I bought a nice herring spear from Greg's machine shop at Barbeau south of the Soo a few years ago, also some great ice tongs. The spear has fine tines set in a lead shank. I don't know if they still make them or not but if your interested it my pay to call as it one of the nicest spears i've seen in a long time. There located on 15 Mile Rd. east of M-129 a few miles, sorry I don't have there number but if I come acroos it I'll put it in another post.

My father-in-law talks about how they speared on GT bay in the spring for whitefish from a boat. They would spear at night from a boat, that was equipped with under water lights that pointed forward. They would motor in the shallows (up to 20') with the spear thrower in the bow. The spear is about ten foot long with a wooden handle and rope attached, it was actually thrown at the fish as they moved along the bottom. He stated that they used to do really good. The boat they had was just a smallish V bottom (14') with a raised railing in the bow for the thrower to lean against with his torso, as he was on his knees on the bow seat. The thrower would direct the driver of the boat with his spear on which way to go. Always wanted to try it.

Could not spear thru the ice here-too thick. Have to cut hole first.
