This has is one of the better missed muskie videos I have come across. I think if it would have been me missing that monster there would be at least one bleep on the video .

Nice vid, both were big fish. I haven't fished for musky and I don't understand why on that first fish he didn't pause his bait for a second. Instead he continued to let the fish get closer to the boat and spot him.

I agree. I think I would have done the figure 8 a couple more times at boatside to see if she would come back up.

You dont want to stop the bait when you have a muskie follow, 99% of the time they will lose interest and tail off. If anything you want to make the bait go faster ( like real life prey trying to escape).
The guy in the video is Bob Mehsikomer, what he should have done at the end of his retrieve is go into the eight but instead he just stoped the bait right at the boat which is most likely why the muskie tailed off.
Bob does not have much confidence in the figure eight manuever and he's not good at it (he admits it). A good video of what not to do.

Would the figure 8 work on pike as well? I have (intentionally) fished for pike a few times and they have never let me down by slapping the side of my boat a few times. Any knowledge is greatly appreciated!!

im sure it would work for pike also but i have never tried it. most of the time im trying not to catch the pike and not have them bite all my bass lures off and ruin some good bass fishing.:D

I have caught pike on the eight but I can count them on one hand. Pike don't seem to like to play the round n' round game like muskie.

Bloody 'ell. She probably chomped onto the lure, and never got hooked. They do that a lot.

These guys were fishing for muskies, but this brought to mind a theory: I think most musky and pike fishers get into it after losing a big one ... usually while fishing for bass or walleyes, or having one eat a panfish they're playing. That's certainly how I caught the Esox bug!

Makes sense. Better yet, make it fast and more erratic, like an injured fish trying to escape.
