Now that rifle season is just around the corner once again you get to see and hear all the things hunters do and say. Some good some bad. My question this week is where did a hunters ethics go?

Yeah Born, I'd sure like to know too. I bowhunt and firearms hunt, but hearing all the "tuning up" going on all weekend (and I'm sure it will continue all week), makes me wonder. Every year my neighbor "tunes up" the night before. I also believe that there are a lot of people who have been gunhunting already. Those mysterious late afternoon shots suuuuuure do make me wonder. But when you have the resources to afford large tracts of property (ie, hunting clubs) I suppose those things are gonna happen. Oddly enough, I always hear the reason that people do this is...."well, they have lived/hunted here forever so you got to let them do what they want." I think that is a lot of BS. Other excuses is "they are old so let them get their deer."

Another good one, all the "Bambos" out there who only hunt for horns and use night vision devices and tresspass just to get that huge buck. Yep, they are the ones out there shining to find those big boys. If it lives on your property kiss it goodbye because they WILL do anything to get that deer.

I find all the excuses irritating.

Do it right or don't do it at all.

So very true Redtoads. Rifle season has become such a joke where I live, it's just an excuse for a big drunk. I'm pretty lucky tho the camp I hunt at takes their hunting pretty serious. I'm glad I can't get much time off for rifle season. I got all the time off for muzzle loader by then the yahoos will all be gone :).

Good luck in your hunt, Born.

Born,
You have some good questions. This ones another.
I wish all hunters would ask them selfs this same kind of question. "What are hunting ethics? I know that most can answer this.
I think that with todays life style that some don't get to spend a lot of time in the woods. They haven't been exposed to the life style of need. When a sorce becomes a necessity you learn to appreciate it.
When you appreciate it, you care for it, and do what you can to insure that the source remains available.
Today hunting for food is'nt a necessity for most. Its more fun that a sorce of food. And the joke about "Your socks were in your gun case dear" becomes more and more truthfull.
Hunt camp can be a great time, but when the answer to the question "what are hunting ethics" becomes "PARTY TIME" Thats when it all goes down hill.
Well for those who understand what I'm trying to say, Thank-you for being the ethical hunter that you are. For those that don't understand, I only hope that in time you will.
Have a good one.

Very true oct 1 So many people dont get to spend the quality time in the great outdoors I was raised in mid Michigan i moved to Florida ten years ago. But i have very fond memories of being "Up North" my father still lives there to this day . I have him to thank for that, for he taught me the respect and the ethics to enjoy the outdoors . Most kids nowadays dont even have a "clue" Someday i will be back there, But for now i can only cherish the memories!!! Good Luck ! :)

Nightstalker, and everyone that can.
Start planning a Vacation with your folks now.
I understand the work force very very well, and how it can keep you from the things you love most. I spent 35 yrs. doing that same thing. Still doing it too.
My dad is gone now and I wish every day I had more time doing things with him. Even if it was putting a new roof on the house. I had a special relationship with my dad. Hunting, Fishing, working on the house we were building, you name it. We even shaved our heads bald one year just for fun. When Uncle Sam said greetings it all changed. It became all my time was for my personal family and work. But I know my folks understood.
I was raised in Manistique in Michigan's U.P. and have asked my boys with their familys to take one 4 day weekend every other year and go back up. Its wonderfull to show my Grandchildren where their Great Great grand parents lived. We fish the same lake I did, explore the same section of woods my grandfather and I did. Its great that it hasen't become condo city.
Take time to plan something with your folks, up here, or down there, many people have said this and now I find myself saying it also "life on this earth is really short."
God Bless and take care
