HunterHads and I are just starting to think about the '08 contest and what changes we may make to it from last year. This years contest will most likely be very similar to last years, but with minor adjustments. One thing that we will be adding this year is a M-S.com vs. O-S.com sub-contest, the details of which have yet to be decided upon.
So basically we thought that we'd go ahead and open this thread as a place for you guys and gals to voice your opinions on last years contest and submit any ideas or suggestions that you may have for 2008. Obviously we aren't going to use everything, but feel free to say/post whatever your thoughts are as now will be the time/place to do it and not a couple months from now when the new rules/directions are posted.
Look forward to seeing what you all have to say.
Thanks,
theredmission

I think you should be able to enter 1 buck and up to 3 does per hunter using any weapon of choice. Maybe that will get hunters to take more does.;)

Purely selfishness on my part  I am a bowhunter first and foremost, The last 5 yrs. I have taken both my bucks with my bow and saved my doe permit for shotgun season just to be out, I`m not a big contest guy but as soon as I get in one as a bowhunter, the opportunity was just not there and on opening day of gun I got a buck and a doe but they did`nt count  You guy`s did an excellent job though, and if you dont change anything I would still get in next year. Thanks for what you did and thanks for looking to make it better. Mike

I think we should somehow make it a network-wide contest including OS.com, IS.com, and the new WisconsinOutdoorsman.com

theredmission were talking about that the other day and have some ideas in the works!
It seems like many of you would rather be able to enter deer under any weapon. How many others would like to see us change that?

I like the KISS. Any weapon, any season, every tag as long as they are legally taken. I took three other deer that I couldn't enter last year. I'd even donate my share of last years first place prize to get things started. Will you double it HH? ;)

i think it would be very cool... to be on a team with someone from Indiana or Ohio.
I definately like the KISS method. Any weapon/Any Season (legally)
Allow up to two does per hunter and 1 buck.
Same point structure, 5 points per deer, + antler points over 1".Thank you again for doing it last year guys...I had a great time.

I'll tell you now that; that probably won't happen. Having it just be 2 deer per person is hard enough to keep up with scoring and what not and if we were to do that it would create a royal mess.
Also, to explain a little background on why we did the gun/bow split format last year is that in the past the contest was bow hunters only so we wanted to make a balance between including everyone and what had been done in the past.
any MI location
Last years was. Did you get the impression that it wasn't?

Did you build an excel spreadsheet to do the scoring for you? That would make it painless!

I did for creating the teams, but since we don't have mod duties and the face that the site doesn't mix will with excel (to keep an updated score sheet for you guys) Kelly Johnson was gracious enough to do all the scoring for us, but we still did our best to double check it. Plus it seemed like 1 in 4 deer submitted had a problem w/ the submission so we had to handle those situations via pm so its not just a matter of checking a box when it comes to 'scoring'. Also, the primary benefit of 2 per hunter is that it keeps a level playing field for everybody-whether you hunt private or public, bow or gun, etc.

Yeah we talked last fall about letting people enter more deer when making the contest last year but the problem with that is the fact that not everyone can get doe tags so it wouldnt be fare to those in the UP and areas like that. Also like theredmission said we are not mods so every time a deer was entered the wrong way we had to pm the person then have Kelly fix any problems. And the more deer we allow the more work it is on the 3 of us!

1) One buck and one doe
2) Any weapon and any season
3) Deduct 5 points for anything smaller than a six point and less than 10 inch spread!

The only problem i had with the contest was the one gun hunter and the rest bow only. Like just about everyone else said, make it any weapon during its season.

I guess to explain the reasoning for that a little more was that a large majority of the participants are bow or combo hunter, but there is also a handful of members who only hunt with a gun. So in theory giving each team one gun member and the rest bow it gave every team the same time span which they could be hunting. Where as when it is just anything goes you could potentially end up with 3 gun hunters, which doesn't always matter in regards to success rate, but it could just mess with the balance of teams.
A lot of the more red tape-ish stuff that kept it from being super simple was to make sure that everyone that signed up would participate. So that way if we saw that an individual couldn't even take the time to read the directions on how sign up correctly then they most likely wouldn't participate in the contest discussion much and we could just take them out then.

I enjoyed the contest the way it was this last year. That was my first year entered and was very pleased. I was on a team that didn't post much but I like checking in with the team and also reading some of the other teams post.
But if you are looking to make changes how about:
2 Deer Limit (Bucks or Does)
Deer taken in December could be done with weapon of choice
Other states welcome but done under this site.

I think you should give anyone who will be 50 years of age in the calendar year of the contest a 10 point handicap so we can keep up with the young whippersnappers! :D

I missed out on last years contest....but look forward to the 08 contest. I like the idea of picking a weapon of choice before hand and sticking to it. Hey, it does add an element to the challenge. Either stick with your designated weapon....or give up the chance to enter the deer in the contest. That what choices are all about. Just my .o2 worth.

There's lot of different suggestions but it ultimately falls on the guys who run the contest. They are the ones who volunteer their time to come up with the rules, tally the points and update the board. What ever is decided make the rules so it's easy on the guys who administer the contest.
Speaking from a members view point we'll sign up if we agree with the contest rules or we won't sign up. I know some will sign up and never be heard from again but that was kind of addressed in last years contest rules.

Although I did not get in time last season, I participated the year before and had a good time. I do like the any weapon so long as its legal thing. Because the majority of us hunters probably bow, gun, and muzzload hunt. look forward to signing up this season.

I don't think this is too bad of an idea, BUT, I don't see anyone in MI coming out on top if we were to compete with other forums from WI, IN, or OH. On top of that, I could see some more animosity surface between some guys from other States...which is already visible if you read stuff on the IN forums and once in a while the OH forums. Not that they don't like us per se, but they really look down on the way Michigan's deer herd is managed, some of the bucks shot here, the "one buck rule forever" ideal, etc. I could just see a lot of problems arise, that's all.

How about a bonus point or two for each of your entered deer that are donated to Michigan Sportsmen Against Hunger? Maybe post a pic of your donation receipt as proof...
