I have the camera and wish I had the vex. Sometimes the visability stinks. More than either of these, I wish there were better reports that would drive me to get out there.

Come on Spring!

I've been debating this myself lately (don't have either). My thought is the Vex sees the whole water column... the camera only sees where you put it (hope you got it right).

I'm leaning towards a Vex or something like it (Showdown).

I've fished with both. I prefer my vex. Many times while fishing Saginaw Bay I will work walleyes up 5 ft. off the bottom. Camera won't do you much good then. Also there can be issues with the fish wrapping in the camera cord. With the vex it is easy to pop the transducer out of the hole with one hand while maintaining pressure on the fish. Plus the vex is a lot more portable. All I have to do is lift it up out of the hole and walk to the next on. I don't have to reel up 20 ft. of cord then drop it back in the hole, spin the camera to see the lures, etc... In other words I like my vex, and rairly will I fish with out it.

i could add my own experiences...you will learn a lot with the cam...you will fine tune your presentation...you will see the fish in action...after a couple seasons you will not need the cam any more...the cam will teach you that virtually every perch which swims under your hole will check out your baits...they will literally swim up and touch it with their tongue...if they dont hit it you need to change something...spike vs mousie vs waxie vs minnow vs wiggler...all i need is the vex to know that there are fish down there...the rest is up to the angler.

It really sounds like a vex is more practical for the above mentioned reasons. And yes, the camera is REALLY hard to use if you are fishing off bottom.
Oh, but it is soooo neat to watch the fish :chillin:
It's neat to see what triggers the bite when they just want to blow on the baits. When not to set the hook...sometime they only have the tip of bait in their mouth.
It's neat too, to be able to see what kind of fish are down there. When a school of gills come in, we switch over to waxies or spikes etc. to get em' .
The best is when you see the big hog come in and you play keep away with the dinks and put the bait right in front of the keepers. Gets my heart pumping everytime....
Yes, Percheater, it does seem like cheating :one_eye:
Here's a few pictures of our Aqua Vu, taken last week....

Meanwhile, would love to see a vex in operation!!! I have never had the opportunity to fish under one, but they sound pretty cool.
Best regards,
Laura

We use both the camera and an X67c. I need to put my Showdown up for sale if I could ever find my charger for it.

Both have thier good points. I like to see how the fish are reacting.

If I only had to chose one, it would be the fl-8, the camera is fun to watch on though.

They are really cool and I would not want to go out without one. It takes some practice to understand what all the lines and colors mean but one you get used to it, you will love it. The Vexlar is so sensitive that it can actually detect your bait even if you are using micro jigs and spikes. One of the members stated that you can not see the fish bite but that is not true. When you see a target move over to your bait and it disappears you had better set the hook even if your line does not move because the fish has the hook it its mouth and will spit it out within a second if you do not set the hook.

With my FL18 with the bottom zoom on I was able to tell when I lost a minnow from my jig on the bottom in 180 fow on Crystal lake last weekend.

Being able to zoom the bottom 6 foot is the catz nutz..........

Best money I have ever spent.
