I was just reading the thread about float rods and I noticed the different opinions on lengths. I am going to buy my first float rod this weekend. What length would you guys recommend for rivers like the PM or White. Any specific first rods would be cool too.

Thanks,
Mike

id say 13' is a great all around first rod to buy. it sucks because st. croix quit making their 13' avid. that was a perfect starter rod with a great amount of backbone for turning fish. it was power priced right too around 200 bucks. raven sells a rod called the matrix. its around 13' (12'9"to be exact) and its priced very well. lamiglas sells a couple 12' sticks that would be good all around rods. of course you have the higher end raven's and the gloomis's out there, and they are great rods but for starting out those are priced kinda rich for my blood. you know there also is okuma's guide select and sheffield series rods. they are both very reasonable for a first float rod. great rods to learn on. i started out on an okuma and really enjoyed the rod. have since found deals on raven IM9's both the 13'6" and the 15' that i just couldn't pass up on.

Doug,

Thanks for the great reply. I have been trying to get that info for weeks now. I am going to the Fly fishing show in detroit on Sat. after that Im going to go down to Flat Rock and check out what they have. If all goes well, I'll buy another pleasantry to help feed the Addiction!!!;)

Thanks,
Mike

I can personally vouch for the customs at the Little Dipper. The guy does great work.
On a side note,if you plan on getting a 12' Lamiglas Certified Pro,do so soon. They are discontinuing the 12' rods from their lineup this year.

Axis,

Thanks for the suggestion. Although, I am not getting a custom. I am going to get a factory rod first so I can learn what I like. When I I know I will have my rod built by Dom at infinity.

mc,

PLEASE DON'T DO THAT. DOM HAS BEEN KNOWN TO NOT WARRANTY HIS WORK. THE COST HE CHARGES FOR THE SOMETIMES SHOTTY WORK HE DOES DOES NOT WARRANT PUTTING ANY MONEY IN THAT GUY'S POCKET. I HAVE MANY FRIENDS THAT HAVE BEEN IN NO OTHERS TERMS "SCREWED" BY HIM. HIS WEBSITE IS LURING AND YES FANCY BUT IF A ROD OF HIS BREAKS ITS YOUR PROBLEM NOT HIS. JUST A HEADS UP. IF YOU NEED SOURCES OF CUSTOMER UN-SATISFACTORY FROM "INFINITY ROD CREATIONS" I CAN GIVE YOU MULTIPLE THAT WOULD TESTIFY TO HIS GAMES.

PM me if you have any questions,
