i think a lot of people give bass a bad name cuz they are used to catching left and right out of a farm pond.. or lake erie:lol:

put a bass guy on a tough walleye bite and he will likely fail, put a walleye guy on a tough bass bite.. he will likely fail too. I think the only thing that puts a bass guy on top is no live bait.

Walleye are usually tougher to pattern. Walleye guys have to be more rounded.
Let me rephrase that, mid summer walleye are just plain picky little sissies that are darned near impossible to pattern. I love it when I hear on the squawk box that the hot bite is on a little pink headed jig dressed in a tu-tu with an emerald tiara... I just don't have any on board for some reason. May as well go play with the bass and remind myself that ignorance is bliss....

I have fished with some of the best walleye fisherman in the state, between the two of them they have won 3 boats on the PWT tour. every time I have fished with them I kicked there butts jigging on the sag, and detroit river. as far as being versitile how many walleye fisherman have rods strung with 6lb to 65lb line, rods that range from 6' light to 8' extra heavy. and in one day fish from 12" of water to 30'. Walley are tough to catch? Try freemont or hardy they seem as easy to catch as the pike just toss a jerk bait.

So, heading down for some steelies right now. Then hitting the Maumee next week for eyes... and while we're down there we're going to hit a trout stream too. As soon as the ice is gone it's PIKE SEASON!!!! Carp in the summer are a blast!!!

It all depends on the skill level of the fisherman. Obviously KVD is more skilled than almost any walleye fisherman on this site. While at the same time Mark Martin is probably more skilled than most bass fisherman here. Bass fishermen catch walleye when targeting bass, and walleye fishermen catch bass when targeting walleye. Both are great anglers. And now that bas fisherman are learning to fish deep water (dragging the river, drop-shotting and jigging) they're becoming much more rounded. I'm biased and will say bass fishermen, becasue we have to deal with so much $h!t in our little bass boats while walleye fishermen ride around in their Cadillacs:lol:.

The best fisherman is some that can not only cast, jig, but fish in many situations and conditions and gues what trolling is one of those as well as live bait. A guy that can do all those techniques well will be able to switch species very easily just by adjusting to that particular species habits and prey base. So of the two I think that the walleye angler would win out. I am sure that certian walleye situations would be better geared towards a bass angler like casting cranks and vise versa but day in a day out walleye fisherman catch way more bass as bycatch than the other way around. Around here you have to often sort through 10 lousy bass to get a walleye....

The point is the more you fish and the more species and techniques you fish the better you will be. As an avid steelhead / salmon (both lake, river, pier, using bait, fly/spey, cranks, spoons) , walleye, panfish, whitefish, trout, saltwater (when I can) and even on occasion ice fishing. Each technique and species has their niche but understanding one helps you understand them all.

Maybe the fact that bass fisherman are so much better in their presentations and techniques, we don't have the incidental catches that walleye guys do. To me that says if I put a minnow on a jig, I can catch anything (walleye, perch, bass, etc...). Bass guys are so refined that we only catch our targeted species.

In all reality there is absolutely no way of answering or speculating on this. It all depends on that anglers background. And here I thought the larger tournament payouts were due to the fact that bass have a much larger geographical distribution. Therefore bass are available to more anglers, so there are naturally more sponsors willing to spend bigger bucks to reach a larger target audience.

Well, let's see, when I was fishin' Bass TX's, the best fishermen were the bass guys.

Now that I chase Wally's it's gotta be the walleye guys.

To be honest, to be consistantly good, both need a lot of fish knowlege and be adept at many different presentations. Anybody can chuck a spinnerbait at bassy lookin' cover and catch bass most times and anyone can wash nightcrawlers behind a boat and catch a few walleye. It's when the goin' gets tough that the true fishermen shine.

All that said, I think the walleye fisherman to be a successful TX fisherman has to learn one of the hardest presentations there is "precision trolling" go out and try to work an weedline or even rocky points pulling the lures 50'+ behind the boat and put 'em on the spot at the right depth. Granted I could never learn to pitch a jig under a dock (always skipped 'em) and I can catch more weeds than fish when I'm trollin' that weed edge. But I could get the lure under the dock more often than I can hit the "spot" draggin' it behind the boat. Precise live bait presentations can be the toughest (ya can't texas rig a real night crawler). So from the presentation stand point I'd say the walleye guy has to be a little better. :yikes:

Well you cant texas rig a crankbait either. You also catch a lot grass throwing rat l traps, Crankbaits, Jerkbaits etc.. And for trolling you have a fish finder to show you were everything is and that does not show anything when you are throwing a lure off the side of the boat or in front of it. And for walleye there is probably half the amount of presentations as there are
for bass. Harnesses, rapalas, jigs, blade baits. Compared to texas rig, carolina rig, drop shoting, wacky worm and thats only the soft plastics
you cant forget the top water or hard bait or spinner bait presentions also.
So no offense to walleye guys but bass guys i am not saying are better just have to know more presentations and when to use them which makes them better.

Don't know about you but when I bass fish I have a sonar unit runnin' front off the trollin' motor and one runnin' in the back of the boat for correct boat positioning, usually know what I'm fishin' because I can see it or have previously checked it out with a sonar unit. I can pick the correct lure for fishin' that type of structure so's I don't haul in a bunch of weeds.

Was just sayin' that it's much easier to cast, pitch, or flip a lures to a specific spot than drag it there (this doesn't even consider the vertical problems with suspended fish as we know a few inches outta the zone and your not gonna get bit, wallys or bass). Walleye guys use a lot more presentations than most think, here on the Great Lakes we usually associate dragging lures over lake basins as the only way to fish walleye this doesn't mean it's the only way, most of the techniques you mention for bass are also used in some shape or form for takin' Mr. Walleye. :) So unless I'm bass fishin' that day I'd have to vote for the walleye guy. ;)
