Bow hunting a few weeks ago i bagged my deer and luck was on my side. My mechanical broadhead never opened and I still got my deer. I was using satelites. The poundage I shoot should have been adequate for the broadhead to open and in the past they have worked well. I checked my broadhead prior to hunting to ensure it would function properly. Anyone else having trouble with mechanical broadheads? Born

Born, Same thing happened to my son acouple years ago. He was using Spitfires, shot his deer at 12yds w/ a well tuned bow set at 55#'s draw. The deer went about 25 yds and piled up, a lethal liver shot. He couldn't find the arrow (probably because it was mine and he didn't have to pay for it, kids!) but said he noticed that the hole was extremely small. I found the arrow the following spring turkey hunting and the head was completely closed. I mentioned this on another board at the time and someone said that blade closes after it passes thru but, I find that incredibly hard to beleive. I've used Rocket's in the past w/ no problems, but I guess you never know. That's why I like my 2 blade Nuge blades I know they're open and they're lethal. I'll only use the mech's now on a real windy day and only Rocket Steelheads.

Yes, spitfires can close up after exit. i just bought a pack this wknd and it says so right on the package. i shot a 6pt with them this wknd and lost it. 67#, 7yd shot. i think i may have hit a little to far back though since i have never taken a quartering toward shot on a deer, so i will give the blades another shot. if it happens again, then i will go back to the old standard broadheads...i ahte losing deer!! i lost 2 deer this wknd....one is running around out there with a Chevrolet symbol on it's side. Sorry for the post in the ladies section, but i thought it was worth noting.

WEll Not to be a jerk or anything but I think mechanical broadheads are junk for lady shooters! When you shoot a mechanical you almost havta get a full pass through shot to have ample blood for trailing! When you shoot mech. heads you loose penetration. I know that my mother only gets about 14-15 inches of penetration out of her arrows on deer with traditional heads....
Not saying that all women are shooting low draw weights but I think the majority are under 50lbs! Most men are shooting 60-65, Myself(60lbs), but I guess it's all about who ate their vegetables when they were young, I guess :)

I have taken deer with mech broadheads in the past. I shoot a 60 lb. bow, and with these heads, I lost the ability to make a pass through shot.
WEEZER is right about the blood trailing. If the arrow does not exit, it makes for a harder blood trail.
I didn't like the loss of penetration. The more of an angle that the deer stood at, the more energy I lost (from one blade catching before the other).
I went back to my old Muzzys. I'm back to passing through.

Thanks for the info guys. Wheezer I ate my wheaties as a kid :) and shoot well over the 50 pound mark. I will agree with you tho I do believe mech broadheads work better for higher poundages. Born
