O.K. , I've seen a couple of bullheads caught thru the ice ,& heard of muskrats coming up thru a hole, but never heard of a bullhead surfacing in a hole.
we were fishing in a lake in cass county & we had several holes punched thru & doing some hole hopping. i went back to this one hole & there was a 13-14" bullhead coiled up in it. i watched him a second, then tapped him with my strainer & he slowly swam back down.
this was in 14-15 foot of water. any one ever seen anything like that?

I had it happen one time with a 12 incher. It came up through my hole in 3 foot of ice. Must have come up because of the light as I was fishing specks at night.

On white lake today I saw this for the first time in my life, this bull head about 12 inches came up to my hole looked at me and slowly swam away.
i think i heard once that they do this, in last ice because the oxygen is depleted.. i don't know if its true, but it sounds almost right..

Well, never had one surface in my hole, but we were set up for gills today, dropping my waxy down, then a bullhead swam 3 foot below the surface. I pulled up my bait, he ate it, then I caught him. Well, we only ended up with 4 gills between 3 of us, so not such a good day. Bullhead are pretty tasty from cold water on a clean lake, even though my buddies refuse to believe it.

if you were getting a lot of them into the holes then your lake might have an oxegen problem. but with it being a single fish or 2 it could be anything, such as the light or just needing a little oxegen or just coming up for a look see.
yes them bullheads are good. got 18 of them rascals this last weekend up on missaukee lake, at lake city. and they were 4 to 5ft. off bottom.
