Went looking a few places this morning, not a perch bite to be had. Checked kitchen rd., hoyles. Kawkawling river is as bad as sag., flowing pretty heavy, when water reside, they'll be there. Will be hitting Q-cee river in morning.

Tried the Q-cee river this morning, nothing at the big bridge(river), a few caught at small bridge(cut). Not alot. Saw a few (only 4 ) that were caught near boat launch that were kept, that was it.

Guys , I wish I didn't have to bring it up again, but just looking for some honest feedback, it's ice out got agood rain, do you think there is a surplus of big perch for commercial fisherman to be setting nets for spawning jumbows? For whatever reason [not to blame it entirely on netting] perch fishing is not what it was on sag. bay.

Yeah I agree those worthless things are everywhere now. An extermination season would be great for all of the Great Lakes fish.

The perch may never be like it was, but from what I understand, when the perch was booming back 10 to 20 years ago, the walleye wasn't close to what it is now. Guess you have to use the resource available, and always remember, things always change with everything in life. Heck now you can catch lakers like nothing from shore and through the ice, who would have thought that would happen 10 years ago.

the cuts I stopped at today had shiners from shore to shore top to bottom, I have never seen anything like it. I bet you'd of killed a million minnows if you'd of dropped a rock of them. The perch I caught were all 9-11 inches long and fat, not just egg laden fat, but healthu chunky fish. I think the perch fishing is going to get better before it gets any worse. Just my .02

The shiner explosion we've had the last few years, deffinately is helping things.:)

MuskyDan, how many 9-11 inchers did you and others catch and how many hours were invested?

I caught 25 in 15 minutes! the rest of the day was slow. Everyone caught fish in the am early but then they shut down. I am not disagreeing that it isn't what it use to be, I just think it is on a rebound!

I hope sportsman have a couple good days while they're concentrated for the spawn but this is also when the netters take the majority of their harvest often blocking spawning grounds and migration routes, straining out the largest spawners. The catch rate overall for sportsman is very low overall compared to past, yes people are catching afew nice ones from time to time. They moved nets into the inner bay last fall off linwood, sparkplug and towards sag river mouth, my guess is because they thinned em out in their regular fishing grounds and are moving to greener pasture. The point I'm trying to make is this is a natural resource from public water and the jumbows netted would be of more value to more people if left for sportsman. Day in and out thru the season perch fishing is not as productive as the past and many local businesses are suffering, there just isn't a surplus for the netters to take away and drive the catch rate even lower and I just don't get how any sportfisherman could support this activity that benefits so few at the expence of many, maybe we should let market hunters shoot deer on state land or due even more clear cuts more often, where is the line to be drawn as to how much of a natural resource we should allow to be taken from us for proffits? PS. I due wish fellow fisherman good luck and good times this spring.

fisheyejack,
You have beat this netting topic to death in the past. Please give it a rest. The responses are always the same. Just go back and look at your old posts.
These "netting" threads always seem to result in closure.:(

Why is it you always try to degrade my postings and speak out as if you support comm netting. I mean to keep this friendly, informative and interactive you don't need to respond in a personnal attack manner when I'm speaking to fight for sportsmans rights, who's rights are you fighting for, you shouldn't be allowed to try and make this personnal above informative. I know in the past I got a little revved up and I don't want it to go that way again, stop making ref. to the past and attempting to derail my desire to speak up for sportsmans rights.

Did good at palmer rd., got 11 lbs. of smelt from commercial netters (beardsley's) for $3.00 per lb. cleaned and flash frozen.:D:p
Poor guys only got a 5 gallone pail of perch in 8 nets. I was there to see them bring em in. Had to buy something from him.
Was a few perch caught in cut, but keepers were few and far between. The comm. guys said they had all kinds of hog walleye still in the bay that were in their nets that they had to release. If I could get a boat out, I'd be out there getting some of those eyes and maybe a few perch too.;)

Ralph, I know you see it first hand, if the perch are so few for the man hours spent to catch ''a few'' them darn nets out there harvesting the spawners is doing nothing but driving the numbers lower, maybe when they move into the few remaining strongholds and wipe em out of the inner bay some of you willwake up........To keep it on the level, I have spoke with a couple good fishing crews out today the total perch kept today is 24, that avg is about 4 per person for 4 hours spent, that does not include ralphs crew, overall report lots of people few fish, hoping for a better sport report cause the nets are set and they strain the big ones out.

I know where a good amount was caught this morning, but was no more room at daylight for me, I was a little late. I only caught 1 keeper that was 9". There is alot of big ones around, just have to hit them right time. They don't come in area like they used to, mainly due to water levels over the years that have dropped. There is deffinately fewer than once was, but more than enough for those willing to work a little for them. I put in 40 hours of fishing for almost nothing, but I know where they'll be a some point, and I will be there.;)

Tried saturday morning at the first spot for about a half hour with nothing. Moved to the next spot and caught nothing, saw a ton of minnows. Moved to the next spot and kept 150 (from 10:45 until dark) Probably kept about 1 out of 3 perch. Kept them 7 - 10" most of them toward the 7" size. Never made it to Quanicassee accept to stop and get the perch scaled. Kids had fun and stayed busy the whole day. Picked up 10 dozen minnows and had to make a minnow run in the afternoon. Time to be more picky, sick of cleaning perch.

As long as the walleyes are out there the perch will remain in deeper water. As soon as the walleyes come in the river the perch will come in closer. Seen it for a few years on last ice and just after. Good luck to all.:)
