This quite possibly may be a very dumb question. Does it matter if I fill a line counter reel all the way (mono)??? I want to say it will screw with the calibration or some crazy thing. Just seems stupid to strip off a full spool, then re-spool, and only use the 1st 100'. Am I missing something here:16suspect?

The line counter will never read correct. Most line counters the counter is linked to the spool. It measures by revolutions of the spool. If the spool is not full, the spool will go around faster and it will tell you that you have x amount out when usually you are not even close.
Example. My cousin was killing eyes on jet 20's 180 ft back.....really he was about 100 back, but he did not agree so I shut up.

:yeahthat: Fill the reel up to about 1/8 from the top and you should be good to go.

Yes, the amount of line on the reel affects the line counter reading. Also, some line counter reels are not accurate when you buy them.
I checked my line counters when I bought each of them them by filling it nearly full, stretching out a 100 ft tape measure in the yard and pulling out the line. If the counter didn't read at least 95, I took the reel back. If it read more than 105 I took line off the reel until it read between 100 and 105.
One of the reels I took back only read about 70 ft.
If you lose line off the reel during the season, it will affect the line counter reading.

You gotta fill that sucker up Matt. I have a trick for calibrating that model reel you bought so that it's dialed in. Give me a call and I'll explain it to you, it'll be easier on the phone than typing it.:)

I use the counter mainly as a reference point.
Fill it up. Then go outside and measure off 100ft. Let out 100 ft and see how it does.
A problem that many have is when they have 6-8 linecounters, some full and some not full...then they try to reproduce their spread...and wonder..."why am I not catching fish on this rod and I'm hammering them on that rod with the same bait the same distance back..."
Fill 'em up...eliminating variables definitely helps!

What are you refering to as DEEP water? My fall program consists on running shallow flats for hogs. I caught over 75 walleye in 7 ft or less of water last fall. Some days they like 100 back, some days 60. Linecounters are key to that program. All of my counter are calibrated and has the EXACT same amount of line on them so they all run the same.

I agree Andy. I've had to catch fish in the middle of the summer 5 feet down over 15 foot out in the middle of my backyard. Those LSC fish do suspend. That's one of the reasons why I had Matt buy the reels he bought on that day I met him at BPS to pick out his gear.;):D
