I have a 16 ft sylvan expedition boat with a 60hp 4 stroke mercury outboard on it. I love the motor but I wish the boat would plane out alot quicker. Does anyone know if I put the hydrofoil fins on the motor if it would help?

Yes it would likely help with planing but the design will also cost in efficency. Many use the foils and that seems to solve the problem. Another solution are these.

A little more expensive but in my experience worth every dollar.

I had a 30hp Evinrude on a 16ft and had trouble getting on plane.
switched to a 4 blade prop and a stingray jr. and had no problems getting on plane even at slow speeds.

Dont want to jack your thread, but do you (or anybody else) have these on your boat? Do they make a noticable difference? I've looked into getting some of the ProTroller to try to slow my boat down. I've got a Trolling Plate that I haven't put on yet. I just cant get myself to drill a couple holes into my new motor.

I've had them for a couple seasons now. The only reason I wanted them was to get my fat pig up on plane quicker. Best thing available! The price was right, installation a snap and no maintenance. If your looking for somthing to eaqualize your load or correct list on plane you'll need a different model but for it's intended purpose Its slick. I get more speed, use less fuel and the boat handles better.

You will notice a HUGE difference in time to plane and the speed at which you can stay on plane if you add one of the hydrofoils. I like the Stingray products or the Dolefins. I have a Dolefin on my 72 Glastron with a 50 Merc. It gets on plane in it's own length (14') and will stay on plane at 11 mph. Also, saying you lose efficiency is not always true... it's very hull and setup dependent. My Glastron is way more efficient with the foil on... it takes a lot less power to maintain a decent speed than it used to. No porpoising, on plane immediatly, and I think it may even be a touch faster on the top end.

I put a jr on my boat last year for the first couple of trips. I did help get on plane a little quicker. It robbed me over 5 mph on the top end and fuel mileage, so off it went

Skeeter... if you lost that many MPH your motor is probably set too low on the transom

Same here... I tried the Sting Ray... Damn thing skeered me to death once when I crossed a wake at an angle. Lost MPH, fuel economy and didn't like the way it made the boat handle either. I have it floating around somewhere...

Thats exactly what i was thinking maybe it was too high, so i took it back to the dealer. They said its right where it should be and if it was too high the prop would blow out at high speed. I ended up with a five blade prop with a little less of a pitch, now it jumps up for a four stroke
