I'm looking for a new spinning reel for a new 6'6" MF G. Loomis. The 2 Stradics I have are great reels but it's time to explore other options so I'm looking for some opinions on the Quantum products, specifically the Energy series. On paper it looks to be the reel I'm wanting, but not sure I can get past that butt ugly paint job. Any input on other reels in this price range would be appreciated.

The previous models of PT Energy had issues with the anti reverse not working all the time. Actually not just the Energy but Kinetic also. Just had my anti fail on the Kinetic tonight while steelhead fishing. Had to have both fixed last year. So if they changed it, may be worth looking at. If not I would be looking at something else. Quantum service has been great through the whole thing except for the fact it keeps happening. I will be looking at the Stradic.

When it comes to spinning reels, there is only one for me and that is a Pflueger. I have used all the rest and I feel they give the best performance and durability for the price.
Shimanos are nice. I have read some that if they get wet, they can bind up on you. Something about the use of a plastic bushing instead of a metal one? Somehow it swells when wet? That is why some people refer to them as shimbindo's...That is usually saved for the river guys that will dunk their equipment sometimes.
I can say that I have river fished with a Pflueger, dunked it, and never had any problems. I of course cleaned it and re-oiled when I got home.
I think the Quantums are too heavy. Don't know about reliability.
Good Luck!

Shimanos are the only reel for me. I do quite a bit of shore fishing and have dunked my Shimano Sadonas and Saharas and never had a issue. I don't like pfleugers because they are so big and heavy. Quantums are alittle heavy too. You said you love your Stradics? I say if it aint broke, don't fix it.:D

When looking at the 35 series and down, I really don't know which high end Pflueger is "big and heavy"...

I just purchased 2 quantum KVD series in a 25 and 35. Have yet to use them but they seem to be a great reel. Have tested the drag alot and seem to be smooth as silk. Of course that is only human testing, and not with a fish on the other end. Got them at bass pro for 79.99. Take a look at them!

Well, let's take a look at a couple.
Pflueger Trion (Big Heavy :D) The President weighs the same also.
Model
4735GX 145yds/8lb line 11.2oz
Shimano Sedona
Model
SE2500FB 140yds/8lb line 9.8oz
I also prefer the shorter reel arm. The Shimano spinning reels feel like a baitcaster when cranking. Now this is just my preference. I like light weight work horses.

Love my Shimanos. Reliable, smooth, priced right.
Kinda like anything else-if they take care of you for years, why look elsewhere.

I have had terrible luck with both my Sedona and Sahara... I've put 3 of those damn plastic bail arms on each one of them. I"m not sure why this happens but both of those reels have had that issue since day one. Sold the Sahara at Steins swap meet this winter.
I have a Quantum Catylist and love it. Might be a little heavier than the shimanos but I've had 0 issues with it for two seasons now. And my President clone Gander reels have also been flawless. I just can't say that about the Shimanos I've had.
That said... the upper Shimanos don't have the same issues... the bail arms are different. I wouldn't hesitate to buy anything from the new Saros up in their line. They are lighter than the Quantums for sure...

Since you took the time, I guess I will do likewise. It would only be fair....
Pflueger Supreme9030 7.4 ozs. 6/160 (lb./yds)
Pflueger Supreme9035 8.8 ozs. 8/200
$130
Shimbindo (:D)
Saros 2500 9.9 ozs. 8/140
Saros 3000 10.1 ozs. 10/140
$130
Shimbindo (:D)
Stradic 2500 9.0 ozs. 8/140
Stradic 3000 9.2 ozs. 8/170
$230
He did say upper end spinning reels...
And the Trion in a 4730 is only 9.0 ozs. I own one, I have had it for 8 years now, I spray it with WD-40 once a year and have never done a thing to it. It is the only spinning reel I use (consistantly). I use baitcasters 95% of the time.
Nothing wrong with Shimano reels. Very smooth. I just prefer Pfluegers.

Those are out of my league. I use spinning reels that are $60 and less, so I compare reels that are $60 and less. I guess if one is willing to pay over $130 for a spinning reel then that is different. I just know the Quantums and Pflugers that I've have used and owned were to heavy for my liking. To each their own. And you are correct, he was talking upper end.

SmartAZZ. It was a Bday prez from the wife, but who am I to complain. It's too nice a rod for a 7 year old Stradic, so I'll buy a new reel, then tell her I need a new rod for the old reel and see what happens:lol:

Like you, I would never spend that much. Like I said, I use a Trion ($40).
To me, that is money wasted that I could use on a good baitcaster.

Thanks Ray. The Anti reverse would be an issue. How have the drags held up? Will be used on the ocasional bonefish so a good drag system is a must. Thanks to everyone for thier input.

I think Quantum's drag system is one of the best on the market. It is why I have been putting up with anti-reverse issue. They are a heavy reel like some have commented though.

As a Die hard QUANTUM Guy of course i will say get a Quantum,
BUT I am a fan of the older Energy series spinning reel's,
I like the smoothness, the wormgear osculation, and the fact that they have a gear ratio of 5.8-1 not the 5.1-1 of the newer reels.
I have heard a few comments of how the PT's anti reverse failing??, I have never had a problem, But i have older Quantums,
I would suspect that you cold weather guys are not drying out your gear after an outing, water gets in there and either freezes or is displacing the lubricant!
Now just because Quantum say's perminant lubrication dont mean you dont have to do maintaince. I relube my reels preiodically, ya the baitcasters too, like every few outings or so, but not because they need it, but because I love these reel's and will not have them wear out because im too lazy to do what need's to be done!
As far as SHIMANO goes, well ya if your willing to pay for the TOP of the line you will have a quality reel, but bypass their lower end reel's, trust me you will be sorry. Good luck let us know what you end up with!

I will gaurantee this is a VERY ISOLATED issue... and would suspect that it was probably NOT Quantum's issue but rather the retailer where he bought it. People constantly take reels out of the boxes at most retailers... and who knows what THAT person did to it.
I have a couple Quantum spinning reels... LOVE the titanium bail wires and the line roller compared to the Shimano's I own.

Well fixed the ant-reverse on my Kinetic. Not sure how but cleaned a few things that I thought may control the ant-reverse though they really didn't look like they needed it. Cant quite figure out how the anti-reverse works on these Quantum's. Must be like DLP, its the mirrors.:lol: Went to buy another reel today and what do I buy? A Quantum. :help:
Oh and Dicks has Diawa Capricorns 50% off.

Ray, which Quantum did you pick up? Stopped by Dicks At 8 Mile/Haggerty and found they had little to choose from. Guess I'll be headed for Cabela's tomorrow.
WHB, have you checked out the Van Stahl's? Almost $700 a pop. Not sure who buys that kind of stuff, but it better come with a transferable life time warranty!

Quantum Escalade. Have never seen one until Dicks. Looked on Quantum's website but it doesn't show. Must be a Dicks exclusive. Looks like it is the Incyte but in different packaging and $10.00 more because of packaging for Dicks. Wont break the bank account at $69.00 either. The Incyte appears to be going for $59.00. Have to break it in on some steelhead this week and see how it does. ;)

These are the only kind of reels that I own. With that being said I had a Symtre that would bind up when it got wet, but I dropped that in the lake last summer. I now have 2 Sedonas and fished in the rain and snow on Thurs. and they did not bind up.
Just my 2 cents.

I use Shimano stradic for Pike, Muskie, down south for Catfish and had my cousin go to FL. He was using a Stradic 5000 for 40# Cobia and 80# Grouper. That seals the deal for me. Good luck with your dilema.
