Do any of you use your units for area calculation, i.e., determining the square yardage or acreage of a paced off area?
Are you satisfied with that function on your particular model?

Use it all the time on my Garmins (GPSMap 76Csx and 60Cx). Very accurate.....a "hidden feature" most are unaware of. I use it mainly to determine acreage for lumber/timber, but do large lots in the city and bigger properties.
I walked the fenceline of my 120 acres near Baldwin last summer and got 119.94 acres......but my fence is 6-8 inches inside the property line.

lowrance global nav 2:D
Garmin GPSMAP 60csx, it has been great. I flag spots on the Garmin then load it into Google Live earth for satelite topos with deer trails, rubs scrapes etc. for a different way to look at the hunting spots.

Yep I love my Garmin Map 60csx. Have had nothing but great luck with it. Plus I am able to lock 6-7 sats while in my basement, so there is no doubt that it will lock in even the heaviest cover in the wild!!!

:yeahthat:
BUT, remember those signals are being reflected/refracted numerous times (same with a lot of tree cover), and are, thus, less accurate (no matter what the accuracy reading on your unit).\

Then why would you have/be using your GPS in your basement?
As my wife would say............"Big boys, and their small toys."
Seriously....the newer, more sensitive receivers grab those signals from the side (reflected) with no reduction in strength, but an increase in error of location. Thus they may display a greater accuracy than is actually being achieved when obsticals (trees, buildings, basement walls) are affecting the signal.

I've been happy with my Etrex Legend for the past few years. Has always allowed me to return to the place I want to.
Never tried the area measurement and other functions you mention though.
IMHO a decent hand held for the money.

map and compass in areas unknown.
45 Colt Revolver and map ingrained into memory for familliar backcountry trips on horse back. ( you did ask what "handheld" unit I used) In the high mountains, it's not too hard to get around if you are familiar with the terrain.

Another vote for the Garmin 60csx! I really like mine!
Maps are expensive though....
