Welp, been fishing my butt off this ice season with only 8 walleye and one jumbo perch to show for it. Been taking my 9 yr old boy with me the last few times and couldnt even get him a bump let alone a fish to take home.:sad:
Was catching 1 or 2 fish whenever I fished alone but had no luck when in the company of my little fishin buddy.
Today I took a drastic change for both him and myself and decided we would hit the deeper waters in the morning. I'm not a big fan of AM fishing but I was desperate! I just had to get him on some fish before he got fed up with this whole ice fishing thing.
(We fished together this year 3 times prior with no fish on his line and only one on mine which was lost before it hit the hole.)
We went out to 23 fow and set up by 7:30 am. The vex is lit up as soon as it hits the hole! 30 minutes later....fish on! I got a nice 21 incher. 10 min later he gets a hit! Little excited and lost it due to jerking the rod a bit hard. No biggee, get it back down there and BAM...another, but with the same results:sad:. Well, after a little lesson on how not to rush them to the hole, the boy caught on and was on a tear after that! He caught his first 7 fish through the ice (2 throw backs) and had a ball the whole morning. We got our 2-man limit and left by 1:00. Caught 18 total with 8 being throw backs. I did get a nice 8 lbr along with one around 5 lbs or so. The rest were good eaters for the both of us to brag about for years to come!:D
All in all an awesome day and another die-hard fisherman hooked for life now!!
