a roll lately... keep it up... back to school i go

oh and if you could shrink it so its not HUGE.... and make his beard a bit longer.... that only has about a 6 in beard....

also did you trace your hand on the computer screen when you were making that turkey chicken? and i know you got an A in art because that thing is awesome!

I think i am going to have to bring my bow to my house in east lansing again this year and shoot in my basement.... i do it for deer season every year... i didnt really like how my bow was shooting last season so i have to make sure everything is good to go before i pull up on a turkey... last year because of my shoulder surgery i had to use my cousins bow which i turned the poundage way down on and i pretty much made my own blooper tape on one bird :(... it was pretty pathetic.... but i was glad i missed him because then i got the monster so everything happens for a reason.... but since i dont have much time to hunt this season i have to make sure to smoke the first monster i can get to come in....so good call

its time to pull out the darton death trap... point the arrow in the direction and this is the last face that turkey is going to make :yikes: THUD

I heard that you had to turn your bow down to 35lbs, I was talking about it to my dad, and my sister said that she felt bad for you. She offered her bow to you, if you would like to use it. :evilsmile

Good luck with that sholder, I had the same problem two falls/springs ago. I was lucky enough I didnt have to turn my bow down though, I just couldn't shoot very long. Still have a little trouble with it when I shoot for a long time.

haha good call dan... scary thing is my 1st two shots hit the cement wall in my basement (completely missing the target)... in the process i glazed my fist off my face, hurt my wrist and messed up the shoulder i had surgery on... called my uncle and told him something was messed up and described to him what had happend and he informed me to adjust the screw on my release.... and it fixed the problem... I WOULD HAVE BEEN SOOOOO PISSED if a big ol tom walked out and that happend :( ...plus afterwards i was a bit trigger shy... takes a bit to get your confidence back... and man o man my shoulder is killing me... i shot pretty well though.. and i hate to admit it but casscity shot pretty well also.. sucker shot my arrow a couple times.... the two arrows that hit the cement wall arent in too good of shape as you can imagine...i was at full draw both times it happend :(

oh well... that is why you practice i guess... back to writing the papers i go

just found out my uncle bought a new camera too.. so thats pretty sweet... he didnt buy the one i was hoping he would buy but i guess he got a decent one...so we will see hopefully we can post some video too

PsEbUcKmAsTeR17
04-15-2008, 06:17 PM
Hawk,

I know what you mean. The other day my dad and I were shooting, I went to draw my bow back and got about half way back and snap. My arrow goes flying, and I hit myself right in the chin. I thought my string loop snapped, but it didnt. We thought maybe I didnt have it closed right or something, so I go closer to the target (just in case) and tried it. Snapped off again and I hit myself in the chin again and my arrow goes straight up and hits a branch (lucky for me I didnt have to chase another arrow). So I didnt know what was going on. I looked at my release and the head doesnt close all the way when you close it. It was slipping through just enough to make my arrow go flying and make me hit myself in the face a few times.:dizzy:

did a little scouting/ woodchuck hunting and came up empty handed pretty much on both accounts.... i didnt really scout too hard though because i was out in the fields most of the time looking for chucks.... i saw a few turkeys here and there.... ill do my scouting when the time comes....

i did see a smokey grey... but it wasnt on my land.... however it is on one of our buddies pieces of property and i couldnt tell if it was a hen or a tom... i think hen because i saw 3 big toms struttin... but who knows.... either way it will be cool to get her on video during the hunt if nothing else...

Birds were very tight lipped in my neck of the woods. Never heard a gobble in 7.5 hours. Wouldn't respond to anything. Hopefully they're a little more fired up tonight. Good luck men.

06:00- Got to our hunting grounds just as we walked in off the road we had a tom gobble about 40-60 yards in front of us. We rushed over and set up as quick as we could, about 50 yards away from the tom. After we got set up we listened to this tom gobble for about 10-15 minutes and heard two other toms to the east of us about 700 yards start cutting loose. Then the gobblers started going nuts. There was gobbleing in all directions. At least 6 different gobblers, within 1000 yards. Sat for about 15-20 minutes before calling. Started out with soft tree yelping and then about 06:25 did the fly down call.

06:30- The tom that was about 50 yards comes down and goes the other direction. We hear him gobble about 100 yards away. Off to the west, to the pond for a drink of water. We listen and call for about 5 minutes. We hear a hen clucking about 50-75 yards away. It sounds like she is coming our way.

06:45- Thing start to get silent within 200 yards of where we are sitting. We do a few soft clucks and purs. About 1 minute after we hear what sounds like a hen cutting. I look over my sholder out the window and see a tom standing there. He stops and as he clears the corner of the pines where he can see pretty boy and girl. Hangs up for 2 seconds and halls @ss....

The other way....

07:45- All is silent for and hour so we decide to move our location to see if we can get them eating in the farm pasture. We start to head out and just get off our property to the farmers property and hear gobbleing about 100 yards away. We set up and start calling. The birds dont respond, so we wait for a couple minutes.

08:00- We hear the two toms about 450 yards to the south west of where we were sitting. We decide to wait for about 1/2 hour and see what happens. We hear and see nothing so we decide to move again.

8:35- We get to the field we were heading to and set up. Dont hear or see anything for about and hour and a half. We decide to pack it up and head home until this afternoon.

Well we didnt have any other option other than sit in the middle of the road, or go home. So we got as close to the wood line as we could without bumping him. Besides you can get under the tree they are roosting in if you are as stealth are we are. :coolgleam

When you move in stealth mode like the YDB's you can pull off moving into his back yard and not bump him off the roost.

05:45- Got in a set up in the same area as yesterday. One tom started gobbling about 50-60 yards away.

06:00- The tom starts gobbling, and we hear 2-3 more gobbles. We are not sure how many birds are there. At first it sounds like maybe two that are gobbling at each other. Then the hens start to cluck. We start to call softly back to the hens.

06:25- Two hens fly down about 60 yards in front of us. Start clucking and looking at the decoys. We start clucking back, and they just start walking around in the field. Then we hear the gobblers are down. One big boy about 9-10 inches comes walking up the outside edge of the field. We try and pull the hens closer but they are not interested. Then we see three more jakes come up about 10 yards behind the tom. They are all strutting and the hens start to work toward us. They dont come within bow or gun range. They stay out in the field and give us a show for about 10 minutes but we just couldnt pull them to us.

06:50- The birds stop gobbling and we hear nothing from the hens. We know that they are not in the area anymore and we decided to move to where we saw them yesterday and set up there. We got there and the birds (Sames as the ones earlier in the morning) were about 100 yards away from where we were planning on setting up. So we get in the ditch that runs the outside edge of the farmers field and try to get into position to where the birds were heading.

07:15- We try and run the ditch line and get into position. The birds are moving across the field fast and it is hard to cut them off. We see another flock of birds, with another big tom and a smokey grey hen. The smokey grey hen starts chasing the other two hens around the field and the gobblers face off. The tom that was in the field runs the other tom and three jakes off about 30 yards and the three hens and tom go over the crest of the hill. (This all takes place about 200 yards away)

07:50- We watch the tom and jakes strut around the field and try to get their attention. They just dont seem interested. We just sit and wait calling periodicly.

08:30- We hear a hen answer one of our clucks. We know they are still just around the bend about 100 yards, but I guess no decoy, not even pretty boy and girl are enough to pull them away from the real thing. They just stay in the field and dont come our way.

08:50- We hear the birds gobble and then we hear BOOM...... BOOM................... Cluck...Cluck.... BOOMMM.....

Well we were not the only ones in the field hunting these birds. We walk across the field and see who it was. The farmer said he had a guy that hunted the field a couple times but he didnt come back this year so he said we could hunt there. Well I guess he might be the guy that was able to hunt there but we didnt check him, not knowing who he was.

Anyway it was a older guy with his sons girlfriend and she was happy as can be. We asked did you shoot that longbeard the older man says "No." With a smile she says with a bigger smile " I sure did." Well it wasnt either of the longs beards, just one of the jakes, but it didnt matter a bit to her.

I guess it wasnt a bad day, I got to see two things I have never seen before a smokey grey turkey and two toms fighting. It was pretty cool. Too bad we didnt get a shot at a bird though. I guess that is the challenge of bowhunting.

Just from what my observations were and what worked both times opening day.

Simulate a hen fight and get loud and aggressive.. try to put out two hens about 40 yards apart and have one of you set up 10 yards the opposite side of the deek and the other on the opposite side of the other deek so that you have 30 yard shot to the middle and still all in all cover about 120 yards considering 30 yards max shot.. Start hammering away at each other and see what happens.. Just my .02.. Take it for what it is work but after a couple days of calling at them in the same area you will have to switch it up a little!

Both of the birds we killed were over a series of hen fights and excited yelps, clucks and cuts.. One was with a real bird and the other was me and John (Big Rack Mack) cutting into each other and simulating a hen fight.. This is what got them fired up and gobbling when nothing else would too!

Craig,

Yes they went the same way as yesterday, that is why we decided to move this morning. We though we might be able to get them off the roost and they out foxed us. The old man and girl were not calling or anything from what we heard. We didnt even know that they were there until they shot. They only had one hen decoy and the birds wouldnt work it either. The toms and jakes only followed the smokey grey around from what they said. They had to belly crawl to the birds and shoot three times and they got lucky..:D

Dan,

We are sitting in a blind so we can draw our bows back. I am probably going to try and see what I can do in the morning. Maybe I will try and see if I can make some sound of a hen fight. Well see, I probably wont hunt the roost. I am probably going to go to the spot where we seen them today.

Wish me luck.

Well boys we are on the board...

Here is the rundown.

17:40- We went to the farm field where we saw the turkeys yesterday morning hoping to cut them off coming back to the roost. We sat for about and hour and decide to try and move up the field a little so we could see over the crest of the hill, down to the corner that the birds were feeding in yesterday.

16:50- We get to the top on the crest and see something out in the field which we believe is a turkey, however we forgot the glasses at home so we were not for sure. We decide to get in the ditch and run the mile back there and see what it is. Get back there and see nothing and decide to head back to the top of the crest to see if we can see weather it was a turkey or not. Get about half way back and see that it was a flock of turkeys and they have moved about half way through the field and there is a tom strutting in the back.

19:10- We get back in the ditch and get with in 100 yards of the birds and watch them cross the field. It was the same three hens as yesterday, the smokey grey, and two normal hens. The big boy was right behind them. They cross the hedge row into the corn field, and head right toward us. They are about 60 yards and they are closing in.

19:35- The hens are about 10 yards in front of us and still coming. The tom follows right behind them giving dad a perfect shot. He ran about three steps and flattened out.

It was a great night and an awsome hunt. A long trip through the creek bed, but was worth every step of it.

Here are the pictures.

The guy said he has been watching a couple big toms come in every morning. They come in following a small group of hens. About two weeks ago he said he was watching 8 toms and 3 jakes with about 20 hens. Everyday the flock would get smaller and smaller, now it is down to about 2 toms and 4 hens.

So if things dont work out around the house I have the choice to hunt over there. Might try it this weekend, or early next week.

That was my post about my dads bird.:dizzy: But I see what you mean, it is just easier and cooler than saying am and pm. Was a little bummed this morning when I got up (late because of my alarm clock) and it was raining like a SOB and blowing like a hurricane and decided that it was pointless to get up. Well now the weather has broke so I am getting ready to head out. Wish me luck.

Good luck out there Pse. Someone needs to connect on one. I've had a few chances to take nice toms so far, but I've passed them up. Only because I have a smokey grey tom in my area I've seen from a distance so far this season. Nrver knew he was around, just haven't been able to close the distance on him yet, but I'm getting closer.I've had close encounters with some nice toms in the past few days, and one of my dekes paid for one of them with his life. Going to focus on the smokey until the last few minutes of season. Good luck boys.

Well boys, I guess I am going to have change teams, because today I shot a limb hanger. With the weather we are supposed to be getting next week and stuff I decided to go out this afternoon with my shotgun. We walked to the field my dad shot his turkey in.

1315- We walk to the field to set up and call, on the way we see three hens about 175-225 yards away, with the wind (I am guessing this is why) they dont run, just slowly walk away. We decide to get under a tree in the hedge row and sit for a minute and see where they move to and see what happens.

1320- I look to the west and see nothing but a red head peeking over the crest. I say to my dad there is a tom right there. We both start calling a little to try and get him to move our way. Then I hear my dad say there are two. Then I see there are three. They start to come our way. At first all three then just the big tom. (There were two jakes, and one tom) He starts heading toward us. He moves slowly, but he is moving, didnt stop to many times just once, then the second time wasnt his choice.:evilsmile He stopped for a minute at about 70 yards, I give him a soft cluck and he steps slowly toward us. He stops again at 60 yards and starts to turn, I decided to shoot. He drops dead in his tracks.

Not a long hunt, but exciting none the less.

Here are the pictures of my 22lb, 11 inch limb hanger.

Not so good last evevning. Never saw Mr. Gray. Saw three nice toms about 200 yards out, but would not make their way to me. Went out this morning and all I saw was a pair of pit bulls. Have know I dea where they came from, never saw them before. I think they had plans on getting my decoy before I jumped out at them and made them shat themselves and off they ran. Gonna head back out in about 30 minutes to set up in a new spot that hasn't been touched yet, know there are some nice birds in that spot. Tired of chasing mr gray, he has me all kinds of flustered, looks like round 1 goes to him. Hopefully he lives on through the season, and I'll stick an arrow in him this fall. Good luck boys.:)

Alright guys...I'm just curious about how this bird scores. I see a....

11" beard=20

1 1/4" spur=15

1 1/4" spur=15
-------------------
Total = 50

Just curious where the other 5 points comes from that you guys have on the scoreboard????

SPURS
3/4" or less 5 POINTS
13/16’’ – 1’’ 10 POINTS
1 1/16’’-1 ¼’’ 15 POINTS
Bigger than 1 1/4’’ 20 POINTS

Ack,

If you check the picture/score thread my dad posted a new post and points thing on there. I first put 1 1/4 for 20 because I made a mistake on the points. I forgot that I changed it to bigger than 1 1/4 at first I was going to put 1 1/4 or bigger for 20 points. So I just put 1 1/4 because even though the one was bigger it didnt get anymore points. But I was wrong and my dad corrected it the next day. Check the points/score thread and you will get what I am talking about.

After reviewing the pics today here are the stats I am claiming:

Team #1- Just passin' Thru
Smoknngunn

Spur #1- 1 3/16
Spur #2- 1 5/16
Beard- 11 3/8
Total score= 55 points

12ga Mossberg 9200
Winchester Xtended 3"
Undertaker choke
Time shot- 1945
Date- 4/23/08
Weight- 26.5lbs.

Jeremy has already posted the tape measure pics. One of the spurs is less than 1 1/4 as he posted, so it will be 15, not 20 points.

Hope this clears things up and there is no problems.

Good luck hunting.

It was just a couple hairs over 1 1/4 inches. Its not that big of a deal to me if its not to anyone else. If we are going to start getting super picky then we might just as well stop now. Its not for anything except fun, I dont see why anyone would cheat. Lets not start fighting over something as little as 5 points, that is what everyone that didnt want this contest to happen is praying for. Then they wont have to see us have another one next year. If we were trying to pull one over on someone then would not of made a new post with a correction the next morning. We would of just left it at 60 points as first stated until someone said something. Or until no one saw it and we had an extra 5 points that we didnt really have coming to us.

Good luck hunting guys.

im starting to think it might be better to hunt your long beard in the afternoon that way we could set up on him coming back into the roost... you know what i mean.... he wouldnt see you if you came in that back way plus it would be on the land you have permission to hunt.... just an idea:idea:

hey Dan why dont you take one for the team and maybe come video me in the morning... the key word here is SOMEWHERE... im not sure where i want to go in the morning :(..... my hunt is only a week long:(... if you want to go out and do your own thing and hunt though that is fine but since i am kinda pressured with only a week i want to take full advantage of it and go out in the morning... then i have to work in the morning... so if you want to take Dan up on it go for it because my dad will be more than happy to come video for me... as far as helping you move out... no problem just let me know...

im starting to think it might be better to hunt your long beard in the afternoon that way we could set up on him coming back into the roost... you know what i mean.... he wouldnt see you if you came in that back way plus it would be on the land you have permission to hunt.... just an idea:idea:

Hey sounds good to me. I have a month and not that afraid of not getting a bird. Anything to help us beat that team #2..So yea that will work. I like the idea of going after that bird in the evening better....

you are going out tonight... you suck... im going to be staying at my parents house tonight... you going to be able to wake up? maybe set your alarm for 525... it will be good practice that way for waking up early....

text me... im about to go get my neck adjusted by my bro and pick up my archers flame nocks from my uncle... thats why i am about to just go stay in mason tonight

Why worry about someone who is not even on the board?

From the sounds of things we have to worry about team #10. They are looking at a 80-90 point bird.:16suspect I think that someone might have a string around its foot.:D

Good luck everyone with your hunts starting next week.

Now that there is dedication. If there is a sportsmanship award, you should be handing it out here. Kind of like Lassie. (sorry, he might of been a little before your time)

Go Lassie Go!

I wish we had that type of dedication on our team, or at least someone that would show up on the "deans list" once in a while.

well tomorrow morning is the morning and i still have NO CLUE WHERE IM GOING!!!!!!.... sweet huh haha...i guess my uncle is going to video me because my dad has to work... and i believe Dan is going out to his lease....

My dad is on a roll!! this morning he got two kids their first birds... they were both brothers.... the one that was 12 shot his with his bow and was a monster bird i guess and the one that was 14 shot his with a gun and the beard wasnt as big... haha nothing like getting outdone by your little brother.... i think next year i would be out for revenge.... as of now im pretty jealous of these guys.... hope my dad can make some time for me if i cant get them in for some reason.... where to go.... where to go...

on a property that my uncle hunts next to they saw a tom with HOOKED spurs, said it is huge... i might be able to get on that land but if not my uncle said we could call from his place.... so that is an option.... we will see i guess....

hopefully we can add some points.... i know the weather isnt looking so hot either after monday so i hope things come together in the morning:(

wish me luck

Well boys, sorry I let ya down. First year in four I haven't bagged a turkey. Had multiple easy shots with a shotgun, just couldn't put that bow away, really wanted to arrow one. Wife says I'm just hard headed. Hunted from sun up to sun down Saturday, thought for a few hours there I was gonna get sucked up in a tornado, man it got wicked windy out there. Called in two 10"+ birds yesterday but both hung up at about 40 yards, and I don't feel comftorable enough to make that shot. Also called in a yote to about 10 yards yesterday afternoon, he just stood there looking around for about 2 minutes trying to figure out where the hen was. Didn't get out today, the boss(wife) said I couldn't because we had family obligations. No bird but it was a great season non the less. Hopefully mr. gray is around in the fall. Good luck to the boys just starting there hunt, go get em. Sorry again boys, although I'm sure you don't really care, as don't I that I didn't tag out. Just a blessing to be out there. To my teamates that got birds, congrats again.:)

Well this morning was an interesting morning to say the least. Last night my uncle went out to a piece of property he leases and said he saw 4 hens and could hear Toms lighting up like crazy in the woods and to our knowledge they hadnt been hunted, and the landowner right next to him said they had seen a monster and had heard tons of toms gobbling all over in the 1st season, so i made up my mind that is where my 1st set up would be of my week long season (ZE Private or Public)

Things started out a bit shaky at first, I stayed at my parents house because it is a stones throw away from the piece of property i would be hunting and my mom comes in my room at 440 and says hey i thought you wanted to get up at 430, i look at the alarm clock and it said pm instead of am..... not sure how the heck that happend... the alarm was set for am so i am guessing my mom set the clock... But what a mom.... i still havent asked her what the heck she was doing up but i am glad she was because i doubt i would have woke up.. so i was running around to get ready (lucky i got most of it around last night and i get down stairs and i try to call my uncle..... Straight to the voicemail... so im thinking crap he isnt up either, well i wasnt going to waste my hunt and we agreed on meeting at my house at 5 so i waited till 5 and started loading my truck....5:05 i tried calling again and no answer so i pulled out and got 20 yards down the road when i see a truck coming... its my uncle... his phone died the night before when i was talking to him and he didnt turn it back on... rookies

The Hunt

We still got there in plenty of time because like i said it was on the other side of the block (that was the stones throw, i got one heck of an arm), so we start the long walk back to where we are going to hunt, we have the pretty boy and pretty girl decoy bag filled with a couple extra secret wepon decoys, two chairs, my bow, the camera and the worth every penny double bull blind.... on the way to where we were heading me and my uncle kept arguing over where to set up, he wanted to keep going in towards the swamp and i wanted to set up more towards the field, well im not sure who won that battle or who was right or wrong because I ended up getting the turkey, but anyway turns out we were way to close to the roost... for me anyway... i would say we were between 70-80 yards maybe a little further from the roost and when the flew down sure enough they flew the other way towards the field! I WIN..... we sat there for what seemed like for ever and saw 1 hen and the Toms stopped gobbling completely once they hit the ground, I'm thinking oh no just like what everyone was saying on line...

Oh well I was out hunting... good enough and had heard what sounded like 1000 toms in the morning, it was awesome they were all around us gobbling.... I live for that sound!!!

So we saw one hen and heard a few other hens and no gobbles from probably 7 to probably 10 o clock... talk about depressing!!

I was doing my usual stick my head as close to the entrance of the blind as possible and look as far as i could to one side or the other and i see a huge REALLY PRETTY light brown fan all fanned out.... couldn't even see the turkeys body just the fan... but it was a welcome sight after not seeing anything for 3 hours... he was about 150 yards away or so when i saw him and for a while when i was calling he was on a string coming right in, i got all excited only to have him hold up at around 50 yards!!!

I have never had a turkey hold up like this, he must have been there for close to 20 minutes strutting and putting he would go one way that looked like he was coming in then he would turn right around and go back the other, i have never been so frustrated in all my life, I told my uncle i didnt want to shoot anything under an 8 inch beard, and i knew this turkey was close to my cut off mark but it turned into more of a challenge than anything at that point....

usually when they are strutting and putting back and forth they are within 20 yards or so and usually a quick arrow comes right after.

Anyway he finally got bored or nervous (my guess is he didnt feel like fighting the pretty boy and the hen wouldnt come so he was going to go find some more ladies) Either way he made a big mistake, instead of turning around and going the way he came he tried to just go far enough away so he was kind of going away from us but at the same time he was getting closer only because he had to go around some water, We werent sure the yardage my uncle said around 30 yards or so i guessed it at about that far or a little farther so i decided to hold about his head i figured because i only have one pin, the turkey was now on a quick trot trying to get out of there before pretty boy came over and chased him, I drew back and gave a couple clucks and he hesitated for a spit second he didnt even stop and WACK my spitfire hit PERFECT, i also had on the archer flame nocks and although it was bright out once it got to the turkey i could tell it was a perfect shot.... and like i said before there are certain times you get out of the blind and run to the turkey and other times you clearly dont have to, well like i said this turkey turned out to more of a challenge and even though i dropped him in his tracks i nocked another arrow and took off but he was down and not moving by the time i ran the 35-37 YARDS!!!! i paced it twice, once on the way back from the bird and once on the way to where the blood and feathers were... 35 the first time and i believe the 37 was actually more accurate... either way an amazing hunt even though it wasnt the biggest bird i have ever shot it was defiently the most challenging and i prevailed!!..

My uncle read this and just called me i forgot to mention, after i shot and flipped up the blind i looked at there was at least 8 birds with beards, i saw a couple long beards but most were jakes... i cant believe i forgot to add that and a couple jakes got some kicks in even after i lifted up the blind, pretty funny yet frustrating at the same time... where were all these birds between 7 and 3 haha

It had a 9 inch beard and i believe both spurs were 1/16th of an inch short of an inch :dizzy:... darn bird... i could have bent the tape measure and made it look like it was more:lol: but i gave the bird what he deserved!

**** Also part of my birds beard was froze off, this is like the 3rd beard that our group has got that the beards were froze off, dang cold snowy winter!!!!

I dont have the pictures of this bird i had to get it cleaned asap because of the heat but dont worry i had my uncle take a few pics on his camera and Dan (casscityalum) was nice enough to drive from Howell after his hunt to my house in mason and took the pics of my turkey for this contest... so the pics are to come after dans hunt.

That is an awesome story! I felt like I was sitting there watching the whole thing unfold. What a great hunt.

Sounds like you made one heck of a shot on him as well. Congratulations on a very, very successful morning.

I would love to hunt turkey with a bow. At the yards and opportunities I have had the last few years, the shots are not an issue. I CANNOT, for the life of me, see myself sitting in a blind during turkey season, waiting for a bird to come to me.

You bow guys have way more patience than I have. However, come the 1st of November, I can sit in a tree all day and be totally content.

Congratulations on the bird and thanks for sharing the story! Koz

saw a turkey, shot the turkey, turkey died, tagged turkey, im done, 9 inch beard, just under an inch spurs ... better?

Thanks for the complement Koz, and that is the longest i think i have ever had to wait for a turkey, thats what made this an awesome hunt, that and one amazing shot... my uncle is the one who sold me that bow quiet a few years back and i asked him today if he thought that was a good idea haha... i have gotten 4 turkeys, 7 deer with it in the last like 6 years... me + spitfires + darton = scary combination:coolgleam

Ill post this on the main turkey forum once i get the pictures upload and the Video.. the video wasnt horrible considered he had to video this turkey on a quick jog through the woods... could have been zoomed out a little farther so you could see how far of a shot it was and center it a bit more... but we dont claim to be professionals...we just wish we could hunt for a living

Great story like Koz said I was right there with ya. That was a he**of a shot. I'm dead on with my bow to 30 but out past 30 yards I wont shoot. It's 50/50 that range for me. I'm out with Horseshoe tomorrow after work to find my bird. Then I'm off work Friday so I will be in the big buck woods chasing feathers!!!
Thank for sharing your hunting story. I'm fired up now!!!!!

oh no luck for me today, I only hunted till past 11, Saw 1 tom, and then a few jakes before I then headed MSU to pack my trailer and move out of my apartment. Made it to my farm late and bumbed the birds out of the field through the help of the dang deer!!! might hit the woods tomorrow, but way I look at it, I do have a month!

(the sound of me clearing my throat):D

Excuse me fellas on Team #1.

As soon as Big T can afford some batteries for his camera, you need to add another 40 points or more to the Snood Dudes score.

Yes, it took us 4 birds to get there....but none the less, we are at 155 points with still two more hunters that haven't started yet.

See you in East Lansing on June 6th, BYOTG (Bring Your Own Tear Gas)!:evilsmile

Ohhhh....team Limbhangers just posted another bird, so that put them in the lead with 165 points I believe.

The contest will run from April 21st -June 5th, 2008. The winners will be announced after June 6th ,

This is the day that Jeremy will be announcing team snood dudes (the dysfunctional team that has not clue about anything related to turkey hunting) the winner!

Ever since Cass snuck into our thread and ragged on Big T - I just hope we keep ahead of you. I don't really care about the rest of the scores!

Man team 2 wants to beat us, Kozy Moto wants to beat us..All because I went over and gave Big T a warm welcome and good luck......???

Koz, Team Red Neck has a stacked team. I know they personaly have gotten 3 birds all around 10" and nice spurs. Their other two members-One doesnt shoot anything less than 9" basically and other has already gotten 3 birds this year between SD and MO.....heard he's also a calling champ....

So yes me and blittle have our work hard faught for us. I luckly have a month and friend that will help if it need be. Also like you said I bet Big T would help me get the bird if I needed him badly enough....Good luck guys!

2nd place is 150
3rd place is 120 (Team Lazy D)

Hey Cass, Isaac69 used me as a "last resort" last year and his bird tipped the scales at 26# with 1 3/8" spurs and a 9" beard. BTW, he booked me for 5/24 and 25.;)
Stats like that and you're still dissin me.:dizzy::rant::D:lol:
This is just for fun right? Well it'll be fun beating you guys, rest assured if you "settle" for hunting with Big T, he won't be lining you up on a bird that will tip things in your teams favor.:p:lol::lol:

Cass - seems to me that folks from your town are getting a little friendly with those toms! Not sure where Chuck's hand is , but I am guessing that bird just does not pose like that on his own!

Laying out in the middle of the street in public as well... Geez, glad I do not raise my family in that town!

If you look you can clearly see that this bird is in the back of Chucks tailgate...Also the hand is easily just holding the head and you can see the clearly defined hand and head facing the camera....

on a side note..This is a tradition, take your bird/deer/fish and get the local Newspaper to get your picture and story!! Great town and Hunter friendly:D

Cass -Based on what I have heard and read, you are sitting right smack dab in the middle of the best turkey country that exists in Michigan.

Even a "spartan" can shoot one there.

And I quote Great town and Hunter friendly:D You said it yourself.

And I read Cass City is a well balanced community with a strong industrial base and a viable business district, a good school system and many recreational facilities.

It is a prime area for the deer and bird hunter. Wild turkeys, pheasants, and partridge are plentiful.

And you are talking about going over to another team to get your bird???

Cass,

You are not a very good team captain, leaving us to the wolves. We need that bird to get the lead, and we need Blittles to hold the lead.:coolgleam

So hopefully you get one this morning.

Hawk - it is the best way to cook it. I use a stick of butter, (did not say it was low fat) 2 packages of Good Seasons Italian Dressing (the packets that you use to make the dressing sold in the salad dressing aisle) and about 4 tablespoons of lemon juice.

Cut into strips and take off as much membrane as you can to keep it from being chewy. Dip the pieces in the mixture once you have melted the butter and stirred it up, and put is on the grill on a low flame. The butter will drip and cause the grill to flame up, which is what you want. Keep turning the pieces over and move them around and once they feel firm, set them aside on low heat. Brush the left over mixture onto them and do not over cook. It is an easy and wonderful recipe from my grandmother.

Cass,

Well now I see why you got demoted to ass. captain, you would rather work than hunt. I know what you mean with gas being 4 dollars a gallon I might have to take up a new hobby besides hunting and trapping.

Koz,

Sounds good. I think they would be good like that then turn the grill off and melt some mozzarella cheese on them. :corkysm55

Hawk,

What did she do wrong? Just kidding buddy.

My girlfriend will be joining me in to woods next spring too.

Good luck Cass
