I'll be hunting the guaranteed hunt 234 early in the season in the barry, eaton, calhoun county area and if that doesn't work out I am going to finish the season up hunting livingston and montmorency counties. I have a lot of time set aside and am really looking forward to it. I am debating about taking out my bow, but I haven't decided yet.
i'll be hunting mainly in barry and eaton, maybe kent, i have hunt 301 for unit ZZ. i'll be usin my shotgun and bow, prolly bow first:)
so can we just be awarded that championship now?
I will also be hunting the 234 hunt. I have a camp up in Arenac Co. This year my daughter and grandson will be hunting with me part of the time. I'm retired so will be spending allot of time in the woods. We usually have quite a few birds around. Knock on wood! I'll be going up in the next week or so to check them out. Had 3 hens at my bird feeder last weekend. Good luck guys. I'll be cuttin and hopin to see some struttin........Jim (Jag)

What kind of equipment is everyone using this year?
Im using - Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag 3.5"
Primos Freak turkey call
Jackpot with Slate turkey call
Many mouth calls in my bag
Pretty Boy and Girl decoy set
Many other decoys at camp to choose from also
And a lot of land!!! Both private and public
i still can't decide which i wanna use! either my winchester 1300 w/ undertaker and rem nitro 3" #6, or my FB TRX 300.. i've tooken turkeys with both setups...... the bow was deffinetly a HUGE rush when i took one with that, but it limited where i could setup at.... or i can use my ol mans OLD 12 gauge... that guns brings back alotta memorys. it's a peerless ejector, one of the first shotguns that ejected, throws a decent pattern, the ol mans killed birds with it... so many decisions, so little time!
i'm stickin with my trusty hen, the 10 dekes that gander has. many many birds have fell to her;) haha. i might get a jake deke and put an old fan on it....
i'll be mainly using my custom slate call made by dan williams?? idk, i'll check the name again. it sounds GREAT i've called in alotta birds with that one... i have 2 diff. custom strikers for it, a soft maple- i absolutley love this one for soft tree yelps and calling to a hung up bird softly..great for closing the distance, or to sound like two different hens. the walnut is great for reaching out and giving louder, raspier sounds. i love it! both of them have there time and place. but i've found if i can setup within 150-100 yards of my tom and give a few soft tree yelps then sit tight and don't make another sound he'll be comin in...
i have a lot of mouth calls, don't like em much really, i mainly use them for yotes.
a lynch's foolproof box call is my main box call,
i just got a primos wetbox, it was given to me, NIB. so i couldn't turn it down. anyone have any experience with this one?? it sounds ok, but it'll be a back up prolly.
and a bunch of other calls i don't really use.....
i'm also taking 5-6 of my friends out this year to try and get them there first bird, show them the ropes of turkey hunting.
BRING ON THE 21ST!!!!
I'll be using a Remington 11-87 with a Jelly Head choke tube (Primos). #6, 3", 2oz Hevi-Shot. I make my own box and slate calls but also use Primos True Double and Deadly Double diaphragm calls. These have 2 frames stacked together. Fantastic sound quality. I use decoys most of the time but not always. I've found that some tom's will hang up as soon as they see the decoy from a long distance so I like to use them in a setup that when the bird sees the decoy he is close to gun range. I setup with an adult full strut tom and 2 or 3 hens. I have been lucky enough to take a couple long beards with a bow. After trying to just sit and shoot one from the ground,no luck, I set up my Lucky Blind. That was the ticket. I've hunted the 234 hunt the last few years and have better luck at midday or later. I still go out in the morning but in the last 3 years all of my birds have come after 10:00am. I'm going up to camp this weekend to check things out. I usually don't see many birds until the hens start to spread out but did have 3 hens at my wife's bird feeder last time up. Good luck Team 7. Let's try to kick some butt....Jim(Jag)

This is the equipment I'll be using for the hunt.
Bowtech Allegiance with Carbon Express Maxima 250 arrows
M.A.D. calls
Delta Decoys
Realtree APG HD Camo
Double Bull Matrix Blind
I'll be hunting private ground in 5 different counties and I'll be done with school by the time season starts so I'll have plenty of time to spend in the woods. I am going to start the hunt with my bow and then if that doesn't seem like it is going to pan out I am going to switch to using the good old Remington 870 12 ga express and see if I can't knock one down with that.
Fish, have you heard from caznic or elvis yet?

Maybe someone should send them a PM???? Im not sure if they even know what team they are on because in the main post for this contest they just said to "throw me on any team, id like to play." So im thinking they may not know what team they are even on.
I just sent PM,s to both caznik and elvis. I also asked them to let us know if they wanted to join this elite turkey assasination squad. Hopefully we will hear from them soon. Jim (Jag)

This sounds like a pretty spirited team so I guess we should expect 6 toms with double 12" beards and 2" spurs. I would however take one with a single beard.:D

only if i get the first shot! haha... keep stockin that birdfeeder!
no, opening day.... so what's you opening day strategy lookin like??
i'm still haven't decided which property to hunt.... i just gained permission to 3 new props that i deerhunted on or adjacent to..... and i still have the "old faithfuls" i think i'm gonna go back to my normal OD spot, it's a lime & gypsum pit at the front, horse pasture along one whole side, a huge swamp along the other side with roost trees right on the property line, with an overgrown apple orchard in the middle, slow rolling hills, then a mature hardwoods at the end, the property line is 20 yards into the woods, with a STEEP ditch, 20-30 feet sides with a little water in the stream, i've called 3 toms over that ditch on opening mornings...into my sights, so i know i can pull them over that ditch, at first light.. what're you guys&gal doin for od?? let's see some feathers flyin!!! and is any of you guys any good at computer stuff?? can someone make a BA sign for our team??? i'm just thinkin, it's the right thing to do, seein as were gonna be the champs:p

As far as opening day goes for me it will be some hardcore scouting, unless i get lucky. I will still be in school, with graduation on the 3rd, then off to the cabin for a week of hard hunting. My dad will be at the cabin before that so im hoping he can pinpoint a few gobblers for my buddy and i before we get there. He is lookin at trying a few more areas this year also so we will see how that goes. If all else fails, its back to the dairy farm i have permission to hunt. TONS of acres of green fields with a mix of pines and hardwoods seperating the fields. This area produces birds, not always giants, but birds none the less. Anyones hunt starting REAL soon?? Also, does anyone know what the snow condition is around the kalkaska/gaylord area?

Elvis Checking in
well, how'd ya all do?? i passed up 3 jakes and had a tom hangup about 50 yards out.
I'm having a meltdown waiting for May 5th. I was up at my place last week and saw some sign but didn't see a bird. I did have a tom sounding off back by my food plot 3 evenings in a row. He sure was quiet in the morning though. Every year that I see lots of pre-season birds I have a tough time. The years where they seem scarce, I usually score in the first day or two........Jag (Jim). Good luck guys, let's try to kick some booty

Well here is my story on my bird,
I am a 3rd shifter so during the weekdays I cannot get up early to go out hunting. But after I get out of work at 7:30am I can race over to where I hunt and get to my spot and hope to get one before the weekend gets here. Well today I raced over to the woods and when I got to my spot I seen 2 hens right where I would normally sit at. So I ended up sitting there anyways just because during bow season seems like I allways see turkeys there around 9:30am everytime. I started doing my calling by doing alot of purring and clucking like there was a big turkey party going on and doing it very lound. Then about 15 minutes later, one gobbled. I did a few more calls and then seen it about 60 yards coming in like it really wanted to see who was at the big turkey party. When it got to me about 40 yards I let him have it and droped it right in his tracks. Let me tell you something about that 12ga. That Remington 870 12 ga is just more deadly than my 10 ga. is and seems like I can shoot alot furthur to. My 12 ga. I use #5 3" shot and I do very well with it. My 10ga. is that Reminton Sp-10 auto that shoots 3 1/2" shells, witch i do very good to.
Well good luck to all of you guys and hope you will enjoy hunting this season.
Caznik
Way to go Caz, looks like C&S is off to a good start. Congratulations on a nice bird......Jag (Jim)

Well so far everyone in my party scored but me. My daughter took a jake and my grandson took a tom with a six inch beard. No pics available yet. I still have until the end of the month so I'm not out of it yet. Now that the kids are done I hopefully can get back to huntin. We saw quite a few birds but they all had lock jaw. I saw 3 different coyotes during our hunt. I think that is the reason for the silence. In 5 days of hunting we had one morning and one evening were we heard a gobble or two. I have 2 bird feeders just out my back door with a trail cam nearby. While we were hunting the second morning 2 BIG toms came in to sample some of my sunflower seeds. They both had at least 10" beards and 1" spurs. I know they are still around. If I don't get a bird this season it still has been a success because my daughter and grandson both took their first birds. That doesn't do much for our score sheet though does it?.......Jag(Jim)
