I'm not sure if we've had this discussion before or not, but I thought this might give all of us a little cure for cabin fever and prepare us for the upcoming open water season.
What stupid human tricks have you done on the water? I'll start.
Put the boat on plane with the kicker motor down.
Put the boat on plane with the bowmount down.
Put the boat on plane with a swim ladder down (never saw it again)
Was night fishing, put the boat down on plane and still had a rod and planer board out...nothing like trolling at 28 mph. And I thought I coudn't have any more confidence in ugly stik rods.
Was fishing a bass tournament next to several other boats and dropped my custom rod and calcutta overboard. I jumped in, retrieved it before it sank all the way, and fished the next six hours of the tourney soaking wet. That got me a nice round of applause at the weigh in.
A buddy dropped my brand new Beckman net overboard in 300 fow with a salmon in it.
Kept getting hits on a brand new Hildebrant stinger spinnerbait, couldn't hook any. I finally realized I had left the protective piece of plastic tubing they had installed at the factory on the hook. :dizzy::lol:

Ok Picture this three guys in 14 flat bttom on the muskegon river drifting down stream fishing. Then we realize we are heading right for a blown down tree. ok lets try and row away..not gonna happen so dad is in the back of the boat which is going down stream first he manages to not hit the tree thank god.... but my buddy and I are towards the front which swings over into the tree..he grabs a branch..boat still moving I grab another branch along with two rods in one hand....boat doesn't stop next thing I know i'm like a rock leaving sling shot going backwards off the front over the anchor neck and before I hit the water I see my buddy flying off the side from the force of me going off the front. I'm under water still gripping two rods my hat and trying to grab my sun glasses...lose the rods. dad sees the lines grabs them saves the rods...I get back into the boat..buddy get back into the boat....thank god it's middle of july so river is pretty low and it's warm out...tubers and canoers are laughing their butts off...as we drift down stream thinking we managed to get out of it with out losing any thing...go to grab the oars and realize one is gone!!!!!!:dizzy::lol:

How about waiting for the anchor to set only to see the end of the rope going over the side of the boat......... Awwww damn.......
And trying to get the boat off the trailer, then realizing you didn't remove the rear straps!

Not me man, I'm perfect....., well ok here's a good one. Salmon fishing off of Rogers City in '02, just landed a nice one. Resetting outside rigger when the #2 rigger in the center goes off. I have one rod in my left hand and go to hand off the rod in the rigger to my uncle that is now bucking pretty good. Well , I fumbled the hand-off and watched a Daiwa 47LC and 8' Ugly Stick go about 20' thru the air before it hits water.

I was fishing the wall at the Grosse Point Yacht Club. Tossing senkos against it and letting them fall to the bottom. Largies hang out there. Anyway, this guy is hosing off his boat and talking to us and I wasn't paying attention and tossed the senko right over the 8ft wall and onto his boat. Luckily he laughed about it....I was never so embarressed on the water...
He just picked up the senko and threw it over the wall.
I felt like such an a**...

Well lets see, how about the 2 piece rod I casted a few summers ago that I got to watch the rod separate and the 'upper half' go flying out into the lake (at about 2am mind you, so no chance in hell of finding it)...
Or, how about last summer, fishing tubes at 6th street, cast my Ugly Stik lite 2 pc rod...and get snagged up...Somehow, the 2 piece rod comes apart, and shortly thereafter, my line snaps, thus me donating yet another top part of a rod.
After that mishap, the other halves to my 2 worthless rods got snapped over my knee, and I decided to buy 1 piece St. Croixs....Funny, no problems anymore .
Although my 4 piece XML travel rod had a tendency to come apart too, until it just up and snapped out of the blue...still in the process of getting the motivation to send that in for a replacement lol.

I don't tell this story very often, and probably shouldn't tell it now, but......
A number of years ago I was Salmon fish'in off the bank. It was about 4am and I had'da go poop.
I found a suitable tree to lean against, pulled down my waders and dropped a stink pickle. The first sign of trouble was when I didn't hear it hit the ground.
I hit the headlamp and looked down just in time to see it break in half on the crotch of my waders with a chunk falling into each leg.
I wasn't very happy about that. My toilet paper was too wet to use and I ended up using my socks.
I have a pair of 5mil. neoprenes for sale if anybody needs some.............
Not sure where the socks ended up.

Tom how did I know your story was gonna be a poop story!
Anyway, When I was about 5 or 6 my grandfather and I were out fishing one fine summer day. We were not catching anything in the spot we were in so we decided to move. (I should tell you we were in a 12 ft flatbottom with a 3 horse sea king motor). So my Grandpa proceeds to start the motor up, only to get the pull cord rapped around either the steering arm, or the side of the boat, I can't remember, well we did a sudden 360. Doing so caused the starboard side of the stern to become sumerged! We quickly sunk, luckly we were in about 6' of water, my grandpa is 6'4" so he stood on the sunken boat while I climbed onto his shoulders (yes I was wearing my PFD thank God!) Good thing an older couple seen what happened came to our rescue with there pontoon. I did loose my tackle box and pole, along with what fish we did catch that morning. I still have that old Flat bottom, been in our family since 1954, and the sea king still runs, just needs a little work done too her...

Seen a guy a few years ago launching at belleville lake with his son. He backed down the ramp with his red cherried out classic mustang ,rag top down, music playing you know the kind.Gets the boat in the water gets out to unhook the boat and his son pops the emergency brake off! the car rolls back and by the time dad could get to the brake the car was filled up to the back seat.

After the first bass tournament I ever fished, Tamarak I think it was, I pulled the boat out and forgot to turn the outboard off...very embarrassing, luckily someone was paying attention and ran over to shut it off.
This is one I saw...a guy was pulling his boat out of Jordan last year and having some problems...finally he just mashed the gas and pulled it out, at quite a high rate of speed. The trailer hit one of the pot holes pretty hard...he never locked the trailer to the ball and of course this jarred the trailer off the ball and back into the water the trailer and boat went. I felt bad for the guy and had to do everthing in my power not to laugh...but it was quite a sight. Anyways, I always wondered what that thing at the end of the ramp was for, now I know...

I was Fishing in what's known out west as the American Bass CLUB CHALLENGE, or top 6 as we called it,
Any club could send their TOP 6 anglers to represent them at the tournament at LK HAVASU AZ. Up for grabs was a NEW 198 NITRO Bass boat.
I was fishing it for the 2nd time, and was my 4th time on the lake, My boater was wanting to fish up in the river backwaters, We did good I had caught several and was in the middle of switching up to the back seat, insted of waiting and moving thru the center of the boat, I decided to skirt around the drivers counsol, soon as I got around He got on the troller,
OMG there I was tetering on the edge, no chance im gonna be stayin the boat! deciding i was going to get wet, then the question was HOW BAD! So I decided I had to go in feet 1st and grab the boat on the way down, only managed to keep my head out of that ice cold water,BURRRRRRR, fortunately My boater has spare jacket, shoes and sweat pants, or I was done! OMG Id rather forget about that, they razzed me for 2 years after that!!! Did ya fall in, did ya fall in, did ya manage to stay in the boat, did ya!!!

This is one of those had to see it events.
I was fishing at the park with my nephew and G/Fs son. We were there for quite a while and not doing real well and my G/F joined us. I had just changed my bait and was gettting ready to cast again when I got my shoestring caught on a root. I stumbled, staggered and fought with all my might to keep form falling in. I succeeded in not falling (an extremely ungraceful fall at that) in but broke the tip of my rod. I turned to see them all staring at me and they asked what happened. I pointed to my shoe string and said what, you thought I was having a siezure??

I used to live on Big Bay on Lake Mac in Holland right across the bay from the big boat launch. On weekends I would take my lawn chair over to the launch and just sit there for several hours in a state of disbelief..............:dizzy:
The lack of common sense seemed to be directly related to the size of the boat...........bigger the boat= increased lack of common sense........:dizzy:
Glad I only had a 12 ft. boat at that time...........lmao

This was about 25-30 years ago my father was fishing on the opener of pike season. You know pretty cold water. Well he gets some line spun around the outboard and decides to lift it up and unwind it. He sits on the motor and gets to the task at hand when the motor drops and he does a nice head first dive in the water. Mind you there were a few other boats around. Not sure but probably an adult beverage had been consumed.

My buddy and i had planned on taking his 2 boys and our other buddies boy out on Erie to do some perch fishing. We could not all go in our little 16 foot so i borowed my buddies 21 foot and we went out from Sterling State Park it started out as nice day some fish in the box and teh wind started to pick up we were out just past the point and i decided that we should at least move inside the bay to try and get out of the wind as much as possable. It started to get preety ruff out 4 to 5 footers and we where starting to pack up to head in. My buddies oldest was looking a little green he had just ate a small bag of cheese popcorn well we were rocking around pretty good and that was it he was salivating bad and then it was on chunks all over the boat. I hollard for him to get it outside of the boat so he was hanging over the side of the boat letting it fly and then the seagulls came they were picking up the chunks and the orange flem off the water trying to fly away with it looked like the had orange strings hanging out of the beaks well after that my buddy was next inline with his head over the side of the boat feeding the gulls.

Thunderhead,Thanks for making me spit coffee on the computer monitor!!!:lol::lol: Several years ago we were fishing on LSC in my buddys 16 footer and the 25 horse Merc stalled out, while buddy #1 is pulling the recoil ,the rope snapped causing his fist with pull rope go right into buddy #2's nose, all I heard was CRACK , buddy #2 is knocked out cold and bleeding like a stuck pig. Eventually got towed in, took him to the emergency room to find out his nose was broke in 2 places. OUCH!!!! Al

I mentioned it on another thread last week but setting myself on fire with my heater pulling my sons 8 lb lake trout through the hole was near the top of the list.
Fishing in a hard south wind in the Detroit river anchored, pulling the anchor to leave, having the motor already running as a precaution, and the second I pulled the anchor getting blown up on Sugar Island in a blink before I could get back to the throttle and back out. I beached myself at 1am in the middle of the Detroit river.:dizzy::dizzy:

A couple "new boat owner" mistakes:
Launching without the drain plug at Belleville Lake...good thing I realized that one quickly!
Having my anchor take all my rope off the boat with it because I thought it was tied off and I wasn't paying attention.
I sent more than one spinnerbait sailing because I forgot to release the spool when casting
I sent the top half of my 2-piece rod sailing (thankfully still attached to my line)
I think that's about it for me. The best one from last year came from my father who took a spill while we were wading, filled his waders, and couldn't stand up. He had to scoot on his hands back to shore. Unfortunately, while trying to help him up, I managed to send my glasses to the bottom (got them back, though).
So yeah, I'm hoping that this season will be just as exciting. :D

:lol::lol:That's great.
I just bought a different boat this past summer. I'm used to an outboard, well the new to me boat is a straight inboard with a full keel underneath. Needless to say it requires a few more inches of water underneath than an OB. I launch it (by myself) take it out for a little spin, get back to the launch to find the handle to my winch GONE, lovely, thank God for vise grips. Start backing it down and find out that in order to get enough of my trailer underneath the boat, the boat has to be out past the dock. Really shapeing up to be a great day. So my boat starts to float down the river away from my trailer and I'm tugging like a madman to try and get it between the guide ons, in case your wondering, it's not that easy when the boats perpendicular to the trailer. I have to walk down the trailer to try and get the boat on by hand, lose my footing and have to travel very fast the rest of the way. Luckily, I somehow managed to stay on the trailer and not go in, although it was quite the site. After about 20 minutes I finally got the boat on the trailer and the many many people watching got a show and not a single one offered a hand. Now, I power load and launch from that ramp using two seperate docks, and I keep the new winch handle in the truck locked up.

One, which was shared on a previous thread "embarrassing moments on water" Bass fishing on Eagle lake (allegan) buddy is hammering me taking me to school. BAD. I switched to a crank bait desperate for any type of hook up at this point. Seen a fish jump a ways off, so I reach back for a mighty cast, let it rip. Crank bait takes flight right into the "eagle house" that is on the lake. My buddy is on the floor of the boat all tears just laughing his :lol:ss off. Meanwhile my crank is stuck in the eagle house, Im getting a sarcastic round of applause from the other 2-3 boats in the vincinity. As far as I know my crank is still in the eagle house.
Then many many moons ago, as a young lad. Fishing with my Gramps and cousin on Houghton lake (roscommon) I was out fishing both cousin and gramps, (TRUE) Gramps didn't mind, more fish for the freezer. My cousin on the other hand was pissed. I started putting "my" fish into "my" own fish cage. Which to my enjoyment pissed my cousin off even more.
Starting to get dark, gramps says haul in the fish. my cousin hauls in his and gramps fish cage, I untie mine, my cousin "bumps" me and I loose it. Sank faster than I could reach for the line. Gramps is pissed, "whole mess of fish" gone. My cousin blames me faster than a caught politician. I am in tears. Gramps tried dregging for the fish cage with no luck. My cousin forever ribbed me about it, when I mention how I out fished 'em both he would scream prove it. Needless to say I never went fishing with that cousin again. Gramps and I continued to has many successful and enjoyable outings after that.

I decided to go musky fishing last year. It was the first time ever fishing musky. The wife says "shouldn't you put heavier line on my pole?" My response was "we have never fished musky before chances are we will not catch anything it will be fine." So we hit the water and she has her pole in the water less than 5 minutes. Bam a very nice musky takes the bait and starts running. We get it close to the boat, I tell her "see that 8lb. line will be fine to get this fish." Just then it goes for another run and the line snaps. All she did was look at me and say thanks for changing the line! I don't think I will ever live that down.

My wife reminded me of one of the times I took her fishing to the seawall in Algonac before we boats. The setup for fishing in the current is a very large triangle sinker, with a stopper aboput 3' above, then a leader at the stopper with a bomer or rapala attached to it. Well I reared the rod back, gave ita good sling and watched as the whole setup went flying, then a good nest appeared in the Penn 209, >>SNAP<<, and watched the sinker and bomber continue to fly another 100' or so. Goodbye $10!

About 16 or 17 years ago, 2 of my buddies and I went to Lake Erie after eyes, and launched out of Sterling. We went out, caught 3 eyes, and the wind kicked up. BIG wind. In no time we had 8 footers rolling around out there. We were in a 16" Starcraft with a closed bow (thank god) and slowly made our way back in. After a harrowing ride (and spearing a wave or two), we made it to the channel. When we got to the launch, there were probably 100 boats in the lagoon waiting to pull out. Complete chaos. We made the decision to pull off to the side, drop anchor and wait it out. Since we had consumed some adult beverages, it seemed a nap was in order. Three hours later, we wake up, look around, and there is not a boat, truck, or person in sight. We also quickly realized that we were burned to a well-done crisp. Of course, we were all wearing our sunglasses:coolgleam, and looked like a bunch of deep fried raccoons. We went to the campground, pitched the tent, and tried to sleep that night. I was so burned that I layed in the tent all night shivering and praying to make the pain stop:yikes:.
I did not return to Lake Erie for almost 15 years after that trip.
