2 INCHES OF ICE MAX WITH LESS IN MANY AREAS.......WE HIT A THIN SPOT AND BUSTED THROUGH WITH A QUAD. THERE ARE PEOPLE FISHING OUT THERE AND SOME HAVE QUADS BUT IT IS DEFINATELY NOT SAFE AND YOU CAN FEEL THE ICE MOVING BENEATH YOU. THERE ARE PRESSURE CRACKS EVERYWHERE. PEOPLE HAVE FALLEN THROUGH SEVERAL TIMES ALREADY!!! Its like walking on a thin sheet of see-through glass.

I saw at least 25-30 people on the ice Saturday morning. All in about the same spot. They all seemed to make it out there alright. I wouldnt try it though. What was everyone fishing for anyways?

Whitefish and Lakers but that was the spot we went to where all the guys were grouped together. Those guys were nuts. It was one shot with the spud EVERYWHERE and you were through. If 2 guys stood next to each other, the ice started cracking. The other guys who had a quad out there broke through too on the way out.

Heard on the news today that the Sherrif's dept. found a 26 year old man dead in his shanty on East Bay. Police were notified by the family that the man failed to come home, thye didn't release any names yet so I don't know if I know the person or not, very sad.

Why would you fish when it's 50 degrees out?

We were out yesterday when it was 50 degrees and had the quad out on the ice, had about 9-11 inches of good ice. But the fishing sucked.

im just wondering if it was 2inches thick why did you have a quad out on it?:dizzy:

Fishing out there ain't the brightest thing to do now. concidering it has only been half froze for a week. Thinning the herd a tad I'm guessing

i was with fishslayer when we went out there. The reason we took the quad, well i wasn't dumb enough to ride it, but the reason we took it was becausewe saw some other guys out there with one so we thoiugh it may be safe. The quad did break through twice, once on the way in and once on teh way out but steve was driving it fast enough so it didn't go through. people have been starting to fish west bay though, not sure with this rain how its gonna be now, does anyone know?

Huh I remember it being about 20 degrees at the time we were out there. Not exactly sure where the 50 came from.....:dizzy:

Oh, and the ice was thick near shore but it definately changed fast when we hit the drop off and we didn't notice it right away until I looked down and saw straight to the bottom in 40 ft of water. Then I just about had a heart attack.

Come on! Two inches of ice is a lot for that area:)
I can remember as a kid growing up in Suttons Bay there were fishers that would fish off the old coal and oil docks with only one inch of ice. They claimed that the pressure of such a big body of water made the ice safe. I asked if this is true, why some of the fishers wore life jackets. I got no response to this question. I figured it would make it easier to find them under the ice when they did go through. Interestingly enough, you did not hear of anyone falling through. Over the years I have had fun with this story. I can say from experience that for some reason the ice on the bays does not make a cracking sound when you venture out on to thin of ice. It makes a groaning sound. If you hear it stop immediately and backtrack as fast as possible. I was on 1/2 inch of ice with open water a few feet in front of me. It was a sunny day and the reflection on the open hole looked just like the ice. Well that's my 2 cents. Be safe and good fishing.

I remember back in the very early 70s seeing guys using 4' X 4' square pieces of plywood to walk on. Step on one, slide the other and then back and forth, about 1 1/2 inches of ice when I walked out and then turned right back around. This was on the bay...........I can see the gene pool hasn't changed much since then.

Carl Olsen form Glenn Arbor use to pull his 12' fishing boat behind him. It saved his A** a couple of times. He was a true believer in fishing first ice and was always on the ice during break-up. I learned a lot about fishing from him. However, thin ice is not my thing.
